“Phase 1”
Location: SFA
SD: 2.70613.2137
Scene: Halois’ office
Etallia Halois leaned back in her chair, holding a
PADD in one hand and a glass of lemonade in the other.
It was the twilight hours of the day and the
half-Betazoid was reviewing a report written by her
research assistant from the biocybernetics lab.
**Excellent as usual, ** the brunette thought,
producing a tiny smile. **Report will need a few
corrections though. ** She placed her glass on the
desk and began studying the contents of the PADD in
careful detail, so as to pinpoint the areas needing
modifications.
Etallia’s work at the academy involved teaching a few
courses in the medical and the engineering departments
and conducting some research projects in the
aforementioned areas. She was also a senior instructor
of ACT, a program meant to train future leaders in
Starfleet. She was involved in running at most, three
to four classes in ACT per year. Besides work, the
hybrid spent a great deal of time with her seven year
old daughter, Miranda and twin, Katerina, also an
instructor in the Academy.
Her thoughts were interrupted, when the door chime
rang. The Betazoid/Bajoran woman looked up, curiosity
etching her features regarding the visitor. “Enter,”
she commanded, watching the doors slid open to allow
the slim figure of a Deltan male walk into the room.
Halois gestured towards the visitor’s chair. “Please
have a seat, Seloron.” After the junior ACTi sat down,
the half-Betazoid began with a tiny smile. “Thanks for
meeting me,” before posing the question. “So what do
you think of our latest cadet?” The cadet, the hybrid
was referring to, was Jacob Crichton, whose education
was heavily in Engineering...well his entire life was
mainly focused around said area.
The other instructor straightened his shoulders before
answering. “According to his Academy records, he is
quite an exception individual in his chosen field, but
I have noticed he was a discipline issue with the
instructors in his earlier years.”
“Well, Cadet Crichton did manage to clean up his act
part way through the second year,” Etallia pointed
out. “And he managed to do well in later years, which
earned him a spot in the ACT program.” She glanced
back at a PADD containing Crichton’s information and
pondered for a moment, before directing her attention
to another PADD, which listed the various scenarios.
Seloron slowly asked, curious over what the senior
instructor was doing. “What kind of scenario do you
have in mind, Etallia?”
The Betazoid/Bajoran instructor mused, grinning. “It
has to be something challenging for him. He is after
all very strong in his Engineering skills and had a
history of challenging his instructors’ methods.”
“I agree.” The Deltan nodded and asked. “When do you
want to start his training?”
“In two days, we will take him to the holodeck,”
Halois replied, pulling behind a strand of brown hair.
Putting the PADDs aside, the thirty five year old
woman explained her plan. “But first I have an
important task for him.” She began entering some
information on her console.
Seloron raised his eyebrow and inquired. “What do you
have in mind?”
“Just a minute,” Etallia stated, her blue eyes glued
on the screen as she was still entering something.
“This message should be waiting for him in his dorm
room terminal immediately after arrival.”
“When is he expected to arrive?” The junior instructor
asked.
Halois replied. “Tomorrow morning.” She took in a
small breath, thinking of Crichton’s upcoming
training. Phase 1 of Advanced Command Training tested
the candidates’ basic skills, gained in the Academy
and command abilities in a controlled environment and
required them to participate in a scenario, befitting
their educational background. If the cadet had
successfully passed the first phase, then he or she
would move on to the second one, which took place in
the fleet.
She read the message out loud. “Cadet Jacob Crichton,
ACT candidate, class 0706. This message lays out
details of the first task in your training. Situation:
An unknown ship, abandoned for many years, is
encountered floating aimlessly in space. You’re placed
in charge of the Engineering team that is sent down
there. Upon your arrival, you find that nothing is
operational, not even life support.” She paused for a
moment to clear her throat.
The half-Betazoid resumed. “Your task, Cadet Crichton
is to assess the situation and prioritize the repairs.
You decide as to which areas need fixing immediately
and which don’t. Upon completion of the task, you
present your answer in the format of your choosing to
both me and Lt. Seloron. Your training commences
immediately after you’ve finished reading this message
and you have only three hours to complete this
assignment.” She sighed before closing out. “Good
luck, Cadet.”
“Seems a little too easy,” the Deltan mused.
Etallia grinned as she commented. “Well the first task
is always the simplest…sort of a warm up before the
challenge.”
************************************************************************
NRPG: Phase 1 has begun :) You’ll notice in the
beginning I have not placed a contd from since this is
the first post of the class.
Your task for your first post is as given in the
message, Etallia read out to Seloron. How you go about
writing the post is up to you. For example, you can
start with Jacob arriving at his dorm and finding this
message. Feel free to make use of the places in the
Academy (refer to ACT Book 4 for information), even
the holodecks if you like for maybe presenting your
solution and so on. Maybe even write about Jacob’s
impressions on his training, his expectations etc.
Don’t worry if the answer to the task is right or
wrong. This first post is basically to get your feet
wet and allowing you to get use to the rules of
formatting and post structure.
A few important notes here in Phase 1:
1) You only post once per level. After you have
posted, Erik or I will post the next level, which will
be more challenging ;)
2) Posts should be no less than 500 words.
3) In this phase, you are evaluated on four basic
areas: Rules of formatting (Refer Book 2: Protocol),
Spelling/Grammar, Post Readability (Make sure your
posts are easy to read and understand, i.e leave
spaces in between paragraphs, place a divider between
scenes) and Post Length (Minimum word limit: 500)
4) Phase 1’s main purpose is basically to get you
adjusted to writing in the game environment. The
primary focus in this phase will be on how you
structure your posts.
5) You will have 1 week to get your first post out. If
real-life issues prevent you from making that
deadline, then please let us know and we’ll try to
accommodate you.
6) The most important rule here is for you to just
relax and have fun :)
Finally, if you have questions or comments, feel free
to drop Erik and myself a note and we’re more than
happy to assist :)
