Again, Drake was back doing the mind-numbing work of extracting
Minzinite ore. Copies of himself occupied multiple work areas doing
exactly the same thing. Sometimes, they would bump into each other
and make a joke about being the best looking guys in the shaft and
how Lara would be amused by how much he enjoyed his own
company.
It had been surreal watching Daisy, her clone and the Vorta have a
clinical clinical discussion about the potential value in having multiple
workers of atleast alf El-Aurian DNA. Externally, the El-Aurians are
physically identical to Humans, in structure and even the range of racia
l phenotypes. The only significant physical difference between Humans
and El-Aurians is in the aging process, as the extremely long-lived
El-Aurian lifespan covers many centuries. Daisy knew Desai would
appreciate that and having the Vorta see value in Drake would help
keep him alive.
Drake held up well under the physical demands of life in the labor camp.
He said all the right words while joining the other workers at prayers so he
would get a decent share of food. By doing that, he was managing to keep
up his strengths. His dreams were filled with memories of Lara and their son
- as well as memories of long bubble baths, mani-pedi's, facials and the
occasional deep-tissue massage and other types of pampering he enjoyed at
GATEWAY'S "Color-me-happy" Spa.
Deep underground, it was easy to lose track of time. His aching back and the
growling of his stomach were usually the best indicators of how many hours
had passed.
He was just musing to himself about his next meal and the Rakhari named Yoden
who had insisted on taking a turn cooking. Yoden always burned the meat and
Drake was hoping to get a chance to assist with the food preparation. Then, it
happened.
BOOM
The ground and the walls trembled. Pieces of the ceiling crumbled and he
feared the tunnel itself would collapse on top of him.
An alarm sounded and one of the Jem Hadar ordered them back to the
surface. They scurried like frightened animals and even Drake had to
admit the constant rain of this world felt good on his face as they toppled
out of the mine.
It was then he saw the flames and he finally knew what had exploded.
The medical compound was a burning pile of rubble.
Whatever accelerant had been used, the flames raged against the pouring
rain. His heart swelled in his throat and he went running with the Jem Hadar
towards the compound to see if there were any survivors.
One thought ran through his mind as he dug through piles of twisted metal,
jagged piles of rock and stone looking for bodies.
** "My gods, Daisy....what have you done?!" **

NRPG:
Still waiting on test results. Not making any big definate plans on anything until I've verified that I won't be having to start treatment for Hep C. Still, I wanted to put in an appearance. This seemed appropriate for Daisy - somewhere in all that burning rubble and the question of whether or not she survived not being answered. Art imitates life. This whole thing blew up all around me and I'm sitting here stuck in the rubble waiting to see if I'm going to be ok, too.
My fingers are crossed I'll be getting a phone call on Monday.
