“Yesterday She was a Doctor…Today She’s an Ops Officer”
(contd from Rahul’s ‘Strategy and Tactics’)

Scene: Kathryn MacNeil’s quarters
Scottish bagpipes suddenly blared into the room, awakening the sleeping auburn haired woman. Kate grumbled tossing around in her sleeping bag, unwilling to get up and face the torturous life of not being able to practice medicine, a price paid for wilting under pressure. William Wallace crept up next to his mistress and nuzzled her affectionately. Kate petted the dog, murmuring sadly. “Seems like you’re the only understanding one around here.” Mary Sue squealed as she hopped from one box to another. The Scot groaned, eyeing the chimp. “Can’t wait till I drop her in the pet day care.” Her beagle barked in agreement.
Kate’s quarters were covered with boxes of stuff that transferred over from the MERCY. The Scot would have to make arrangements to get the rest of things brought from her apartment in Paris, EARTH. She also needed a bed and had to order one from the promenade.
[[Ops to Lt. Cmdr. MacNeil,]] Ezri Braxx, one of the Ops officers called.
Kate acknowledged. “MacNeil here.”
The Trill informed, professionally. [[You have an incoming transmission from EARTH.]]
“Understood,” the newly minted chief operations officer nodded as she got up from the makeshift bed and headed over to the console. The Scot pressed a button on the console, where the screen switched to an image of her parents with worried face expressions. Kate greeted in excitement. “Mum, Dad, I’m so happy to see you!”
Malcolm MacNeil leaned closer, his round face taking up most of the screen. {{Lassie, we had to call to see if you’re alright.”
The Scot sighed heavily. “I take it you saw the FedCom footage.”
{{Oh it was dreadful,}} Elizabeth Warwick, Kate’s step-mother jumped in, trying to squeeze a space for herself at the screen.
The Ops officer glanced downwards in dismay. “Yes, it was embarrassing. I really messed up and ruined Daisy’s life.”
Her father disagreed, vehemently. {{Nonsense, Katie. You were harassed by that reporter.}} He clenched his fists together and ranted. {{If I get my hands on that witch, I’ll feed her to the loch ness monster. No one hurts my little girl like that and gets away with it.}}
Elizabeth urged, clutching her husband’s arm. {{Malcolm, please. Calm yourself down.}}
Kate said, softly. “Well, what I did was wrong and I’m paying for that mistake.”
{{Oh Katie, I’m so sorry this had happened,}} the Englishwoman comforted. {{But you didn’t mean to hurt anyone.}}
“But I did,” the half-Nuimon stated, tears welling up in her hazel eyes. “I spoiled not only Daisy’s life but her children’s as well.”
Malcolm brushed her comment off with a wave of his hand. {{Lass, Cmdr. Davidson will get over it. She’s a grown woman and should learn to toughen up, instead of crying over being called something silly like ‘cat woman’.”
“Dad, please!” Kate pleaded. “Daisy’s right to be angry. I broke the rule by revealing confidential medical information to a reporter and I’m punished for it like I deserve.”
Elizabeth questioned, becoming alarmed. {{Punished? How, Katie?}}
The Human/Nuimon hybrid gulped before answering. “Cmdr. Davidson contacted Starfleet Medical regarding my breach of ethics and they in turn suspended my medical license for six months.” She cringed, watching her dad gape in disbelief.
Her step-mother inquired. {{What are you going to do now?}}
“Daisy’s assigned me as Ops officer here on the station,” Kate answered, sighing.
{{Wow, that lass is childish pouring salt into the wound like that,}} Malcolm growled, becoming red with anger. {{She should have had the decency to send you away and let someone else handle your situation.}}
The younger MacNeil spoke in a slightly quivering voice. “Well it’s done and I have to pay the price for the next six months.”
Her father softened as he looked sadly at his little girl. {{Aww…lassie.}} Malcolm was tempted to give his daughter a hug. {{Just remember no matter what happens, we’ll always be there for you,}} the elder MacNeil assured.

Scene: Operations Center-> Ops officer’s office
Kathryn MacNeil entered the station’s main operations hub slowly and peered around the room, nervously. Pulling at the golden collar, the new chief of operations felt she was out of her own skin. Never in her entire career, had the Scot expected to be wearing a gold uniform and working in an area where she had absolutely no experience. Well, she was resigned to the fact working in Ops for the next six months was penance for her stupidity in dealing with that reporter. Part of her believed it was better to scrub the floors down in Main Engineering than work in the same floor as Daisy. But Kate knew it was Davidson’s way of punishing her.
Lt. Trella Palandora approached the former doctor and informed, politely with no emotion in her voice. “Lt. Cmdr. MacNeil, Commander Kor wants to see you after you’ve gotten the chance to settle in your office.”
“Understood.” The Scot acknowledged, feeling butterflies in her stomach. All of a sudden the half-Nuimon became anxious over meeting the station’s ExO. Kate braced for a frosty reception with Eishnala and her other crewmates. Well, maybe she hoped they would not hate her like Daisy did at the moment. The Scottish woman gulped trekking her way through the corridor and finally reached her office.
Entering her access codes at the side panel, the door slid open and Kate quickly went inside. The room was spartan at best, where only a black desk and chair stood. The Nuimon hybrid walked over to the desk and placed the PADD down. “I will need to do some redecorating,” the Scot mused, dryly. “Actually…a lot of redecorating.” Kathryn felt with all the tension and hostility she would face, decided to spend the majority of her time in the office.
“Well,” the Scot decided. “Time to go see Commander Kor.”

TI: A few minutes later
The meeting was going smoothly so far. Kate did not sense any apprehension from the other woman, although the Scot wondered if Eishnala was just good at hiding her feelings. The Andorian was professional, something MacNeil appreciated very much. She listened intently as the ExO went through the former medical officer’s requirements needing to be fulfilled for the duration of her suspension.
Kor began. “For now, any concerns from you will be brought to me and I will pass them along to Commander Davidson.”
“Yes ma’am,” the Scot nodded.
Eishnala added, glancing briefly at the contents of a PADD. “You will need to meet with Lt. Crichton and Lt. Varn to make arrangements for taking refresher courses in Engineering and Science as soon as possible.”
“Okay.” The auburn haired woman clasped her hand tightly to prevent her ExO from seeing them shaking.
The Andorian woman looked up, studying the half-Nuimon. “As required by your suspension, you will undergo mandatory psychiatric evaluations, conducted by Lt. Nurunyon, once a month.”
“Understood, ma’am.” Kate nodded, knowing Starfleet Medical would want to make sure she was mentally stable by the end of her suspension period.
“Well that ends our meeting unless you have any questions.” Eishnala stated, handing a PADD over to the other woman.
Kate shook her head indicating she had nothing to ask.
The ExO concluded. “Good, then you’re dismissed.”
