“Differences and Instincts”
(contd from Leigh's 'The Arrival')
Location: GS-2
SD: 2.90519.2006
Scene: Sickbay
Makinis Ugeen and Commander Gene McInnis were somewhat different. That difference was greater than the obvious that one was alive and the other dead. Commander McInnis has been lean and muscular, this is true. His alternate, though - had an almost whipcord physique. His muscles were distinct. He was "cut" as the body builders would say. Any softness in Geen could not be tolerated. He had no excess fat; even his facial bones were clear and sharp.
Commander McInnis had short, close cut and mouse brown hair and no beard. His appearance was neat and tidy and had a "boy next door" type of softness. Makinis Ugeen, on the other hand, wore his hair longer and black - longer hair on a man being a clear indication of something more primal lying within than a "boy next door". He also had a beard - precisely trimmed and yet markedly full-bodied and touched with gray. Both men had the same basic DNA, so Geen changing his brown hair to black while choosing to keep the gray indicated vanity regarding both his virility and age that his more modest and gentle counterpart could never have possessed. Though he preferred black hair to brown - he also took pride in being able to grow a nice beard and having lived long enough for that same beard to be touched with gray.
Naturally, Geen had wounds he'd inflicted himself so that he would be drawn in with the survivors of the TUSCARORA. A man who practiced flagellation as a part of his homage to the Prophets, he valued the use of pain to reach spiritual clarity. The moans and whimpers of the wounded around him were annoying - they showed him how weak they were. The Bajoran detested them for their lack of discipline - but did his best to stay lost in the crowd while hoping to gather more information.
His eyes were drawn to the Orion. He watched her work, suddenly mesmerized.
Orion women were revered in his universe. Their pheremones were more than just relaxing and even, intoxicating. They stimulated both the healing and the pleasure centers of humanoid brains. Close contact with them didn't just make you "feel better"...it really did make you better. Orion companions were sought after and considered a great privilege.
The Bajoran paid no attention as Kathryn MacNeil entered sickbay with her pets in tow. She was planning on dropping them off with Giles but needed to check on Grace first. For reasons the half-Nuimon couldn’t quite understand, she had developed some sort of camaraderie with the Orion doctor. Their conversations went well as long as the topic was about medicine, but when it came to talking about Grace’s personal life, the aCMO just suddenly became quiet. That frustrated the Ops officer as she hoped to break Poe out of her shell one day and improve her self-esteem. Kate knew the task was difficult and was aware of the risks of placing too much pressure on the other woman.
The sickbay was currently very busy at the moment, dealing with the survivors of the USS TUSCACORA that the COMMENDATION brought. For a moment, the Scottish woman felt envious of the aCMO as she missed working in sickbay. Kate enjoyed her new job in Operations and felt overwhelmed at being given the challenge of commanding CHANTICO. The Human/Nuimon believed she was in her best element when diagnosing illnesses or performing surgeries.
She spotted Grace in the midst of calming a Ferengi patient who was flailing his arms around. William Wallace trotted behind the tall woman’s leg, unnerved about the Ferengi’s behaviour. Like Kate, the little dog had grown to like Poe and sometimes came along with his mistress, when she helped the aCMO with reports and other inventory stuff. Mary Sue bounced up and down, making an attempt to free her hand from Kate’s grip. The parrot, perched atop her shoulder, kept squawking.
Kate frowned when the patient slapped Grace’s hand and knocked the tricorder away. She decided to run interference with the Ferengi, but a black haired Bajoran beat her to it. The Scot watched with intent as the mysterious man just leapt off from his biobed and walked briskly towards Poe and her patient.
Grabbing the Ferengi’s shoulder, Makinis Ugeen pinned the short being down on the bed. The patient squealed in agony and his mouth released a variety of curse words towards Ugeen but that didn’t faze the fierce Bajoran. Makinis considered for a moment to reveal his fangs to silence the patient but didn’t so as to avoid drawing additional attention to himself. Grace quickly applied a sedative to the Ferengi and soon he fell asleep. She nodded at Geen to let him go and the latter did so slowly.
Grace murmured polite thanks and in response, Ugeen bowed a little without saying anything. When the Bajoran turned to leave, their eyes met, which sent a sudden chill down the Orion’s spine. Grace was bewildered to sense a feeling of respect coming from the Bajoran mingled with an intuitive feeling that he really wasn't at all a nice man. The contradiction spooked her.
Kate arrived at the scene, when Makinis returned back to his biobed. William Wallace clung to her leg as he eyed the Bajoran warily. The dog had also sensed Ugeen was not a nice person and made sure to stay away from him. Mary Sue freed herself from Kate’s grip and ran towards some empty biobeds. MacNeil groaned and then yelled. “Lass, get back here!” But the chimpanzee paid no heed to her mistress and just continued to hop from one biobed to another. One of the nurses waved back at the former CMO, indicating she would watch over the chimp.
MacNeil sighed, turning back to Grace and inquired sounding concerned. “Everything okay with you, Grace?”
Poe shrugged, moving away from the sleeping Ferengi with the Scot following. “Just a little problem with a patient. Luckily that Bajoran man helped fixed things for me.” The Orion shivered when thinking of Ugeen.
Noticing Grace had decided to keep her new hairstyle, Kathryn remarked, smiling. “I’m glad you kept the long hair.”
Suddenly, a young civilian woman ran past them. Distraught over the loss of her husband, she wasn't thinking clearly. She surprised one of Lt. Palandora's junior officers and actually made it out the main front door of sickbay only to bump into Lt. Cochrane Stephens.
The pilot gently took it upon himself to usher her back into sickbay, offering to get her a glass of water.
Grace sighed. "That was close.” Then, she smiled at Kate...."After you drop off your children with Giles...could you see about getting some quarters for the stable survivors?"
Kate blushed. She liked it, though - when Grace referred to her animals as her children or her babies. It showed how clearly the Orion understood her. The half-Nuimon nodded. "Of course. I'll do what I can. "
Grace gently reached up to touch the squawking parrot and then her hand lingered on Kate's shoulder. Their eyes locked and then Kate felt the eyes of Makinnis Ugeen on them. From his biobed, the Bajoran was watching them both.
Right then, she was suddenly more eager to get to work. She called Mary Sue and promised that Grace would have more space available in her sickbay and the more stable patients would be moved to temporary quarters within the hour.
