“Opening of the Curtains”

Location: SFA
SD: 2.20418.1820
Scene: Halois’ office

Etallia Halois leaned back in her chair, holding a
PADD in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other. It
was in the middle of the afternoon and the
half-Betazoid was reviewing a proposal written by her
research assistant from the biocybernetics lab. **Very
impressive, ** the brunette thought, producing a tiny
smile. **Proposal will need a few corrections though.
** She placed her coffee cup on the desk and began
studying the contents of the PADD in careful detail,
so as to pinpoint the areas needing modifications.

Etallia’s work at the academy involved teaching a few
courses in the medical and the engineering departments
and conducting some research projects in the
aforementioned areas. She was also a senior instructor
of ACT, a program meant to train future leaders in
Starfleet. She was involved in running at most, one or
two classes in ACT per year, though that was likely to
increase after the recent overhaul of the training
regime. Besides work, the hybrid spent a great deal of
time with her seven year old daughter, Miranda and
twin, Katerina, also an instructor in the Academy.

Her thoughts were interrupted, when the door chime
rang. The Betazoid/Bajoran woman looked up, curiosity
etching her features regarding the visitor. “Enter,”
she commanded, watching the doors slid open to allow a
tall, lean humanoid woman with feline features enter
the room, followed by two seven year old boys,
clutching their mother’s long, golden brown tail.

Halois stood up and gestured towards the visitor’s
chair. “Commodore, please have a seat.” She gave a
warm smile at the two children as the DACT waved at
the senior instructor to sit back down before taking
the chair as offered. The boys let go of the tail and
began chasing each other around the room. Minurrva
Ranirre glanced behind and addressed her children in a
soft, purring voice. “Tavrus, S’irius, do not run
around Lt. Halois’ office. It’s not very nice.”
Returning her attention to the half-Bajoran, Minurrva
apologized. “I’m sorry. My boys are being a little too
hyperactive at the moment.”

Etallia chuckled. “That’s okay, Commodore. I have an
active seven year old myself.”

“Speaking of which.” Ranirre inquired, radiating a
sense of warmth in her voice. “How is sweet Miranda
doing? Tavrus and S’irius miss playing with her.”

Pulling behind a lock of hair, the senior ACTi
replied. “Miranda is doing well and she misses playing
with your sons as well.”

“Perhaps, you can have her stop by my home,” the
Caitian woman suggested, caressing her soft, brown
mane.

Etallia politely inquired, realizing the Director did
not stop by her office for a social visit. “So
Commodore, to what do I owe you the pleasure of your
visit?”

Minurrva gave out a soft chuckle as she presented a
PADD to the shorter woman. “Well, it so happens you
have been assigned to teach a class of two cadets,
both Engineering majors,” the feline informed.

“Hmm…” Etallia mused as she quickly glanced through
the details of Cadets Cochrane Stephens’ and Eugenie
LaGrande’s records. “This looks like an interesting
pair.”

“They all are,” the Caitian remarked, grinning. “Lt.
Sevlock will be your junior for this class. I believe
the two of you have worked with each other before.”

Etallia nodded, remembering the Vulcan hybrid
instructor. “Indeed we have.”

Time Index: Following morning

Sevlock informed as he walked alongside his superior.
“I just received confirmation from the superintendent
that both cadets have already arrived at the
holodeck.”

“Good,” Etallia nodded, smiling with satisfaction. She
enjoyed walking through the memorial gardens in the
morning. The hybrid took in the freshness of the
smells originating from the various kinds of flora,
arranged neatly in their respective bushes and flower
beds. A cool breeze blew across her face, swaying
strands of brown hair. “Please inform the
superintendent to replicate two EVA suits for our
students.”

The Vulcan/Human hybrid raised his eyebrow and
questioned. “Lieutenant Halois, does this scenario
involve EVA?”

“You’ll know in a few minutes, Sevlock,” Etallia
answered, smiling, her deep blue eyes showing a sea of
calmness. Moments of silence passed as the unassuming
gray-toned rectangular form of the ACT building
appeared in front of the duo. Etallia asked, inclining
her head. “So what are your impressions on the two
students?”

Sevlock pondered for a moment, before responding.
“Very impressive. Cadet Eugenie LaGrande seems to be a
well-rounded student in terms of skills and knowledge,
with a major in Engineering, a minor in Security and
additional training in first aid and piloting.” The
half-Vulcan paused for a moment as the instructors
walked up the steps before adding. “That could come
very handy for her in the fleet.”

The senior instructor nodded in agreement with her
colleague as the doors parted to let them enter the
building. “And Cadet Stephens?”

“Well,” the Vulcan began. “From what I read of his
records, Cadet Stephens seem to be a very driven
individual and has ambitions to command a starship.”

Etallia grinned, commenting. “I think anyone applying
for this program has the same ambition.”

“True,” Sevlock agreed, maintaining the Vulcan-like
stoic expression. “His education places a heavy focus
on Engineering, having specialized in computer systems
and theoretical propulsion.”

The half-Bajoran added, walking down the corridor
leading to the holodecks. "Maybe he likes tinkering
with stuff or is a meticulous planner.”

“Possibly.” The junior instructor nodded.

Halois concluded as they turned around a corner. “Well
we shall soon find out if our impressions are
correct.”

