“Story of Mirror Ana and Mirror Kate”
   (contd from Taylor’s ‘126’)

  Location: BFOV SHIV
  SD: 2.80517.1350
  Scene: Flight Deck

In all honesty, Anaqueen was bored, waiting at the helm while the SHIV skulked in the far reaches of the Andaran system. Ana had only been a member of the crew for a few months. She was restless, counting the days till the opportunity arose to reunite with the few remaining members of ‘Free Trill’ and return home to continue fighting against the symbionts’ oppression. Sadly that day still seemed far away.

The ‘Free Trill’ group comprised of unjoined Trills, whose goal was destroying all symbionts and free the humanoids. Even though the rebels were losing the war with the symbionts, they were not ready to surrender and from what Ana last heard, the group was still working on recruiting new members to their cause.

The symbionts in that particular alternate reality were parasitic creatures who subjugated their hosts completely. Once the symbiont was placed inside the host, the latter lost their ability for independent thought and became a slave. In that universe, the symbionts were found in abundance, thereby allowing nearly 99.5 % of the adult population to be joined. Millions of symbionts were born every year in the Mak’ala breeding facilities built amidst a series of interconnecting underground caves.

The origins of the unjoined rebel group was unclear, though rumors persisted it was started by a group of fifteen to eighteen year old humanoid Trills around two decades ago. Joining with the symbiont happened when the humanoid host turned 21. Children lived with their parents till the age of 16 and then taken away to secure compounds stationed all over the planet and its colonies, where they remained until the day of joining. The purpose of placing 16-21 year olds in those compounds was to prepare the potential hosts for joining. But in reality, it was a tactic used by the government to prevent the adolescent Trills from rebelling.

Wanted for murdering a member of the ‘Aristocracy’, a symbiont named Pentaur, two years ago, Anaqueen had since been on the run, traveling all over the quadrant until she came across a ‘mysterious’ Vulcan agent, who directed her to the SHIV. The Aristocracy comprised of 100 symbionts that made up the ruling class and were addressed as lords by the rest of the population. Those symbionts were considered elite and no one knew exactly why though a widespread rumor indicated they were several hundreds of years old. The aristocracy was in turn governed by a single queen, whom many believed to be the oldest living symbiont on the planet.

Years ago, Ana was chosen to join the ‘Aristocracy’, a rare honor bestowed upon only humanoids deemed highly suitable by the ruling class. She was already daughter of the host carrying one of the elite symbionts and spent her entire childhood amongst the nobility. She was set to join with the infamous aristocrat, ‘Spankryz’.

During Ana’s years at the Hallgor compound, something just never sat right with her regarding the whole thing. She was a strong willed person who loved her independence too much and was aware joining would cause her to lose all that freedom. However joining with an elite symbiont would have brought her massive power, especially Spankryz, which was considered one of the most ruthless and powerful aristocrats on TRILL. But Ana realized as a host she would be completely non-existent and it would be Spankryz controlling everything. So when the day of joining came, Anaqueen attempted to bolt from the ceremony but was unsuccessful and thus imprisoned by the authorities. A year later, she escaped with the help of Free Trill members and became part of the rebellion.

Murderers of Aristocracy members were punished by sentencing them to death. Ana knew returning home would mean her death but that wasn’t going to thwart the young woman. Besides she was 32 years old, way past the ideal age range for joining and would be dead anyway if a symbiont was placed inside her. She never regretted the deed not even for a microsecond and believed killing Pentaur was a just cause even if the poor innocent host had to die. She would do it all over again, if given the chance.

She glanced behind at Captain Daisy Byrne and narrowed her eyes. There was no deep affection between the Captain and the helmsman despite enjoying the pleasures of their ‘off-duty’ relationship. Though as far as the Trill was concerned, she abhorred using sexual overtures to achieve her goals.

The Trill watched the Captain approach her with a smirk plastered on her lips. “My quarters in two hours,” she demanded sweetly, running a finger down the other woman’s forehead, where her spots lay.

Ana nodded, returning a fake smile. “Of course, Captain.”

“Remember, don’t be late,” Byrne warned as she walked away, leaving the Trill to immerse into her thoughts again.

  Scene: Medical Laboratory

Physician Kathryn MacNeil grinned wickedly, eyeing the results of her latest experiment. The Human/Nuimon hybrid was an expert in genetics. Dr. MacNeil was considered to be a person with exceptionally high intelligence and her contributions to the medical field was greatly exploited by the Terran Empire. She had led numerous research projects ordered by the empire’s military. Now with a soaring reputation like hers, one would wonder why Kate was a doctor on a pirate vessel.

Six months ago, MacNeil’s competitor who was jealous of her achievements had made plans to assassinate the hybrid. His plan involved hiring a group of mercenaries whose mission was breaking into the laboratory and killing everyone on sight. Then after the job was done, the place had to be destroyed leaving no traces of evidence behind and make it look like terrorists were behind the crime. The plan would have fully succeeded if it wasn’t for one tiny problem.

When Kate received a warning from an unknown source regarding the assassination attempt, she quickly devised a plan using one of her live subjects as decoy. The decoy was placed in her office and a holographic projector was set up there to project an image of her to cover the subject. By the time the assassins discovered they didn’t kill the actual target, the Scot was long gone from TERRA along with all the files pertaining to her work. Soon after that, she had run into Captain Daisy Byrne and thus ended up on the SHIV as her physician.

While MacNeil was a brilliant geneticist, she was also very eccentric and cruel. To her the end justified the means, no matter the cost. She cared nothing for ethics. Then again the empire itself never had something akin to a prime directive. Her subjects comprised of mostly species whose worlds were conquered by the Terran Empire. Kate was involved in experiments so brutal and immoral it would make eyes bleed. Anyone with a sense of morality would be mortified at the methods Dr. MacNeil used to obtain her results.

The Nuimon hybrid never felt she did anything wrong and enjoyed her work immensely. In the name of research, Kate had subjected her victims to various kinds of torture, which she believed to be necessary methods for the experiments and was insensitive about their pain. Currently she was working on creating a pathogen for bio-warfare that was programmed to be DNA-specific. But she was missing subjects and cursed the Bajoran for not bringing back one live person from the INSHALLAH.

“Well, I hear from Captain Byrne there is a gigantic space station nearby,” Kate said giggling, inclining her head downwards. Her black eyes changed to a gleaming blue. Stroking a furry head, the hybrid cooed gleefully. “A big station like that would be ripe with so many subjects for my experiments. Isn’t that right, William Wallace?” She chuckled, when watching a big animal, resembling a wolf or sled dog, wagging his tail.

William Wallace had creamy white fur and placed his head on the Scot’s lap, whining. The animal was loyal to only his mistress and was extremely overprotective of her. Kate trained William Wallace to be hostile to everyone, except for those whom she deemed acceptable enough for her. Most steered clear from the animal. William Wallace underwent numerous genetic engineering experiments conducted by the half-Nuimon.

Her laboratory was filled with all kinds of little pets, all of which were created using genetic engineering methods. Many of the creations were failures. She played around with crossing the genes of different types of species like for example a Terran rabbit and a Klingon targ or a Terran chimpanzee and an Andorian boar as a hobby.

The dog or wolf depending on what one wanted to call it lifted his head up and howled in excitement. “Hmm…must be Thomas Varn,” Kate chuckled, petting the animal.

NRPG: Just adding a little background for both my mirror characters as well as a little bit on mirror universe Trills :) William Wallace is Kate’s dog, in case anyone didn’t know. In our universe, he is a little beagle who is very friendly in general to others. But in this mirror universe, William Wallace is big and quite scary.
