TI: Morning
Another day of running the station and dealing with its myriad of issues made Anaqueen Spankryz pause for a moment to enjoy the morning tranquility before starting her duty shift. The last few weeks had been quite challenging for the Trill, leaving her with hardly any free time except for six to eight hours of sleep each night. She had dealt with a variety of problems during her temporary command ranging from a barrage of civilian complaints, shenanigans of the press, casualties brought by the fleet from the ongoing war etc.
Ana was a workaholic who ended up working overtime on most days anyway but commanding the GATEWAY had kept the Captain past the end of her duty shift everyday. So it was of no surprise to anyone including her patient husband that she had hardly much room for free time to enjoy the pleasures of the station as limited as they were in the present situation. Some officers who served with the couple believed Ana was a lucky woman to be married to a very understanding man like Lt. Cmdr. Matthew Haley, considering her infamous temper. But little did they realize that opposites tended to attract. Matthew was generally a calm and patient person who rarely got angry.
The Trill sighed, leaning against the door and thinking of the busy day ahead. It was early in the morning, a time that suited her perfectly, much to the chagrin of many of her co-workers and subordinates. She was also usually in a better mood during the earlier part of the day. Pushing away from the door, the Captain straightened herself and was getting ready to leave, when her husband appeared out of the bedroom.
“You weren’t just thinking of sneaking off like that,” Matthew chided playfully, yawning. Apparently the COMMENDATION’s security chief had just woken up.
Ana shook her head and grinned. “You looked so peaceful in your sleep. I didn’t want to disturb you.”
“I’m a light sleeper, remember,” Haley reminded, chuckling as he approached her. “Anyway I couldn’t just let you leave without telling you my plans for today.”
Ana nodded, suddenly remembering something. “You have the day off.”
“Glad you remember,” the half-El Aurian stated with a smile. “Yes, according to Commander G’blok, I’ve been rewarded with 24 hrs shore leave for all my hard work.” Sporting a look of disappointment, he said “Though I wish you had a day off too.”
The Trill sighed, not pleased with the lack of time spent with her husband. “Unfortunately my job here at the station doesn’t exactly leave room for free time.”
“How much longer will you be running the place?” Matthew questioned.
“Till Daisy recovers and is fit to return to duty.”
Haley muttered, grinning weakly. “Well let’s hope that day comes soon.”
“I hope so,” the Trill agreed as the couple became locked in a quick embrace. “Frankly, I can’t wait to get back to the COMMENDATION and take off.” She let go of him. “Anyway, I should be done at 1800 hrs. So I will see you then.”
Matthew warned good-naturedly. “You better because I have made some plans for this special occasion.”
“Special occasion?” Ana blinked, feeling confused.
“You really don’t remember?” The El Aurian hybrid shook his head, giving out a dry chuckle. “Hello, it’s your birthday,” he reminded, sounding excited.
Realization struck the Trill woman’s mind. “Right, I must have been so busy that I totally forgot about today,” she said, grinning sheepishly.
Matthew bowed gently and laughed. “Glad I could be of assistance.”
“I just realized you also make a good personal assistant in addition to being my security chief,” Anaqueen remarked in jest. The Trill left the quarters after assuring Matthew she would meet after 1800 hrs, though he was not holding his breath.

Scene: CO’s office
TI: Later in the Afternoon
Shakespeare once said the sweetest honey was loathsome in its own deliciousness. What Daisy could remember of her "afterlife" experience could be described in the same way - loathsome in it's own deliciousness - or so painfully wonderful that she hated to think about it, hated to remember it. As was to be expected, psychological counseling was considered a part of her recovery and the mostly human woman scrambled to avoid talking about what she'd experienced.
Every excuse to be outside of the counseling office and away from the concerned looks from Mowree was welcome. That included pestering Ana for pre-transition briefings before the change-over in command.
Stronger now, Daisy was easily able to jog back and forth between her quarters and the CO's office. Unfortunately for Ana, Daisy did so quite frequently. To put it bluntly, the Trill was beginning to find it annoying.
"You do know most people bathe after physical therapy." Ana chided her.
