========= “Zzzzzz…” Con’t from Jasmina’s “United We Stand – Divided We Fall OR Learn to Embrace Your Inner Freak and then Embrace your Neighbour” ========= Location: GS-2 Stardate: 2422 [2.7] 0914.2302 Scene: Sickbay Lieutenant Commander Jeffrey Gorman, Medical Doctor and Chief Medical Officer of GATEWAY, was wide awake at his desk and hard at work. The Doctor had been up all of the previous night reviewing some of the changes that had been made to the medical structure and in particular the relationship between the Starfleet Medical Forces and the private physicians on the station. As he read the last report, he clucked in annoyance; things were going to be more difficult than he’d imagined along those lines. One thing that doctors tended to have was a big ego and many of the private doctors on the station had begun to question why Starfleet should be in charge of the station’s medicine; especially given the situation with the partition. With a newly born son at home and a wife on maternity leave, Jeff didn’t appreciate having to put in extra hours, but he acknowledged that the gravity of the situation most definitely required it. He still wasn’t particularly impressed with his Commanding Officer and the decision the man had made regarding secession, but at the moment he was keeping that opinion to himself. He wasn’t particularly politically savvy, but when he’d come to the realization that his vocal opinion against cessation appeared to be in the minority, he had decided to tone things down a bit. It was in this bad mood that Jeff looked up to see Lt. Roke walk in, an expression on his face that suggested to Jeff that he was about to receive more bad news. “Let me guess,” Jeff said, leaning back in his chair and looking at Roke critically. “All the biobeds malfunctioned at once.” “If only,” Roke said, shaking his head and wearily easing himself down into the chair opposite the CMO’s. “We have a casualty on the sickbay staff and a missing changeling.” Jeff looked at him as if he’d just been slapped. “A missing changeling?” he asked, dumbfounded. “In spite of all of the precautions that security forced us to put around him?” Roke shrugged. “I guess so,” he said. “All we know is that we have a dead nurse and one pissed off security chief making her way up here.” Jeff sighed, rubbing his temples in frustration. “Dealing with that woman is not what I need right now,” he muttered to himself, getting up and signalling to Roke to accompany him to the scene. A few moments later, the two had arrived at the scene of the crime to see one of the medical staff gathering what medical evidence they could and two incredulous security guards watching the scene with disbelief on their expressions. Jeff and Alec joined the two in watching for a few moments before Jeff shook his head slightly. “This is not good,” he said. “We tried scanning for Odan’s life signs, but came up short,” Roke said. “No, I don’t expect that you would have found anything,” Jeff replied, frowning for a moment before calling to the investigator and asking what the time of death was. “Around six hours ago,” came the reply. “The changeling’s probably already been through a bunch of transformations by now,” Jeff said. “Probably leaving some dead bodies in its wake.” He watched for a few more moments, before shaking his head again. “Damn,” he muttered. ========= NRPG: A long overdue reply to Kat’s post. I was going to write more, but this week’s been so completely hectic for me that I’m totally out of energy.
