Scene: Arboretum
Kate walked amidst torn down trees, roots of plants pulled out from the ground and charcoal coloured buds from flowers found lying on the ground. Her dog, William Wallace trotted beside her, sniffing a burnt out branch at the side. The Scot also brought Mary Sue for the stroll in the arboretum. The chimpanzee was busy climbing whatever trees remained from the battles with the Dominion. MacNeil’s heart sank at the sight of the desolation of one of the beautiful areas in the station. During her time as GS-2 CMO, Kate enjoyed spending time in the arboretum. She had picnics with her pets, William Wallace, Mary Sue and Esmeralda Tharanuil, the green parrot. Mary Sue, especially, loved the arboretum as she was in her natural environment.
Kate recalled the Viskulan wood section of the arboretum, below a holographic night sky. She remembered enjoying watching the trees with their shimmering blue leaves glow in the dark, as caused by the full moon above. The Nuimon hybrid sighed, knowing she wasn’t going to see any glowing blue trees during that trip. Realizing it was time to return to duty on the MERCY, the doctor gathered her pets and headed to the turbo lift.
Spotting a tall man with broad, protruding shoulders under a long coat approaching her, Kate smiled in recognition of the officer. “Thomas Varn?” William Wallace barked his greetings.
Thomas nodded, producing a tiny smile. “Kate, what a coincidence.”
“So, what are you doing here?” The Scottish woman inquired, happily.
The science officer replied. “I’ve just been recently transferred here to assist the science and engineering teams in the rebuilding efforts.” He inquired a second later. “You?”
Kate answered, stepping out of the way to allow a team of construction workers to pass by. “I am on a temporary assignment as CMO of the USS MERCY, part of the taskforce sent to the station during the first battle.”
Thomas mused. “So you were here for the whole conflict then..”
“Right,” the hybrid confirmed. “Mind you, the situation was chaotic.”
Varn nodded. “I can imagine.”
Kate inquired, changing the subject. “So where have you been since we all returned from the ISC dimension?”
“On the STONEHENGE, with a lot of the former PROPHECY crew,” Thomas replied, making Kathryn wonder about Aerdan.
The Scott shook her head. “Okay.”
Varn questioned. “Where were you working before coming here?”
“I was sent to Starfleet Medical HQ, immediately after returning to E4,” Kate stated, sighing inwardly. “And now I’m wondering whether I go back there or remain with the MERCY medical staff.”
Nodding softly Thomas nodded as his eyes slowly began to swirl with colors as they did when his mood changed, “Well, I’m sure that Daisy, I mean Commander Davidson, will be sad to see you leave in any sense.”
Slowly searching the crowds faces Thomas desperately wanted to make sure that Daisy wasn’t about as he’d preferred to keep his coat on amongst the numerous officers. The room was more like a small junk pile in a corner than an arboretum but it was getting back to its former glory, as officers cleaned up and replanted things here and there. Looking around Thomas smiled and nodded.
“You know I wonder if anyone will remember we were here in a few years, and that these plants were planted by the crew of the station, or will they just over look it. Strange how we don’t miss things until they are either taken from us violently or we lose them by our own hand,” he stated turning back to Kate.
The Scot sighed. “Maybe they will, maybe they won’t.” The two officers stood observing the work going on before the Nuimon hybrid spoke in a low voice. “One thing for sure is no one will be able to forget what happened here on the station in the last few months.”
“I have to agree,” the aCSciO nodded. “It’s a good thing I haven’t run into any mutated plants so far.”
Kate perked up an eyebrow and was confused. “Mutated plant? What do you mean?”
Thomas merely stated, not wanting to say much on the subject. “It’s a long story.”
“Okay,” Kate shook her head, not wanting to pry. The MERCY’s CMO eyed the coat with concern in her indigo eyes, which changed to black. The Scottish woman recalled the time, when she and Thomas were part of the away team that were captured by the Cairons in the ISC dimension. MacNeil couldn’t still forget the horrors that were happening in the Cairon medical facility and felt saddened at the time over the genetic manipulation made on Varn, which led to the appearance of the wings. **That must have been tough for him, dealing with these changes, ** the Scot mused sadly. The human/Nuimon sighed, glancing at the chimp, which was becoming restless. “I need to return back to the MERCY to do paperwork. There are tons of reports to work on.”
“I’ll see you around,” Thomas stated and watched the tall woman leave for the turbo lift.
“You too,” Kate waved back and stepped inside the lift.
