“Black Out”
(Continued from “Minzinite Mining Camp #42 - part one”)
Location: USS CHANTICO
Scene: Science Lab
Stardate: [2.8]0317.0051
It had taken longer than he had hoped but Thomas, with the help of engineering, finally had pieced together a unit that would emit the duonetic field that was suggested. Leaning back against the bulk head of the small science lab aboard the CHANTICO, his mind slowly wandered through thoughts, of the mission and its complexity. Closing his eyes he couldn’t help but feel something tugging at the very logical thoughts of his scientist brain before he realized what it was.
Sitting up sharply he almost shouted to the computer in frustration, “Computer, based on the size of the device and the field it will generate calculate the number of devices needed to encompass the planet Andara in a duonetic field.”
[[Processing]]
Standing up he began to pace back and forth across the small floor space causing the small staff there to watch him intently, as they knew full and well what he was not wanting to hear.
[[Using current specifications, it would take approximately three hundred forty one thousand six hundred and ten duonetic devices to encompass Andara.]]
In an almost thunderous exhale of frustration Thomas threw his hands in the air, “great!”
“Something wrong chiefy,” was all that Thomas needed to hear before turning around to see a rather flirtatious medical officer that had been trying her best to get to know Thomas ever since he and the others came aboard the Chantico.
“Now isn’t the best time Lieutenant, please leave the science lab,” he asked nicely sitting back down on his stool.
Walking over the woman began to rub his shoulders before trailing a finger down his back, “you know you would feel better if you let these out to breath.”
Thomas turned his head slowly narrowing his eyes before almost emitting a irritated growl, “I am neither sick, nor am I in need of a doctor. I do believe that you are on duty right now and should be in sick bay so I suggest you report back to the officer on duty before you are reported for dereliction of duty, is that understood?”
The woman’s face changed quickly as it always did to frustration before she turned and stormed off, not leaving before turning and looking at Thomas once more before throwing her head back and entering the corridor.
Sighing to himself Thomas rubbed his temples before one of his science officers approached him and spoke softly, “sir?”
“Yes, Ms. Miller,” he said not opening his eyes or lifting his head, which was now leaning downwards.
“Scans of Andara do show that is has several communications satellites in orbit around the planet,” she said softly placing a padd down on the table before moving away.
Reaching out slowly Thomas took the padd in hand reading over the information slowly. Everyone watched him intently and almost sighed when a smile began to grow over his face, “Ms. Miller, you’re a genius!”
The young Ensign smiled and looked around at the others who were just happy that the tension in the air had subsided and they could once again work in peace.
Moving to a console Thomas quickly entered some information before nodding, “computer, calculate how many devices would need to be created and altered, based on current specifications to use Andara’s fifteen communication satellites to produce a planet wide duonetic field.”
[[Based on current design specifications a total of seventy-five duonetic devices would be required]]
Quickly adjusting a simulation he had in the computer to add in the duonetic devices and the satellites they were attached to he waited watching the readings. True the computer was correct that the number of devices, that thanks to the satellites, that would cover the planet was seventy-five; however, there was a small problem.

“There is a problem though,” Thomas said slowly pacing in the small open space between the desk and the door.
Handing a padd to Commander Kor, Cricton nodded, “the field would have three week spots that at regular intervals would not be sufficiently covered to do any good.”
Looking up and sitting back slowly Eishnala nodded, “is there a way to extend the fields generated by the satellites?”
“Unfortunately no, but I do have a theory,” Thomas said looking out the window in the room.
Turning slightly Eishnala nodded, “Go on.”
Backing up and looking both of them directly in the eye Thomas breathed in, “if we could place one device in the three weak spots it would cause a complete field.”
“Leaving those that place it almost certainly stranded and in harms way on the planet surface,” Cricton chimed in.
Thomas nodded softly, “exactly.”
“Any luck on locating the signal,” the commander asked looking to Cricton.
“Yes, with the help of science and some sensor adjustments, we’ve pinpointed it in a highly populated area of Andara. Unfortunatly, we aren’t able to get a exact location within the city and based on the signals changes the only way to ensure that anything we do stays that way and the signal does no harm is to send someone in and destroy it once its been deactivated by the duonetic field,” he replied quickly.
“Then that settles it, we have no choice but to use the planets on satellites against them and generate the fields,” Eishnala said standing up.
“One word of advice Commander, the satellites are made to aim their emitions downward, but fields even extended and stretched ones tend to emit in all directions,” Thomas said stopping at the door.
Nodding Eshinala walked on, “then we’ll need to make sure to keep the ship away from the satellites once the field is remotely activated. Mr. Varn, Mr. Cricton get it done.”
