Perspiration and rainwater dripped into his eyes as he worked.
Things were getting blurry as he worked. His hands moved
quickly as the half El-Aurian utilized his sense of touch to help
finish the circuitry recalibration.
On his knees in the mud for what seemed like hours,
he finally saw it happen. His canibalized medical equipment
came to life. The screen lit up and he could make out the outline
of Nanite readings.
"Come on, come on....that's it." Drake whispered nervously.
A voice behind him boomed, "What are you doing?"
Drake nearly jumped out of his skin as he found himself facing
a Jem Hadar. He jumped to his feet and the guard aimed his
weapon. Blinking, he staggered backwards.
"I'm trying to save her."
"The female is obviously dead. Get back to work and let
the canines have her."
"No, sir." Drake replied calmly.
The Jem Hadar struck Drake in the face with the butt of his
phaser rifle. Seeing only stars at that point, the half El-Aurian
dropped to his knees next to Daisy's body. He felt her arm.
It was still cold.
Anxiously, he pulled her close and lifted her upper body
towards him. He held onto her and begged the guard,
"She's not dead. I promise you, I can save her."
The guard got a closer look at Daisy's face as the half
El-Aurian positioned her body in his arms. Her rigor mortis
was softening - indicating that something internally had
changed. Finally, it was in that moment, the Jem Hadar
saw visible nanite activity.
In a sickening race against the decomposition, they moved
through her otherwise lifeless body. Grey lines stood
out against her skin. The lines moved through out her body
as they used what had been her bloodstream to reach all
the necrotic tissue. It looked as though she was being
assimilated.
The Jem Hadar charged his weapon and demanded of
Drake,
"Step away from her."
Drake gave him a pleading look. He made a motion
with his weapon and gave him one last look of warning.
With a sigh, Drake gently lowered Daisy's head to the
ground and pulled himself to a standing position. He
listened helplessly as the Jem Hadar used his Comm to
contact the Vorta adminstrator of the camp.
The Half El-Aurian rubbed his eyes and glanced down
at Daisy's body. Through the rain, he saw the lines of
Nanites along her face, her throat and her hands.
He sighed anxiously - wishing she would open her eyes.
He nearly jumped out of his skin and gasped when
Daisy's body was suddenly engulfed in a transporter
beam and whisked away from him.
"What?! NO!" he begged the guard. "Where did
they take her?"
The guard ignored his question.
"Go back to your cell."

Three Vorta scientists approached the cold metalic
slab that passed for a biobed and began studying what was
happening to Daisy's body.
They muttered between themselves holding various medical
instruments over her until a Founder approached them. All
three of them bowed their heads to their god as he asked
what was going on.
The Dominion had dismissed Borg Technology as a plaything
for solids. This desperate attempt to save Daisy's life showed
them it could do something impressive and was, perhaps, worth
studying further.

Exhaustion and worry took their toll on him. The Half El-Aurian
sighed and stretched in what passed for a "Bed" in this place.
A meal was being prepared in the distance, he could smell
the meat cooking. Though he knew he should eat, though he
knew he needed to keep up his strength, Drake was just
too tired.
Lonesome for his family and his friends, worried about
Daisy and imagining what her children were going through,
he choked up with emotion. Struggling to hold it together, he
just wanted to go home.
Aching for the comfort of Lara's arms around him, desperate
to hear the sound of his son laughing and calling out for his
Daddy, Drake finally broke down into tears and cried himself
to sleep.

*Ba-Bump*
It crashed through her soul like thunder booming across
the sky. For that terrible split second, all the light and
warmth that had enveloped her went dark.
She felt pain. She felt terrible, terrible pain.
Then, it was gone.
Again, the light was warm. She felt safe and at peace.
Then, it happened again.
*Ba-Bump*
Gradually, slowly, her heart was beating again.
She didn't like it at all.
The first thought that formed at the core of her being was
simply, "No....."
She didn't want it. She didn't want to feel pain again.
*Ba-Bump*
The elder of the three Vorta gave an almost perverse
smile as Daisy's lips parted and the once dead woman
started some weak, labored breathing.
"She's comatose" the younger Vorta almost whined - as
if she'd hoped to see Daisy suddenly open her eyes and
hop down from the biobed - instantly returned to full health.
"Yes, but improving" the elder smirked.
They didn't feel it - but Daisy's soul was in the room with
them at that point.
Ripped away from the warmth and the comfort of what she
could only conclude was Heaven, she cowered in the corner.
They couldn't hear her screaming. They couldn't hear her begging
them to just let her go, to just let it all be over and they remained
oblivious to her horror as she saw her own body - riddled with
Borg Nanites.
Horrified and exhausted, she went to grab a medical instrument.
A disembodied spirit, there was nothing she could do.
She sobbed. "I don't want this, I don't want this. Why is this
happening to me?! Why?!"
Finally, someone heard her crying.
Months ago, he'd stood before the ferry to the afterlife and
promised the boatman he would give guidance to the dead. The
distance between GATEWAYstation and this planet stood for
nothing against the gravity of that promise.
Only Daisy saw Gene walk in. He recognized her as part of
GATEWAY now and made his way to her side.
He knelt down and pulled her into a hug.

NRPG:
OK, - short and character-centered - I know. But, I'm having a little trouble getting back into a posting routine.
I know we were supposed to end this mission a couple weeks ago. Shawn - you never
told me what you had in mind for the ending. If you'd like to go ahead with that, please
do.
Ken - TAG!! I hope you don't mind the encounter between Gene and Daisy.
I'd write more - but my husband was up all night doing homework for his MBA class
and you'd be amazed how much of a mess one grown man can make in my livingroom.
*Mutters*
Anyway - Daisy's on a ship in orbit and Drake is on the surface. Anytime you guys
want to be done with ANDARA and come and get us - you go right ahead. :P I'm in
no hurry.
Peter - I'd have kept Drake and Daisy together - but you're so busy torturing
yourself over that report for school and you've got the STONEHENGE - I don't
expect you to write right now. I hope I'll get lucky with Ken. *Snigger*
