“Birthday Bash” (Cont’d from “it runs in the family… sort of”) Location: GATEWAY OUTPOST Scene: Security department Stardate: 2.70105.0918 TI: 4th January am Kat Gorman came home, it had been over two years since she’d last been a security officer, but entering the security hub of the large station always felt something like a home coming to her. Especially when the form of Xav’ion Budega-Jornam stepped out of the sea of grey with a smile on his face. “Kat, this is an unexpected surprise.” She smiled back and hugged the taller hybrid, “how are things?” “well I got rid of the two oldest kids.” He did a happy dance. “Only a few years before the little ones can move out.” Kat chuckled, “at least ten.” She pointed out, “so where are they?” “they’ve got jobs and are sharing quarters on the civilian module.” He answered and then nodded in the direction of the brig. “the chief is through there if you want him.” Kat nodded. “yeah thank you.” She headed towards the larger man and stood next to him. “Have you released the Bolian yet?” Hannibal shook his head, “got a slight problem on some grounds, all he’s done is stolen someones identity, but the Bolians want him because of that, Starfleet want him because he might know something about the real Rixx.” Hannibal concluded with a shrug. “I’ve spoken to Xana but it’s not really something she should get involved with.” “True.” Kat answered, “alright release him to Bolian officials, this is a Bolian committing another crime against a Bolian the pleasure cruiser we’ll release to command.” “The captain won’t like that.” Hannibal answered. “Well then tell him he can go with it.” “What if he does know something about Rixx?” Hannibal asked. Kat sighed and stretched her back, “I don’t even know what he’s done.” She muttered and then shook her head, “if he did know something about Rixx then I’d assume you would have found out already.” Hannibal smiled slightly and nodded, “I’ll release him to the next Bolian who comes around that corner.” “Hi.” Xana picked her way around the corner carefully, “the computer said you’d be here.” “Not her.” Kat told her chief of security sternly, the large man shrugged and gave her a lazy smile. “You sure? That would be entertaining.” Kat shook her head and turned to Xana, “hi Bols, what can I do for you?” The ambassador for EARTH in the gamma quadrant smiled and hooked her arm around the smaller commanding officers arm, “it’s more about what I can do for you.” Xana answered grinning at the groan that escaped her friends lips, they headed out of the security centre and down a corridor walking slowly. “How do you feel like a bit of a road trip?” Xana suggested, “well space trip I guess. You’ll get off the station, change of pace…” Kat looked at her friend, “what’s going on?” Xana laughed, “well you never know I might have been inviting you on holiday. The Tellessian government has invited EARTH’s ambassador to sample the delights of their pleasant planet.” She scowled slightly, “they’re a protectorate and I think they want member status so they’re trying to bond with EARTH.” Kat smiled, “by inviting you?” “Precisely, they want me to go next week, and they have suggested they’d be more than happy for a Starfleet contingent to go with me.” “So why didn’t you get Harper to assign you a ship?” Kat asked already knowing the answer but testing her friend slightly. “because considering it’s just a case of going and being nice to the locals and possibly deciding if they’re up to becoming members it’s going to be a nice easy time, I thought maybe we could take the families plus it will be nice and stress free for you.” Xana added pointedly. Kat sighed, “firstly I can’t take the kids no way can the starblazer hold the families of all the senior staff, and secondly there is no such thing as stress free in this job.” Xana grinned and nodded, “I guess you’re right, they have lots of beaches.” Realising she had probably just put Kat off she added, “some nice forests, apparently they have some of the largest tree’s in the gamma quadrant.” Kat laughed, “OK now you’re making things up to try and get me to go, I’ll speak to Harper.” She offered “but so long as he agrees to help keep an eye on things here I’ll be happy for the STARBLAZER to be your escort.” Xana smiled, “thanks, we’ll be able to find room for Eilean and Tomas right?” Kat answered with a nod as she came to the turbolift and then added, “we can even squeeze Dahlia in if you and Gene are still OK to babysit tonight?” Xana grinned, “not a problem.” She answered. =[/\]= Scene: