"Edging Forward"

Con't from Ken's "The Centre Cannot Hold"

Location: GS-2

Stardate: 2422 [2.7] 0602.1858

Scene: Sickbay

Jeff was seated at the desk in his office, drumming his fingers on the table
thoughtfully as he considered what the next move should be. He hadn't had
very long to think before footsteps walking into his office attracted his
attention and he looked up at his assistant expectantly.

"We did the liaising with the independent medical practices on the station
as you requested sir," Roke reported, handing Jeff a PADD. "Here are the
results."

Jeff quickly scanned the PADD and raised an eyebrow in surprise. "That's
quite a lot of people that report medical equipment missing," he said.

"Yeah it is," Roke answered. "From what I gather, many of those practices
don't do inventory on a regular basis; just when they need something. So
that means that a lot of the missing items might be from the explosions that
took place on the station last year."

"You're kidding me," Jeff answered, shocked at the lack of protocol on the
part of a lot of the independent doctors. "Those were months ago and they
*still* haven't figured out exactly what they lost?"

"That seems to be the story sir," Roke answered.

"Damn it," Jeff muttered to himself, tossing the PADD down on the desk
disgustedly. Its contents were most likely useless now, but he made a
mental note to check through it thoroughly as soon as possible anyway.

He looked up at Roke again. "Okay, what about our own inventories?"

"I checked the numbers against the closing changes from yesterday," Roke
answered. "Everything appeared to be in order."

"Well, that doesn't surprise me," Jeff answered. "If there were some
instruments missing, I figured it would be from one of the independent
practices; of course that might be a dead end now."

"Yes sir," Roke answered, uncertain of what else to say.

Gorman frowned, shaking his head slightly. "Are there any suppliers on the
station that might sell such precise bladed instruments?" he asked.

"I'm not sure sir," Alec said, shaking his own head. "But I can find out."

"Do that," Jeff advised. "And see if you can get full details of all of the
transactions they've completed over the last few weeks."

"Will do sir," Alec said, nodding his head before making his exit from the
CMO's office. Jeff leaned back in his chair slightly, considering the
options still in front of him. He still had to contact the Bajorans in
order to get that list of criminals for the DNA comparison, but the last
time he'd tried to get in touch with one of the officials a few hours
earlier, he had been told that everyone was busy.

"I don't doubt it," Jeff muttered to himself, thinking that the orb and
possibly even the murder of the Vedek must have been keeping the planetary
officials pretty busy. He actually wasn't even sure why there wasn't more
commotion about the Vedek's death here on the station and just as he was
thinking that, his comm. Badge chirped.

[[O'Patterson to Sickbay.]]

Jeff tapped his comm. Badge. "Sickbay here, what can I do for you Mr.
O'Patterson?" he asked.

[[Word of the Vedek's death has now been spread amongst the Bajoran
population,]] Hannibal reported. [[And there have been some incidents as a
result. I need you to send a medical team to the temple to help deal with
some of the injuries.]]

"I'll get right on it," Jeff replied, before closing the link. After
contacting one of the medical teams and instructing them to meet him on the
promenade, he grabbed a medkit and headed out the door.
