"Life and death"
(Cont'd from "where you going to run to?")

Location: GS-2

Scene: Sickbay

Stardate: 2.73006.1029

Roke’s mind was a blur as his colleagues moved quickly
sedating Kat to make sure she didn’t wake from the unconsciousness she had
slipped into. He couldn’t simply transport the baby out there where too many
blood vessels that could rupture and make the haemorrhaging even worse.

Cutting her to perform a caesarean would almost certainly be
the XO’s death sentence.

Roke mentally ticked off what he needed to do. She was
haemorrhaging from the placental abruption as the placental lining separated
from the uterus, if he didn’t stop the bleeding she was going to die, but
stopping it wasn’t the priority as they pushed through bloods and plasma
keeping her alive.

If they didn’t act now the baby wouldn’t even have the 50% chance
it had now and the longer baby was in distress the more likely shock would
follow.

He couldn’t afford to guess with the transporter technology.
“Prepare for a caesarean, and get me all the clotting agents on the station.”
He muttered the last bit to himself already aware that the nurses and doctor
around him where well aware of what needed doing.

Scene: CEO’s quarters

Ensign j’kaor was relaxing in the only way she knew how. It
was her last night of freedom before her foster kids returned home with her
parents in tow. They’d spouted some kind of nonsense about looking in on the
GATEWAY the newest and largest federation outpost but JK had a feeling they
where checking in on her. It didn’t sit well with her view of herself as being
an independent Starfleet officer.

 The body next to her
grunted and rolled over, J’kaor scowled and lifted herself from the bed
wrapping a bath robe around her frame she leaned against the bulkhead with the
view out into space, from here she could see the wormhole, she spotted the
colourful spatial anomaly out there, she couldn’t see the queues of ships, just
the gaping maw of the way home hanging on the edge of space.

The Klingon blinked once, when she opened her eyes she was
sure the wormhole was smaller. She glanced at the bed sure he wouldn’t noticed
and then rubbed at her eyes “Maybe the humans are right and you will go blind.”
She muttered quietly to herself as she opened her eyes.

Space was dark, “Dor-sho-gha!”
her fist slammed against the reinforced glass as she stared at
glittering stars where only moments ago the wormhole had been hanging.

The noise startled
the sleeping man in her bed and he shot up. “What is it?”

“ghuy'cha.” She took
a deep steadying breath. “The wormhole has gone”

Luke moved
clambering off the bed and standing staring out into space. “Where, where is
it?”

J’Kaor glared at him
and sighed. **idiot** “get out.” She commanded after a second.

He stared at her in
incomprehension. “what?”

“I said get out, I’m
going to have to go to work and you’re going to have to go.” She grumbled at
him moving to the low desk and computer in her room and tapping into Ops. It
was true she would have to go to work but not straight away.

Her eyes scanned the
lists and caught a name IKV K’ral her finger traced the line across, there in
all it’s glory was a time into the wormhole sent to Ops from the Bajoran side
of the wormhole with an expected arrival time firstly at this side of the
wormhole and then another expected arrival time at the GATEWAY. The expected time of the arrival on this side of the wormhole was in half an hour.

Luke finally
mastered the art of getting his pants back on and stood in the doorway. “So…
Erm last night.” He started nervously.

JK ignored him
pulling up another list of the manifest the K’ral had sent before departing.

“I’ll just go.”

There as clear to
her as her own would be were the names of her parents and children. JK heard
the sound of the door closing she stared at the names again and then lifted her
head letting out a blood curdling scream of mourning.

Scene: Sickbay

Jeff moved through the
decontamination chamber in a blur, a nurse helped him on with the protective
clothing and the second door opened into the sterilised operating room.

The first thing he
saw was Angie, the midwife holding a small unmoving bundle. Jeff swallowed and
turned slightly to see Roke leaning over his wife Dermal regenerator in hand.

Glancing around his
wife he spotted the blood line in both arms a plasma line was running through
as well. The anaesthetist glanced up, his eyes had previously been on Kat’s
vitals the blood pressure and count along with her heart rate.

Jeff took a second
to listen to the room and then moved forwards. “Doctor Gorman.”

Jeff nodded and
waited a brief moment Roke was concentrating though so a nurse explained where
they were at including the delivering of his baby.

Roke suddenly swore
and glanced up. “Damn it, I can’t close, she’s not clotting.”

Jeff glanced to a
table by his side and picked up a hypospray of platelets pressing it against
his wife’s neck before being told to. “Try again.” He said softly.

Scene: Intensive
Care

The baby had been
moved Angie had placed him in an incubator and removed him from the operating
room and into the small side room used for intensive care. Lieutenant Natacha
Ozbay was doing some brief checks on the small form.

“He’s very blue.”
Angie said softly watching her colleague from across the small biobed.

Natacha nodded. “we
need to get him into an oxygen chamber. His blood oxygen levels are very low.”

The midwife had
nodded and was already moving typing something into the small console on the
side of the incubator increasing the oxygen level in the air to a point where
each breath would be helping to oxygenate his blood stream.

“What about brain
damage?” Angie asked.

The doctor shook her
head. “Keep an eye on his blood levels, his oxygen level and make sure theres
no signs of shock.”

Angela Defrane
nodded her head dark hair coming lose from the pony tail she’d had it in. She
glanced up as the door opened and noticed a Vorta stood in the doorway. “Can I
help you?” she asked him making her voice carry to the doorway without raising
it.

“No… I mean yes.” He smiled as charming a smile as he could. “I’m from Ambassador Vertec’s office and I was just wondering how mother and baby where doing.”

Angie scowled slightly. “I’m sorry, you can’t be here. If you’re a friend of the family you’ll need to wait outside for now.”

Beran’s eyes drifted to the incubator briefly and then he smiled and nodded. “Of course. Tell Doctor Gorman I’m here. Beran,” he answered the question before she could speak.

“Beran from Vertec’s office?” Angie double checked.

The Vorta nodded and took a step back from the room allowing the door to close in front of him.

Angie and Natacha exchanged a look of confusion and then went back to dealing with their charge.

*************

NRPG: Ragy Tag if you want it.

Thought I'd have the closing of the wormhole as something more than just losing the way home. At least for JK. Plus I've always wanted to write for a rampaging Klingon.
