"Well.This is Interesting"

Con't from Sarah's "The Avatar of the God of Pain"

=========

Location: GS-2

Stardate: 2422 [2.7] 0611.0436

Scene: Sickbay

"Xana did *WHAT*?!"

Jeff couldn't believe it; he just stared across the desk at his assistant,
his mouth partially open unconsciously as he tried to digest the information
the other doctor had just given him.

Roke coughed uncomfortably. "From what I gathered from the report that just
came in.she.err.appears to have gone to try to find her husband."

Jeff shook his head, getting up and beginning to pace back and forth behind
the desk in his office. "That family is insane," he muttered. "Husband
gets kidnapped and the wife goes after him.of all the insane." he stopped,
his mad rush of thoughts having momentarily overrun his ability for
vocalization.

Roke was silent. He wondered whether he should point out the blatant
hypocrisy of Jeff's words, but not having seen his boss this flustered
before, he decided for the preservation of his job that it probably was not
a good idea at that particular moment.

"Okay," Jeff said, sinking back down into his chair. "Well, there's nothing
we can do about that right now anyway. It's in Hannibal's hands right now.
Do you have something else for me?"

"Yes sir," Roke answered, laying some PADDs on the desk one after another.
"This is the list of potentials that the Bajoran government sent over. This
is the list of suppliers on the station and here are the results from the
third murder."

"Great," Jeff said, briefly glancing over the two. He picked up the list of
suppliers and handed it back to Roke. "Deal with this one; I'll check over
the other two in more detail."

"Yes Sir," Roke said, taking the PADD and beating a hasty retreat from the
office. Jeff frowned, staring ahead for a few moments as he forced his mind
to calm down. Having re-established some modicum of concentration, he
finally got down to business.

Jeff had been lucky in that some more of the specific genetic sequence of
the missing third person from the second murder had been reconstructed by
data retrieved from the third murder scene. It was just short of where he
needed it to be to easily make a match however.

The situation frustrated him; the evidence was always just below where it
would make things immeasurably easier to track. As he went through this
case more and more, Jeff became more certain that the killer had to have
some kind of medical background. He had run what he had of the genetic code
against the database the Bajorans had provided and about one fifth of the
way through the scan, the computer had picked up nothing. There were still
several hours left in the scan however and since there was nothing more he
could do here for the moment, he got up and left his office.

Time Index: 1 hour later

Scene: Gorman Quarters

Jeff's eyes opened in stages and he yawned, getting up off the couch. He
was disoriented for a moment before he remembered that he had come home and
started reading on the couch.

**You fell asleep not long before I got home,** Jeff turned and smiled
tiredly across at his wife.

"How long was I asleep?" he asked, walking over to the table where she was
sitting.

"About half an hour or so," Kat said, getting up. She hugged him gently and
sighed as she felt his arms encircle her. The married couple stayed like
that for a few minutes in silence, each with their own private thoughts.

**It just seems to get worse as time goes on doesn't it,** Kat said.

Jeff didn't reply immediately, just gently laying his cheek on top of her
hair. **Seems that way,** he said finally. It had been a rough couple of
days, affecting them both in different ways.

"Where's Dahlia?" Jeff asked suddenly, feeling stupid for not have realized
the obvious question beforehand.

"In their quarters," Kat answered. "I checked on her one more time before I
left. She's in the company and care of a lot of the members of Xana's
personal security staff."

This comment was met with dual silence from both as they thought about
Dahlia. The unspoken worry between the two of them was what would happen to
her if neither Gene nor Xana came back alive. It was unspoken, but through
the link that the couple shared, they both immediately realized that the
other was thinking the same thing.

"I don't know," Kat said with a sigh. "But I would rather not think about
it until we know more certainly what their fates are."

"Right," Jeff said. "Let's not think about it."

NRPG: Well, it took me three days, but I finally managed to come up with
something that I wasn't immediately disgusted with.

Well, here it is; probably not my best work, but that's what comes from
writing for a pacifist doctor in a time of mass killings ;)

Sarah/Ken -> I wasn't sure at all if Xana and Gene had put anything down
legally in regards to what would happen to Dahlia if they both happened to
pass away so I left it as vague as possible. I wanted to include something
though, since I figured it would be reasonably high up as a worry in both
Kat and Jeff's thoughts.

Joy -> Hope the last scene was okay with you.let me know if I goofed

Jerome -> there you go.I figured something out!
