"SURPRISE"
( Continued from Jamie's "But I kinda like the music" )
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Location: USS CHANTICO
Scene: Sickbay -> Corridor outside sickbay -> Sickbay
Time Index: Two hours after his surgery
Stardate: 2.80222.0127
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Decked out in her formal uniform, her hair tied up neatly in
a chignon, Daisy groaned as Dr. Poe described Thomas's condition.
Probably more than anyone, she understood all the memories it
brought up for him. His injuries and being back in a sickbay, having to
have surgery. In a similar situation, being put under scrutiny and the
morbid fascination of people who aren't just trying to help you - but are also
enjoying how "particularly unique" you are....Daisy wouldn't exactly be a
happy camper herself.
His withdrawl into himself, though? His shutting down like this? She
couldn't afford to indulge him.
"Give us the room". Daisy ordered Dr. Poe gently. The Orion female
gave her nurse a look
and they left.
Daisy moved gently at first. She rubbed his hair lightly with her fingers,
the same way she would have done for Gavi or LJ if they were sick. Then,
she said, "Thomas, get up. We need you back
on the surface."
He sighed finally, "I just want to go back."
Misunderstanding him, she nodded. "Right, yes. It's been long enough.
You're fit to go back to ANDARA."
He grinned weakly. "My dream. I had the strangest dream. I had a
daughter. A beautiful daughter. Then, my ship's core breached and I
was dying...seems so strange to be back here now. It seems
impossible Alyissa and her mother were just a dream."
Daisy sighed. "Thomas. You have to get up."
He groaned. "Daisy, no. I should just go back to the station."
Finally annoyed, Daisy stepped back and snapped. "On your feet,
Lieutenant."
He rolled his eyes and pulled himself up to a sitting position. Then,
he gently stepped down from the biobed. The change in position made
him slightly dizzy and Daisy noticed.
"The sooner you start walking around, the better those new eyes will feel. "
She assured him.
He groaned. "Right."
Annoyed, Daisy snapped at him. "You should be celebrating. You should
be happy. Do you realize how difficult it was to reproduce a pair of eyes
altered exactly as your's were when you were a kid? Do you realize how
close you came to remaining blind? I mean ...whatever you were
dreaming...how can it compare to that?"
His shoulders sagged. "You're right. I know."
"When the situation on ANDARA has been dealt with, I want to hear
all about your dream..." Daisy sighed. "I do. But for now, let's just be
glad you are fit to get back to work. "
He managed a weak grin. "You look hot."
She rolled her eyes and blushed slightly. "I'm not supposed to look
'hot', I'm supposed to look 'formidable'. The Prime Minister and the
Vorta ambassador have agreed to give me an audience
in an hour...."
Thomas stepped towards her concerned. "You're going down there
yourself? I'll go with you."
"I need you to be back with Kate helping her and Lt. Commander Kor
investigate what's happened to the children on the surface." Daisy
chided him. "I'm going to distract the local government
by attempting open treaty negotiations..."
Thomas' mouth gaped open. "Are you insane?"
She grinned weakly. "Probably. But, I've brought the media with
me to document everything and that should help ensure my safety."
The main doors opened and in walked the reporter, Clooney St. George.
The handsome reporter was dressed in a navy blue suit with a civilian
comm badge.
"Is everything ok, Commander? Shouldn't we be getting ready to leave?"
Clooney's stomach knotted with guilt as Daisy gave him what looked
like a genuinely friendly and trusting smile. "Yes, Mr. St. George.
I just wanted to check on Lt. Jg. Varn before we left."
"Yes...." Clooney smiled weakly . "I heard you had an injured officer
but I didn't hear exactly what happened to him."
"And, you're not going to." Daisy cut him off gently.
Clooney gave her a broad, boyish grin. "Ma'am! Yes, Ma'am!"
Daisy blushed deeply and smiled.
Thomas looked back and forth between the two of them as this
exchange happened. Then, he rolled his eyes and he chided Daisy
with a smirk. "What is it with you?"
She smacked him on the shoulder and chided him. "Shaddup and get
back to work. Lieutenant."
Daisy turned to go and Mr. St. George gallantly offered her his arm.
Dr. Poe approached them in the corridor and glanced inward at
Thomas. It pleased her to see the winged man walking
across the room to pick up his coat.
Then, alarms began going off and the comm system beeped.
[[ "Dr. Poe, prepare for emergency transport from the surface" ]]
Clooney gave Daisy a strange look. "What's going on?"
Recognizing Kate's voice, Daisy shook her head at the reporter
and barked the order, "You, turbo lift - out of here, now...."
Daisy practically shoved him aside and stepped into sickbay
with Dr. Poe and Lt. Varn. Just as the doors whooshed shut,
Clooney made out the form of an adult materializing with a
smaller, possibly preteen-sized child.
He quickly pressed the button, wanting to go in.
No responce.
Then, a security team emerged from the turbo lift and politely
requested that he leave and wait for Commander Davidson in the
ready room.
Inside sickbay, Kate stepped back from the still convulsing boy as
Dr. Poe began working on him. The child's mouth was filled with foam.
Daisy scoffed at the scene. "Kate?! What the hell?!"
Frustrated, Kate held up her hand and warned Daisy. "Do not yell at
me. I had no choice, ok? They tried some crude herbal remedy and
the boy started seizing. I scanned him and ...."
Dr. Poe began cursing in her native tongue. Then, she tapped her
comm badge and called for her nurse to come back. Daisy demanded.
"Report!"
"There's been an intracerebral hemorrhage. His I.C.P is getting dangerously
high. I have to prep him for surgery." Dr. Poe replied calmly.
"I couldn't leave him there to die, Daisy..." Kate sighed.
Daisy sighed. "Of course not. But they will notice he's missing."
Kate squirmed awkwardly. "Well, they know already."
Recognizing the guilty look on Kate's face, Daisy grabbed her
arm. "What did you do? Where are the others?"
Kate argued, pulling her arm out of Daisy's grasp. "I did what you
would havedone if you'd been there...."
Thomas groaned and replied sarcastically "Oh, god - that can't
be good."
"Oh, you're a real comedian." Daisy scolded the science officer
before punching him lightly in the shoulder. "I think I liked it better
when you were depressed." Thomas managed a weak smile, but
his eyes never left the boy as Dr. Poe and the nurse
moved him into surgery.
Having to see that poor child suffer, it turned his stomach and made
him grimly determined the next thing he'd see with his new eyes would
be an end to this. Whatever it took, they were going to make sure no
more children would be damaged.
Before Daisy could get an answer from Kate, the comm system beeped.
[[ "Commander, it's time to leave for ANDARA. The Prime Minister is
expecting you." ]]
Daisy sighed. "Acknowledged."
Then, she gave Thomas and Kate both a look of warning. "I have to go.
Both of you, get back to the surface while Dr. Poe works on the boy.
Find a way to fix whatever is affecting these children..now!"
Then, she left sickbay, tapping her comm badge.
"Mr. St. George, meet me at the Transporter room."
[[ "I"ll be right there." ]]

NRPG:
Justin - Ran said you disappeared after I left - so I figured something came up with you
and Ran helped me finish this.
Ran - thanks for your help!~
Shawn, you did sort of challenge me in one of our recent NRPG conversations
to surprise you. :) I hope you enjoy this.
Anyone want to fill in the blanks about what's happening with the away team?