Daisy looked down at herself and only just then noticed the perspiration stains in her cleavage and under her arms. Lightly, she tugged at the fabric of her t-shirt and gave it a little shake.
"Right, sorry. I was just remembering that beta shift change you made and I wanted to ask you about it before I forgot." Daisy stammered awkwardly.
"We discussed that yesterday,” Ana replied, struggling to be patient.
Then, the doorchime rang and Daisy quickly ducked behind the desk next to Ana's legs. The Trill openly scoffed, “For crying out loud, Commander Davidson."
Daisy rolled her eyes and groaned. "Just cover for me, ok? I need a break from sickbay and the tests and the therapy sessions... if it's someone looking for me, just make them go away."
The chime rang again.
Daisy ducked down and gave Anaqueen a pleading look. Then, she groaned. Ana sighed. "Stop whining. Honestly, sometimes you are ridiculous."
Finally, Ana called out "Enter"
It was Cade Foster who walked in. "Hey, I was just looking for...."
Before he could finish that sentence, he heard a little thud from beneath her desk. Daisy muttered, “Ow" and then followed that with some cursing as she came out from beneath what was still Ana's desk. Foster's eyes widened and then he quickly smirked, "If I'm interrupting something, please continue and let me watch."
"This is still my ready room - at least for the time being." Ana snapped. "And I'm telling you both - OUT! Now!"
Daisy rolled her eyes. "For all his perverted talk - he's only going to drag me back for more time on the treadmill and more annoying counseling sessions with Mowree..."
The Trill stood up and threw her hands in the air. "Stop whining, Daisy. I honestly don't care. Just get out of here."
Foster waggled his eyebrows and quickly assured Daisy. "Honestly, after seeing you under the spotted hottie's desk, the last thing I have in mind for you is time on the treadmill."
Ana blinked. "What did he just call me?"
Daisy blinked and looked nervously back and forth between them. Then, she grabbed Cade's arm and assured the fuming Trill, "Ok, we'll be going now."
After the duo left, Ana sat back down on the chair and sighed in frustration. “Honestly, those two can be too much…” She peeked at the chronometer and realized it was three hours till her duty shift ended. The Trill couldn’t wait to see what Matthew had planned for their evening together.

TI: 1800 hrs
Anaqueen smiled to herself over having managed to leave work on time and finally the chance to spend a quiet evening with Matthew. She did have a busy day but luckily the Trill didn’t have to deal with any serious crisis that would have forced her to work overtime. It had been a while since Ana had spent a considerable amount of time with her husband and she was looking forward to their plans that night. The couple barely had even few minutes of breakfast together during her temporary command of the GATEWAY. An uninterrupted evening was what she and Matthew needed.
[[MacNeil to Captain Spankryz,]] Kate’s voice sprang through the Trill’s comm. badge.
Ana frowned, getting a very bad feeling about the call. “Spankryz here. Go ahead, Commander.”
The half-Nuimon informed, her voice filled with immense annoyance. [[I’ve been arguing with a Tellarite trade ship Captain for an hour and now he insists on speaking to you.]]
“Regarding what?”
The auburn haired woman sighed out of exasperation. [[It’s rather…trivial, ma’am.]]
Ana began fuming as she slowly questioned. “How trivial?”
[[He’s upset we…]] Kate went on explaining the situation in a nervous voice. Considering the Tellarites’ fondness for arguing, the Scot was pretty much worn out and preferred to end the matter quickly.
“Alright, Commander. I’ll come right there and speak to him,” Spankryz informed tersely after the Ops officer finished. She glanced at the chronometer and sighed heavily. Matthew was going to wait for another few minutes, hopefully.

“Captain, I don’t know how you pulled that off,” Kate commented, heaving out a sigh filled with relief. “You were just amazing.”
Anaqueen wasn’t fazed by the Scottish woman’s compliment. Arguing with a Tellarite was hard work even for the feisty Trill with a penchant for losing her temper. Frankly, the matter was way too silly, which infuriated the Captain even more and Ana refused to put up with the tradeship Captain’s nonsense. Oh she had tried to reason with him at first and fifteen minutes later, the Tellarite still continued to rant. It was at that moment Ana lost her patience and took the last five minutes to tell off the man, thereby managing to get him to agree with her terms. It was no easy feat and the Tellarite only grudgingly concurred with the Trill. “It was no big deal,” she simply said, looking unimpressed.
