Location: USS PATRIOT
Stardate. 2.71229.0011
Scene: Marine Fighter Bay

"You." Tanith prowled up behind the young man who was up to his elbows in the Marine fighters. "How close are you to done?"

Kyle looked up at the cadaverously thin woman who stood over him with her hands on her hips, her yellow eyes gleaming with the intensity that only comes with adrenaline
and lack of sleep. Her mouth was pinched into a thin line, and her lean limbs were tense.

"Almost done, what can I do for you Lieutenant?"

"Tanith. Tanith will do fine. I need help getting my ships into fighting shape, but all the engineers seem to feel as though that's of secondary importance to getting ready for
all evacuations that are coming up." She dropped her hands off her hips and curled and uncurled her fists reflexively. "As if evacuating is going to do anything if we can't
protect the ships being used. My fighters are pretty dinged up, we've got the major stuff done, but they've still got kinks to work out, and I'm not sure my pilots are good
enough to survive flying quirky birds."

"You don't seem to have a very high opinion of your pilots." Kyle commented, as he stood up and wiped his hands on a rag. "I'm just finishing up here, I can definitely help
you with your fighters after this."

"Great." Tanith scraped her bony fingers through her wiry shock of black hair, making the streaks of white at her temples stand up on end. "And it's not that I don't have a
good opinion of my pilots- it's just that they're inexperienced. This whole situation is completely different from training, and unfortunately it has a really steep learning curve.
The last thing I want is to have to send all of them home in boxes."

"I didn't really expect to hear that from you." The ensign gathered up his tools and fell into step behind her. "Mav made it sound like you were a whole lot less... sentimental?
Mentioned you've propositioned him as well."

"Er." Tanith's sallow skin flushed pale pink. "Well, the man is an impressive specimen, and I like my men built with good eyes, and his butt- Michelangelo's David has *nothing*
on that rump."

She trailed off as she noticed the expression on Kyle's face.

"Gross!" Kyle covered his ears, making gagging noises. "That's my adopted father you're talking about!!!"

"I didn't know that. But relax, I don't want to date him. Just, you know, lay him." She paused as Kyle pretended to vomit over a railing. "That didn't help did it."

"Not at all. You probably ought to change the subject."

"Yeeeeaaaaaahhhh. So. Lets get to that fighter bay. I have two whose engines are out of alignment- they pull to the right- another whose deceleration unit seems to be
lagging, and then another whose internal damping field is working at 70% efficiency- the G forces on the inside are almost unbearable."

Scene: Naval fighter bay.

"That's the last of it." Kyle stood up and leaned against the nose of the fighter.

"Thanks." Tanith unbent herself and stroked the underbelly of the ship with a slow loving motion. "You're fast, Ensign. I'm tempted to try and convince them to put you on our
ship maintenance regularly."

She extended her hand to him, he took her hand in a firm shake.

"The pleasure'll be mine, as long as you don't tell me how you want to do my old man." Kyle winked as she squirmed.

"It's a deal then." Tanith let out a sharp bark of laughter. She waved her head to indicate the other pilots. "We're going to get food before we go to get a quick nap so we're
fresh for any action. You want to join us?"

"Sure, it's about break time anyhow."

Scene: Counselor's office.

"Hey. Anyone here?" Tanith leaned into the room. The Bajoran counselor looked up. "Um, I thought I'd come to talk to you."

"Tanith, isn't it?" Tam gestured to the chair infront of hers. "Is everything okay? You look as though you've not had very much sleep."

"No time for sleep," Tanith said dryly "we're in a war here, if you hadn't noticed. I sent my people to go grab a nap before they get called out again."

"But you can't sleep." It wasn't a question, more a simple statement of fact. The human woman let out a long sigh and rubbed her eyes with her knuckles.

"Clearly. Are you going to keep stating the obvious and asking dumb questions? If you are I'll just go talk to my fish, because that's how useful you're going to be if you keep
this up." Tanith snapped, her brows drawing together irately. "Sorry."

"No problem." Tam responded soothingly. "Everyone's a little tense right now. But I'm right in assuming that it's not the tension or adrenaline keeping you up?"

"Yeah. It's-" Tanith halted and stumbled over the rest of the sentence "It's just that I hate that I have to be here piloting this big hulking, well protected battleship, while
I'm sending these kids out to die. I'm a better pilot than any of them, and I feel like I'm going to send them out to be cannon fodder, while I sit unable to help them at all."
