========= “Pre-Party” Con’t from Chance’s “I, Murderer” ========= Location: GS-2 Stardate: 2422 [2.7] 0425.0549 Scene: Gorman Quarters <Note: This pretty much continues directly from my last post> “Have you ever considered trying for your own command?” Margaret asked her son once they got a few moments alone. The two men had briefly left the quarters to get the kids and in their absence mother and son were completely alone. Jeff grinned, before covering his mouth in an unsuccessful attempt to stifle a yawn. “Don’t you ever get tired of asking that question?” he asked. “Never,” Margaret replied with a similar looking grin. “A mother’s always supposed to be bugging her son about doing well and advancing himself in life.” “Maybe I’m advancing myself in other ways,” Jeff replied. “Ya ever think of that?” “I have,” Margaret retorted. “And don’t change the subject.” Jeff chuckled. “It’s never been a priority with me,” he said. “You know that.” “Actually, it used to be your biggest aspiration,” Margaret reminded him. “Remember the goals you set for yourself in your Starfleet graduating class yearbook? The first one was to become a Chief Medical Officer and the second one was to gain command of a medical ship. You’ve done the first, so what about the second?” Jeff shrugged. “I guess it’s not as much of a priority as it used to be,” he said. “Things change; people change.” “Have you changed?” Margaret asked her son. “Quite a bit I think,” Jeff replied honestly. “I think I’m very different from the boy that wrote those things down for the benefit of the people buying the yearbook.” “I just think that you could easily get a lot of command offers if you wanted to,” Margaret said with a shrug. “Who says I haven’t?” Margaret eyed her son curiously. “Have you?” she asked. Jeff returned the look silently for a few beats before grinning rather sheepishly. “No I haven’t,” he answered with a laugh. “Are you worried about splitting up the family?” Margaret asked. “Because it was never a problem with your father and I.” “That was different, like you pointed out,” Jeff said. “You two were both very committed to your careers and your only child was a hockey freak that spent most of his time down by the rink with his grandfather and completely out of your hair. I’ve got three children with a fourth on the way. GATEWAY is a secure place to raise a family; I don’t want my children to have to grow up constantly going back and forth between different starships.” Before Margaret could say anything else the doors opened and Geoff and Jamie entered with the three Gorman youngsters in tow. “Daddy!” El’Hron screamed, before running across the room and jumping into her father’s arms. Jeff laughed, hugging her close. “Happy birthday Princess,” he said. She glared at him and he rolled his eyes. “Okay, happy birthday Ko-Elki,” he looked over at the other adults. “One of these days I am going to get my revenge on Ronnie for teaching her that word.” Margaret chuckled. “Once Kat gets here we can get things started,” she said, glancing at the wall chronometer. “When does her shift end?” Jeff looked up. “Soon,” he promised. ========== NRPG: Not too shabby for 6 in the morning on no sleep in between studying for exams eh?