Nodding both men separated from the commander and headed towards engineering and the science labs where their teams had already begun construction of the devices.
Scene: Bridge
“Report,” Commander Kor stated as she entered the bridge and moved to the center chair.
“We are still cloaked on route to Andara,” the helm officer stated making sure the ship stayed on course.
“We may not have much time once we enter the system, I hope that these teams can deploy and attach the devices quickly,” Eishnala said to herself.
Scene: Science Labs à Transporter Room
Time Index: Two Hours Later
The combined forces of both the science and engineering staff had completed their work creating the devices and had already begun fitting them to the satellites one by one. Much to the CHANTICO’s crew’s surprise, there seemed to be indication that any dominion forces were coming to fortify the location, yet. Banking on the hope that the Dominion would expect Daisy’s crew to come flying to her rescue Eshinala and the others continued on knowing full and well if they didn’t finished the original mission because they were trying and both she and Drake, Daisy would personally kill them, bring them back to life and kill them again later.
[[Bridge to Lieutenant Varn, satellites twelve and thirteen are almost finished.]]
Tapping his combadge Thomas nodded, “good, I’ll begin preparing the ground teams for deployment.”
[[Very well Mr. Varn, once the last two satellites are complete we will begin transport and away your signal for activation, Kor out]]
Thomas looked up at the combined teams of engineers and scientists before shaking his head. Each team had their assignments and Thomas knew his very well, as he would be going planet side to plant one of the devices himself. The way he had explained it to the others was that he would be near the city they were going to and could easily get there after making sure the device was in place.
[[Bridge, to Mr. Varn we have completed the last two satellites and are moving into position to transport the first deployment teams.]]
“Everyone report to the transporter room with your device, and make sure that you do not activate the device before you are instructed to. Once the devices are activated you are to move into hiding anywhere you can find. Try to hide any indication of Starfleet, but keep your combadges with you for when the fields are taken offline, understood?” Thomas asked the group.
As the group nodded or stated a yes sir Thomas breathed deep before shaking the clothing that had been replicated to help the officers blend in.
As one by one the teams disappeared in the familiar beam of blue light Thomas waited. Finally the time had come for his team to go, and he still waited. Watching as two officers disappeared he lifted the device with the other officer onto the platform before giving the go ahead and disappearing as well.
Location: ANDARA
Scene: Outskirts of forest near open field
Materializing near an open field gave Thomas an uneasy feeling. Using the tools that were brought with them the group slowly began to dig a hole large enough to encompass the device to ensure that it was hidden well.
[[Team one reporting in device in place and awaiting signal]]
“Sir, why couldn’t we just remotely activate the devices?” one of the science personnel asked as he dug.
“I didn’t want to risk anything happening and having to send someone down here after the Dominion got wind that something was going on. This way once the devices are activated, we wont just have strangers appearing, from alley ways like we were transported, but we will walk in from the outskirts hopefully convincing anyone that we are just traders that went for a walk and are totally oblivious to the situation.” Thomas replied as he continued to dig.
[[Team two reporting in, device in place and awaiting signal.]]
Putting his shovel down Thomas and the others lifted the device into the hole, “Once its activated we’ll need to cover it with leaves and branches as best we can.”
Tapping his combadge Thomas breathed heavy, “Varn to CHANTICO, and teams one and two, we are ready down here. Activate the field.”

[[Varn to CHANTICO, and teams one and two, we are ready down here. Activate the field.]]
“Activate the duonetice devices on the satellites,” Commander Kor ordered.
As the signal was given and the satellites were activated the field began to expand and grow the way Thomas and Cricton had designed it to. Within moments the entire planet was covered and the weak spots disappeared with the reinforcement of the three other devices.
Location: Andara
Scene: Large City
Having accepted more of the technological role those that lived in the city noticed when all their small technology suddenly stopped working, but they especially noticed when teams of Jem’hadar began decloaking through out the city itself.
Scene: Team Three Landing Site
The wind blew quickly through the still and quite field entering in to the curvy pathways caused by the forest. As ANDARA’s form of dirt devils began to lift leaves into the air the sound of nothing was heard. There where theam three had been no one remained as if no one was ever there to begin with.
NRPG: Sorry it took me so long to get this out, jut got caught up with work.
Shawn: Sorry I didn’t answer your e-mail back, I hope this is ok.
If I got anyone’s personality wrong please let me know and I hope you enjoy this. To answer a question real quick, no Thomas’ team didn’t get taken, he just ordered the teams to “disappear” once they activated the devices and that’s what they did. They would have headed for the nearest city or village to try and hide or act like visiting traders, and yes the city that Thomas would go for was the city I stated the signal was coming from.
HOPE THIS HELPS!!!
