“Maternity”
(Cont’d from “Scene of the crime“)

Location: GS-2
Scene: Ops module
Stardate: 2.71605.1234

{{Ops}} Nick Cannons voice crackled over the comm.
Link, Kat slammed her hand opening the link before the
operations officer next to her could respond, “What is
it Nick?” she asked feeling the new Captains eyes on
her and disapproval emanating from him, she wasn’t
sure if it was over the impropriety of not letting the
ops officer do his job or the use of first name with
the FCO.

{{The wormhole spewed out some kind of orb, thing,
we’re tractoring it back to the station now, ETA five
minutes.}}

Kat and Mike shared a look as Kat replied, “Ta for
letting us know,” and closed the link.

Mike suddenly nodded, “I’ll go and talk to the
Bajorans someone would have seen that and mayhem will
be starting.”

Kat nodded, “I’ll contact Deep Space 9 and come up
with a contingency plan.” She answered already
stepping away from the ops console and towards a spare
console which she settled in front of as Captain Kane
disappeared.

Scene: Bajoran temple
TI: Running concurrently with the above

A young man in civilian clothes ran through the
doorway into the Bajoran temple, his earring jingled
as he came to a halt in front of Vedek Dawan and he
paused panting for breath.

The old man waited patiently and simply raised an
eyebrow at the youth waiting for him to regain his
breath as he leaned over onto his knees. “Well?” the
question finally broke the silence that had descended
on the room.

“It’s the wormhole… the prophets…” he didn’t get much
further as Captain Kane stepped into the room, as
panic began in one group of people and quickly spread
as stories of the light and an object being brought
back to the station spread like wild fire through the
group of people still here and celebrating the Bajoran
festival here in the temple.

Kane took this in and sighed making his way straight
to Vedek Dawan “Vedek, we need to talk.”

Vedek nodded and pulled him to one side one eye on his
flock as they moved about in distress.

“The wormhole is fine and we may be tractoring a new
orb to the station, it will be here soon and we will
need to make sure that is what the device is, you will
of course be welcome to come to the cargo bay to
oversee and scans so you can also be sure what the
device is.” Kane offered trying not to say they had
already guessed it was probably a new orb.

Vedek was quiet for a heart beat and then suddenly he
nodded, “I will calm these people and then meet you
there.”

Michael Kane nodded and quickly told the Bajoran
religious leader where to meet him as he left and
headed out of the temple.

Scene: CO’s ready room

Katlina Gorman opened up a link to Deep Space 9 when
she was safely ensconced in the captain’s ready room
for a modicum of privacy “Captain Barack?”

The gruff voice of the Captain of Deep Space 9 came
across the comm. Link. {{Commander Gorman, how are
things going over on the dark side?}}

Kat smiled slightly, “The dark side Captain? Did you
not just see the light display the prophets decided to
give us?”

Captain Barack was silent for a few moments and then
spoke again his tone was less humorous but no less
friendly towards his colleague on the other side of
the wormhole, {{Sorry I was on deck, that light was on
both sides of the wormhole?}}

“Yeah, Captain Kane has gone to keep an eye on the
Bajorans on this side, with the new temple opening on
the GATE I’m guessing they’re going to see this as
some kind of sign.”

Barack was quiet for a moment, {{what aren’t you
telling me?}}

“We think that in that light display we where given an
orb.”

The comm. Link was filled with a good few minutes of
swearing and then the CO of DS9 sighed, {{OK, there
are some theories…}}

Scene: CO’s ready room
TI: only a couple of moment later
Captain Michael Kane stepped into his ready room after
being pointed in that direction by the ops officer
when he asked for the XO, “what’s going on?” he asked
without preamble.

“Have we handed the orb over to the Bajoran’s?” Kat
asked looking up at the CO she went to vacate his
chair and again he indicated for her to stay sat down
as he glanced at his desk and a new pile of PADD’s

“Not yet I’m checking in and then heading down to the
shuttle bay we’re going to make sure this is an orb
before anyone gets their hands on it, I doubt we can
stall them for long though.” He answered sitting down
then suddenly wondered at the question. “why?

Kat looked up quickly and made sure she had Kane’s
full attention, “ok bare with me here. There used to
be theories that maybe the wormhole aliens had a
relationship with another race on this side of the
wormhole similar to the one they have with the
Bajorans, in my eyes this kind of makes sense, it
would explain why the wormhole opens to these two
places.”