----------------------------
Scene: Holodeck

Cadets LaGrande and Stephens were already waiting in
the room surrounded by black walls with yellow
gridlines and suited up in EVA gear. Etallia noted
them with interest, wondering if they were excited,
nervous or just curious about their training. Both ACT
instructors had put on their suits just before
arriving at the holodeck.

The half-Betazoid slowly took a few steps towards her
class and cleared her throat before addressing them.
“I am sure you are wondering why you were asked to
wear EVA suits for your training.” She paused for a
second, waiting for any responses to her comment,
before inquiring. “Have you studied your ACT
packages?”

“Yes ma’am,” the cadets replied in unison. Their
senior instructor produced a smile filled with
satisfaction.

“Good.” Etallia nodded. Phase 1 of Advanced Command
Training tested the candidates’ basic skills, gained
in the Academy and command abilities in a controlled
environment and required them to participate in a
scenario, befitting their educational background. If
the cadet has successfully passed the first phase, he
or she would move on to the second one, which took
place in the fleet, where the situation was real. The
brown haired woman stepped to the center of the room
and commanded. “Computer, load program Eng-Alpha 2.”

[[Program loaded,]] the monotone voice of the computer
replied.

In a few seconds, the holodeck morphed into the
Engineering section of a ship. The area was dark and
empty. The four participants switched on their helmet
lights, which provided a better view of the
surroundings. Etallia watched LaGrande kick a piece of
shrapnel away. The object just slowly floated away,
which gave the indication that there was no air and
the gravity controls were not functioning at the
moment. Both cadets had their tricorders pulled out
from their suit pockets and held forward to do a quick
scan of the place. The Betazoid/Bajoran hybrid was
pleased. **They’re well-prepared. That’s good. ** She
ordered. “Status report.”

Cochrane was the first to reply, his hazel eyes fixed
intently on the readings generated on the small
handheld device. “No life signs, besides our own, can
be detected.” The tall man could feel gentle movement
as the ship simply floated in space. “Apparently, this
vessel has been abandoned.”

“That is a very good assessment,” Sevlock commented,
his face a mask void of any emotion. The Vulcan hybrid
rubbed the hard walls with his gloved hand and
questioned. “Anything else to report?”

This time, it was Ginny LaGrande who answered,
glancing briefly away from the tricorder. “All systems
are off-line. Hardly anything here is working, sir.”

“Well then,” Etallia declared, hopping a step forward
towards a console, which was off-line. “Your
assignment for this level is to make the necessary
repairs in Engineering to get this ship up and
running.”

Sevlock added, floating to Stephens’ side. “Our first
priority is getting life-support online and the
lights.” The cadets nodded in agreement, knowing once
there was breathable air in the ship, they would be
able to remove those annoying, bulky EVA suits off
their bodies.

Halois informed, leaning back against the walls. “Lt.
Sevlock and I will be observing your performance
closely.” She sighed inwardly, hoping to get out of
the suit herself and asked. “Any questions?” No
response from the cadets, whom she knew were eager to
jump into their tasks. She concluded with a smile,
which was unseen due to fog forming all over the glass
separating her face from the environment. “Okay,
everyone. Let’s get to work.” At her command, Ginny
and Cochrane took control of two consoles each and
began making their repairs.

************************************************************************

NRPG: Phase 1 has begun! :D You’ll notice in the
beginning I have not placed a contd from since this is
the first post of the class. Hope my handling of your
characters are okay.

Here is a brief description of the situation:
Our characters are now in an abandoned vessel (of
course a simulated version in a holodeck ;) ),
floating aimlessly in space. The ship can be
Starfleet, civilian or alien etc (up to you). Your
task for the first level is for your characters to
make repairs in Engineering and get this ship
functional without incident.

A note to the person who posts first, please make sure
to not get everything repaired and leave something for
your classmate, so they will have enough material to
write ;) I am pretty sure, the repairs are so
extensive that you both will have lots on your
characters’ plates <lol>

A few important notes here in Phase 1:

1)	Each of you post only once per level. After the
second player has posted, Rahul or I will post the 2nd
level, which will be a bit more challenging ;)
Remember the higher the level, the tougher it gets :)
2)	Posts should be no less than 500 words. If you are
a couple of words short, maybe write a description of
how certain system or consoles look like or maybe some
chit chat with your classmate or the instructors. You
can also write other stuff like your characters’
impressions on their training or anything in general.
3)	In this phase, you are evaluated on four basic
areas: Rules of formatting (Refer Book 2: Protocol),
Spelling/Grammar, Post Readability (Make sure your
posts are easy to read and understand, i.e leave
spaces in between paragraphs, place a divider between
scenes) and Post Length (Minimum word limit: 500)
4)	Phase 1’s main purpose is basically getting
yourself adjusted or in both your cases, readjusted to
writing in the game environment. The primary focus in
this phase will be on how you structure your posts.
5)	You will have 1 week to get your level 1 posts out.
If real-life issues prevent you from making that
deadline, then please let us know and we’ll try to
accommodate you.
6)	The most important rule here is for you to just
relax and have fun :)

Finally, if you have questions or comments, feel free
to drop Rahul and myself a note and we’re more than
happy to assist :)
