“Post Party Remembrances”

Con’t from Joy’s “Four Years Ago”

=========

Location: GS-2

Stardate: 2422 [2.7] 0426.0308

Scene: Restaurant -> Promenade -> Lift -> Corridor -> Gorman Quarters

“So how do you feel?” Jeff asked his wife as the party had moved to a family
themed restaurant on the GATEWAY’s promenade. The kids were all around
El’Hron still and she was enjoying her birthday immensely. Neither parent
particularly minded however; they knew that later on in the evening or even
the next day they would get to spend some private time together as a family.
Right now all that mattered was that their little girl was having loads of
fun.

“What do you mean?” Kat asked, eyeing him in between bites of her meal. The
restaurant they were at served a lot of different meals and everyone at the
party had been able to find something that they enjoyed.

“I mean how do you feel?” Jeff repeated the question, looking at her
pointedly. Kat took his meaning and looked around them to make sure none of
the crew was in earshot. Luckily the adults around them were all civilians
so she leaned forward and lowered her voice slightly.

“I still don’t know,” she admitted. “Like I said, I wish I knew more.”

Jeff nodded his head. “I know that this might sound lame,” he said. “But
for what it’s worth I thought you did a great job.”

Kat smiled. “Thanks,” she said, before giggling slightly. “But you’re
right, it does sound lame.”

Jeff laughed and tucked in to his extremely greasy meal. The couple didn’t
get much change to exchange anymore words with each other over the dinner as
old friends and people leaving the party with their children took up most of
their attention. An hour and a half later they would up outside the
promenade with their two younger twin children as their now four year old
daughter ran up to them; still full of energy.

“Johnny’s parents want to take me ice skating as their present,” she said
excitedly. “Can I go? Can I?!”

Kat and Jeff exchanged a look. “Aren’t you tired Princess?” Kat finally
asked.

“No,” Ely declared. Kat and Jeff exchanged another look before both
simultaneously sighing.

“Just make sure they have you back home in two hours okay?” Jeff asked.

“Okay!” Ely cried out in delight, before giving both of her parents hugs and
then running after a group of children and adults that had been waiting for
her. Jeff and Kat watched her go before turning around and walking down the
promenade, each with a twin in tow. The twins had fallen asleep soon after
eating their dinner and each parent was carrying one in their arms. Jeff
had wanted to carry both because of Kat’s pregnant state but she had
silenced his protests with a look, hence the situation they were currently
in.

The promenade had grown very quiet and was in stark contrast to the bustling
state it was in when the group dinner had started. Now as husband and wife
walked across it with their two children they noticed that they were almost
alone.

“Do you remember when Ely was born?” Kat asked suddenly. Jeff shot her a
look, wondering what had caused her to ask such a random question, before
shifting his gaze back ahead of him and nodding his head.

“I do,” he said. “It was right after the Asazi relief mission, or rather it
was towards the end of it.”

**That was the mission we were linked on,** Kat commented, mentally
reminding her husband of the telepathic link that had been foisted onto them
at the time. Back before they were married, back before they even were
dating; back when they were two people that didn’t know each other very well
and considered the link to be a nuisance. It had grown on them over time as
their relationship had grown.

**Yeah,** Jeff answered silently, his mind drifting back to that particular
memory. Their friendship had been born out of fate, it seemed and had
broadened to a mutual trust that had eventually blossomed into the love they
now shared.

“I remember I was Ely’s Godfather before I even adopted her,” he said,
tossing the random memory out there for what it was worth.

“You were the only one left that wasn’t an honorary uncle or a family
member.”

“Gee, thanks,” Jeff replied with a slight laugh. Kat smiled over at him,
before reaching out and patting his arm reassuringly.

“I trusted you with her even before I fell in love with you,” she said.
Jeff returned the smile as the two neared the end of the top level of the
promenade. They stared out over the nearly empty scene of the promenade and
both silently marveled at the lack of activity. The GATEWAY being the
gigantic floating city that it was, the promenade area usually had some
major activity on it. Whether it was still due to the recovery from the
bombings or something else neither cared to comment, but both definitely
found the subdued level of activity soothing on their nerves.

“Do you ever wonder what might have happened if I hadn’t been as stupid as I
was?” Jeff asked suddenly as the two of them began their walk towards the
end of the promenade and the waiting turbolift.

“You probably would have your own command too,” Kat answered with a sidelong
glance at him. “And we would be celebrating our third anniversary instead
of our first.”

They entered the turbolift in silence, before Kat chose to continue that
line of thought. “You never did tell me what you did while you were gone,”
she said, not quite accusingly.

“A little bit of everything,” Jeff replied with a sigh. “I was completely
lost mentally and I didn’t really know what I was doing. It was a very
weird couple of months.”

“For you and me both,” Kat said with a sigh. “Who knows, we might both
still be on the PROPHECY right now in our old positions. You would have
been there for the twins’ birth, their naming and everything else you
missed.”

“Yeah,” Jeff said, as he hugged Leah a bit closer to his shoulder. They
rode down the lift to the level of their quarters in silence and in silence
they walked down the corridor to their quarters. It wasn’t until after they
had put the twins to bed and retired to the couch that either one of them
spoke again.

**It doesn’t matter now anyway,** Kat said silently, reaching up and gently
caressing her husband’s face. **You’re here now and that’s what matters.**
She smiled, leaning up and kissing his cheek. **And we’re going to welcome
another member into our growing family.**

Jeff smiled down at her as Kat’s hand went to her growing stomach and his
hand covered hers, the other one being draped around her shoulders and
drawing her to him. They stayed like that for a few moments before the door
chime drew their attention. It turned out to be Johnny’s parents with a
sleeping Ely in tow.

“I knew she was tired,” Jeff muttered to himself, Kat wearing a knowing
smile as he thanked the parents and took his daughter from them. As
carefully as possible he carried her into her room, laying her down to bed
and tucking her in before coming back out and rejoining his wife on the
couch.

“Those were fun times,” Kat commented, still in a reminiscing mood. “No
responsibilities, no cares…” her eyes twinkled slightly. “And gigantic
turkeys that thought you were one of their brood.”

Jeff laughed. He’d found the memory of that particular mission very
annoying for awhile, but now found it more amusing than anything else.
“Those were fun times,” he said, taking her hands in his. “But I think
these times are pretty fun too.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, absolutely. I’m married to a beautiful woman with three wonderful
children and a fourth on the way,” he said, smiling at her. “In a good job
as part of an organization I grew up with and believe in. And the fact that
this is all happening with you…yeah, I think that’s pretty amazing.”

Kat’s face lit up in a smile as the two shared a lengthy and wordless hug.

**Come on,** Kat said, pulling back with a slight yawn. **I don’t know
about you, but I’m beat. I think falling asleep in front of the new CO
would be a bad first impression.**

Jeff laughed, getting up off the couch and helping his wife up. “The kids
are asleep, nobody died and Ely got lots of presents. I think we can safely
call today successful,” he said.

“Definitely,” Kat agreed.

NRPG: Whew, this post got away from me a bit in terms of length, but I
enjoyed this little bit of selfishness.

In any case, my next post will detail a new shop on the promenade in the
spirit of Jerome’s little contest there.