Michael simply nodded to say he understood and for his
ExO to carry on. “Only when we came through the
wormhole we never came across anyone remotely like the
Bajorans no one else worshipped the aliens as gods,
but then they did have the Dominion to contend with.
So these theories where pretty much forgotten,”

“You think that maybe this orb isn’t meant for the
Bajorans at all.”

Kat sighed and carried on, “I get that this is a huge
coincidence if it isn’t but I do think it’s something
to keep an eye on, we don’t want a new race to appear
to commune with the prophets and suddenly claim the
Bajorans have stolen their orb.”

Kane stared at her and then glanced at his desk. “So
what’s all this?”

Kat smiled and indicated the PADD’s. “Everything we’ve
gleaned since we’ve been in the gamma quadrant from
fairy tales to historical records about the wormhole,
to be honest there isn’t that much, it might be worth
speaking to the Dominion representative.” She scowled
as she said it, “they’ll want to be kept informed.
Captain Barack has put the DS9 crew on a security
alert he’s sending across his contingency plan so we
can deal with this together.”

She stood up then. “Oh and Hannibal found a body but
he seems to have it all in hand and he’ll report in
when he knows more.” Kat smiled slightly as she came
around the desk and handed him the PADD she rested a
hand on her stomach. “I’ve got an appointment in
sickbay but if you need anything else then let me
know.”

Kane nodded, “thank you commander, I think I can
manage.”

Kat gave him a little bit of a smile as she headed out
of the door.

Scene: Sickbay
TI: a few minutes later

The XO of the GATEWAY OUTPOST sat on the bio bed
looking a little nervous as her husband’s assistant
scanned her in silence. He took the wand attached it
back into the tricorder and watched as the results
appeared on the screen.

Dr Roke nodded after a moment, “Can I ask, are you
under any unusual stress at the moment?”

Kat stared at the younger doctor, Jeff had sworn the
guy was good, that he was coming along and that he
trusted him to do these routine scans of his roughly
seven month pregnant wife. Right now though the XO of
the largest federation outpost in the gamma quadrant
had to wonder if he still had the brain cells he was
born with.

Roke smiled slightly as he looked up and saw the look
on his patients face. “I have to ask commander, I need
to know if you’re aware just how much stress your body
is dealing with at the moment, you have to remember
that everything you go through your baby is going
through.”

Kat nodded then, “no unusual stress, it’s pretty much
the usual stress, killers on the loose new orbs,
potential galactic wars to stop…” she paused and
offered him a weak smile. “High blood pressure again.”

Roke nodded his smile fading, “You need to take things
easy for a while at the risk of the baby coming
early.”

Kat scowled and he saw the look, “before you argue I’m
putting you on maternity leave, you’re entitled to it
just the same as everyone else in service.”

“I’m too busy.” She answered which caused the aCMO to
grin,

“That’s kind of the point commander.” He answered,
“Maternity leave until the baby is born take it easy
and maybe it’ll last the full two months.”

Kat groaned and rolled her eyes, “two months forced
leave?”

“At least.” The young man replied obviously trying to
hide a smile at the annoyance this revelation was
causing the older woman.

“You’re enjoying this.” She accused after a moment.

Roke shrugged, “think, about it this way, you can
spend some time with your kids before they have a new
addition to the family, you can do all the things you
just don’t have time to do because of Starfleet, it’ll
be good for you.”

Kat looked at him deciding that he truly was an idiot.
“You’re not giving me a choice in this are you?”

“No, I’m letting Captain Kane know now and alerting
command incase they want to send a replacement,” he
saw the look of pain cross her face, “it’s only a
couple of months I doubt they will find someone to
take over in short notice, I’m sure Captain Kane and
Dr Gorman can keep the whole place ticking over while
you’re on leave.”

Kat nodded briefly and then considered there was also
Gene. “Alright I shall consider myself relieved of
duty till I give birth then.” She answered “do you
mind if I wait for Jeff to come back?”

“Not a problem you know where his office is.”

Kat sighed and levered herself off the bed and towards
her husbands office.

**

NRPG: One from me with some character stuff and even a
little bit of mission stuff. Kat will still be around
although she is now officially on leave I’m sure
she’ll be sticking her nose in where it’s not needed
from time to time.

Jerome: hope what I did with DS9 and adding to the
situation was ok, if not of course you can just leave
it.