Holodeck 2 TI: later that night Kat and Jeff sat side by side on cold plastic seats Kat had a blanket draped over her legs that was soon on the floor as the game began to play itself out in front of them. With only a brief grasp of the basic rules of hockey the CO of the GATEWAY was still enjoying herself. She’d discovered if she yelled smack him the holographic simulation of a crowd looked impressed at her. During a break of play Jeff leaned over, “admit it, you’re enjoying yourself.” Kat smiled a little bit and shrugged, “who are we supporting again?” He groaned and rolled his eyes. “the ones in black” “you sure?” Kat teased and pointed at someone coming round with burgers, “do you want one?” She offered Jeff grinned and called to the man carrying the tray who promptly threw two in Jeff’s direction the doctor caught them deftly and handed one to his wife. “although they’re not the nicest burgers in the world.” Kat laughed, “I’ve been to rugby matches they can’t be much worse.” Jeff grinned and settled down as play started again the two where up and cheering again shortly after as Edmonton scored again. =[/\]= TI: after the game Kat and Jeff where walking along a road holding hands Kat’s spare hand was covered with a big foam hand, one finger pointing and she was singing a rugby chant she’d managed to convert for the occasion. Jeff laughed after a poor attempt, “seriously what’s wrong with our chants?” he asked her quickly stopping her before she made attempt to fit Edmonton ice hockey team in place of Wigan RLFC. She stopped her mouth open and shrugged, “anyway we’re here.” Jeff paused part way around a road he was familiar with and looked at an Italian restaurant called Piccalino’s. “This never used to be here.” He declared “Call it artistic license.” Kat answered with a laugh and tugged him inside. A Maitre’d approached them looked haughtily at their hockey spectator clothes and asked, “Do you have a table booked?” Kat grinned and for the sheer pleasure of the look on his face answered in her best scouse accent “yeah, for two name’s Gorman.” He looked down at the list of names and tables and sighed. “right this way madam.” She followed with Jeff chuckling behind her, the waiter held out her chair and then handed them a menu each and a wine menu to Jeff then left them to make their decision, Jeff looked around, “very authentic,” he half teased. “Nicest pasta in the north west of England.” Kat answered easily. “and yes I know this is a hologram and so replicated food but that’s not the point.” Jeff raised his hands in surrender. “it’s brilliant kitten,” he offered her. She scowled at him when the waiter returned she ordered a pasta dish and a bottle of white wine, Jeff ordered something that looked good and they waited till the waiter was out of earshot. “you shouldn’t be drinking.” Her husband started and then rolled his eyes at the look on her face, “OK one,” Kat laughed, “Jeff it’s synthahol hon, it’s not going to hurt,” He scowled slightly but then nodded, “so when do we get our first scan?” he asked excitement starting to show as he turned to the subject of their unborn child, “and when do you go for your next checkup.” Kat burst out laughing and shook her head, “Jeff you’re the doctor.” She pointed out, “we might be leaving the station in a couple of days so I’ll go before then.” Jeff nodded at this. “alright but make sure I’m off duty so I can come with you.” “Well if you’re on duty you’ll be there anyway.” Kat pointed out happily as the waiter came back with the wine, they accepted it without tasting it which seemed to annoy the him even more. Jeff smiled slightly as he poured them both a glass, “I have to say we’re highly uncultured.” Kat grinned, “well unless you suddenly want to become a wine connoisseur I’m more than happy with being uncultured, I’m just glad you’re finally drinking something other than coke.” Jeff nodded his head, “and you’re drinking something other than whiskey.” He retorted. Kat answered with a laugh and then picked her glass up, “anyway a toast.” “what to?” “well to you.” She answered and smiled, “happy birthday poppet.” “What no present?” Jeff asked managing to pull a face and look upset. “Of course, just as soon as we get to the hotel.” Jeff raised an eyebrow, “hotel?” he asked. “Sure, tonight we’re childless and have a holodeck to ourselves, so I guess we can do anything camping, a night under the stars.” Jeff grinned, “the hotel idea sounds good to me,” he answered as the food arrived. ** NRPG: Bah this has taken me ages to write.