“It doesn’t look like he’ll complain, will he?” MacNeil questioned, looking doubtful.
“I don’t think so,” Spankryz confidently declared. “Anyway, I better head out. Will everything be okay here?”
Kate nodded with a smile. “Oh yes, we will be fine here. You have nothing to worry, Captain.”
“Good.” Ana stated, sounding satisfied and quickly left the scene. As the Trill reached the upper tier, Eishnala called out to her, causing the Captain to groan inwardly.
“Captain,” the Andorian announced. “We have a slight problem.”
Ana inquired trying to not show the irritation in her voice. “What kind of problem?”
Kor explained calmly. “The Director of the GATEWAY FedCom facilities is waiting in the conference room, demanding to speak to you on the matter regarding the reporter who assaulted Dr. Poe.”
“Right now?” The Trill queried, annoyance filling her blue eyes. **Just what I need, a meeting with FedCom personnel.**
“Yes ma’am,” Eishnala nodded looking solemn. “I offered to deal with the situation myself since you are off-duty but he insisted on speaking to you only.”
Ana sighed, having resigned to delaying her evening with Matthew yet again. “Understood, Commander. I will go deal with him right now.”
--------------------
Scene: Outside the Conference room
TI: 1930 hrs
Ana massaged her temples feeling a headache creeping up. For close to an hour, the Trill had to fend off ridiculous accusations from the GS-2 FedCom facilities director and his lawyer regarding the ‘mistreatment’ (in their own imagination) of the reporter named Morris who was currently placed under arrest for spitting on Grace Poe.
They complained over the ‘deliberate attack’ against Morris, which was really LJ’s prank and demanded to know the identity of the culprit. Ana responded by claiming for the umpteenth time the GATEWAY staff had nothing to do with the prank and did not tolerate vigilantism. When the lawyer whined over the station not arresting the prankster, the Trill curtly replied the individual was a minor and that the matter was dealt with accordingly. And so the heated exchange went back and forth for close to an hour until it ended with Ana warning them off spreading any more lies regarding Lt. Varn and other senior staff members. The director hit back at her by using the words, freedom, speech and press.
Ana checked the chronometer and sighed heavily. She was already an hour and a half late for her rendezvous with Matthew. Well that wasn’t too bad and there was still enough time to enjoy the rest of the evening…at least that’s what she thought until something else came up.
--------------------------
Scene: Outside Spankryz’s temporary quarters
TI: 2200 hrs
Ana leaned back on the wall next to the door leading to her quarters and closed her eyes. Guilt enveloped her as she hesitated to enter her temporary abode for a minute, thinking of the disappointment on Matthew’s face. She did contact her husband to let him know about coming home late. The Trill rued over ruining his wonderful plans. Her heartbeat leapt up as the doors slid open. Stepping away from the wall, she watched her beloved walk outside. Instead of the discontent she was expecting, the half-El Aurian wore a smile.
“Glad you finally made it,” the blond man commented, chuckling.
The Trill began to quickly explain. “I was called away for one problem after another with everyone insisting it had to me who should solve them all. In the last two hours, I was busy dealing with a crisis where two civilian vessels crashed into each other as they were racing to see who would dock first.” She gave out a heavy sigh filled with frustration.
Matthew pulled her into his arms, assuring the Trill gently. “It’s alright, Ana.” The couple remained silent for a minute before the half-El Aurian stated calmly. “Well, it’s part of your job and frankly I’ve learnt to accept it because I love you so much.” They released each other.
Ana inquired, sounding concerned. “It’s very late. What would you like to do?”
“I already have a takeout dinner from Four Corners waiting inside,” her husband began smiling as he held her hand. “Once we finish our late dinner, we can take a quiet walk in the promenade and then to the arboretum.”
The Trill nodded. “Sounds like a plan.” The couple then went inside their quarters.
Matthew quipped, teasing her. “But first you need to change from your uniform to the lovely dress I got for you.”
