========== "Further Investigations" Con't from Steve's "Decent" ========== Location: GS-2 Stardate: 2422 [2.7] 0531.1647 Scene: Sickbay Jeff took a seat at his desk, rubbing his eyes tiredly as he savoured the first non-busy moment he'd had the whole day. Ever since the second murder had occurred, there were more reports to correlate and more things to do. Jeff could have easily pawned the job off onto one of his underlings, but he was officially responsible for the medical aspect of the investigations into both murders and when he was officially responsible for something, he didn't like leaving it to others to do. His relief was short lived in any case, as his comm. Badge immediately chirped with communication. [[Medical lab to Dr. Gorman.]] Jeff sighed, tapping his comm. Badge. "Gorman here," he said. "What's your status?" [[We've finished our detailed analysis of the scan. Shall I send the results to your terminal?]] "Please," Jeff answered, swerving in his chair and turning on his terminal. Presently, the results of the scan flashed up in front of him and he gave them the quick once over, before whistling softly to himself at what he saw. "Computer," he said. "Locate Captain Kane." [[Captain Kane is currently in his ready room,]] answered the monotone voice. "Beautiful," Jeff murmured to himself, before downloading the information onto a PADD and heading for the exit. =========== Time Index: 5 minutes later Scene: CO's Ready Room "Enter," Michael Turlogh Kane answered, his voice tinged with irritation, at the door chime that had just sounded. He noticed the Chief Medical Officer walk in and dropped the PADD he had been reading onto the desk, leaning back in his chair and regarding the doctor expectantly. "I have some results you might be interested in," Jeff answered, before sitting down across from the Captain and handing the PADD to him. "What am I looking at?" Kane asked, blatantly uninterested in the graphs and diagrams that were on the PADD. "This is the analysis of that sample," Jeff answered. "It picked up three different and distinct patterns from three different people." "Who were they?" Kane asked, looking down at the PADD with renewed interest. "This first one here is consistent with the Vedek," Jeff answered, leaning across the table and pointing things out for Kane's benefit. "The second one is present in very trace amounts and is consistent with the first victim." Kane looked up at Jeff, surprised. "And what does that mean?" he asked. "It could mean any number of things," Jeff replied. "Based on the amount and concentration however, my guess would be that the same murder weapon was used at both scenes and just not thoroughly cleaned in between. If dried blood comes into contact with wet blood, some of the molecules can be coaxed free; especially if the murderer wiped a finger across the blade multiple times in order to get the blood he needed to scrawl along the wall." "Go on," Kane answered. "This third one," Jeff said, pointing. "Is a mystery. It doesn't correlate with anyone on the station; at least amongst the records that we have. I have asked for genetic profiles of patients that are seen at private practices and when those come in we'll run them through the system for a match as well." "Bajoran?" Kane asked. "Could be," Jeff answered. "Difficult to say for sure, since the amount was so minute. It was more luck than anything else that I got it in my sample. This particular pattern was only isolated by the most detailed scan the computer was capable of making; we're talking about a few dead and torn cells. There are big gaps in the profile, but we do have enough to say for certain that it's unique." "Even if you do find a match," Kane said. "It would only be approximate then, since you don't have the whole record." "That's correct sir," Gorman nodded his head. "It would only be approximate." "That's hardly inspiring." Jeff sighed. "It's a difficult thing," he said. "Both of these crimes are very slick. I wonder if perhaps this person hasn't done them before." "There's an idea," Kane reflected. "The Bajoran Government probably keeps DNA profiles on all of their criminals; perhaps you can liaise with them and see if you can get more profiles to run this sample against." Jeff nodded. "I'll get someone on it right away," he said. ============== NRPG: Great posts everyone! Steve -> I'll get to the interaction between our two characters in a future post; I figured I'd sit back and see if anyone else wanted to do anything first along those lines. Jerome -> Hope that was okay ============== Rahul Chandra <vrccan_at_gmail.com> Lieutenant Commander Jeffrey Gorman, MD Chief Medical Officer GS-2 From HyperNews_at_youth.net
