“Gathering in the Galley and Sickbay”
(contd from Taylor’s ‘127’)
Location: BFOV SHIV
SD: 2.80523.2255
Scene: Galley
Physician Kate MacNeil entered the ship’s kitchen, her long finger brushing off the stainless steel counter. A grin formed on her lips as the half-Nuimon petted William Wallace, her faithful companion. The large, white wolf-dog gave out a low growl. Two men moved aside and took off, upon walking in close proximity with the animal. Most on the SHIV avoided William Wallace as much as possible, even though they knew the creature would not do anything to them unless otherwise ordered by his mistress. But the Makinis Ugeen revealed his fangs, whenever William Wallace growled at him.
P’Trella, the SHIV’s fastidious cook and professional surrogate mother, stated dryly without taking her eyes off the large pot filled with boiling, hot yellowish green liquid. “You’re here for the animal’s meal?”
“Yes,” the Scot confirmed, gently rubbing her pet’s ears. She began cackling to herself. “There is such a beauty to my work, something I find not many appreciate.” She didn’t see the cook nearly roll her eyes at the eccentric physician’s comment. It was well-known amongst the SHIV crew regarding MacNeil’s enthusiasm of her research and callousness towards the sufferings of the subjects involved in the experiments, not that many really cared. The crew in general was content to leave the doctor alone in the lab unless they needed medical assistance.
The Vissian/Orion hybrid nodded, still refusing to turn away from the soup she was cooking. While Captain Byrne’s meals were specially made for her, the rest of the crew was stuck with whatever P’Trella prepared daily. “I’ll be with you in a minute”
William Wallace circled around itself, his mouth watering at a lump of meat lying on top of a table. Its tongue was sticking out, drool pooling on the floor. The dog lifted itself upwards and began pawing at the meat. Kate sniggered, watching the animal lovingly. “He is getting hungry, you know.”
Sighing, P’Trella looked away from the pot and ordered brusquely, waving her hand. “Not that one.” She quickly headed to the counter, while Kate pulled William Wallace away from the piece on the table. The Vissian hybrid returned with a morsel of uncooked dark brown meat and tossed it at the dog. William Wallace jumped up and caught the meat with his teeth. The white furry animal trotted to a corner and began silently eating.
P’Trella said curtly, wiping a sweat off her forehead. “I need to return back to my preparing my soup. Be gone after the animal finished its meal.” The green skinned woman walked briskly towards the steaming pot and resumed cooking.
“Don’t worry, P’Trella,” the doctor snidely assured. “William Wallace is known to eat at warp speed…but you knew that already.” She was right as the dog was rapidly gnawing at its food. “Because he eats so fast, he always gets hungry often.”
The Vissian informed coolly. “Some meat will be sent up to your lab tomorrow.”
“Thank you,” MacNeil stated, grinning. “William Wallace will be most appreciative of your efforts in feeding him.”
Kathryn MacNeil was an orphan. She had never met her parents except that her father, Malcolm was a high ranking military officer in the Terran Empire and mother, one of the dreaded Nuimons. Her parents met in very unfortunate circumstances. Malcolm MacNeil once had a bright future in the empire’s military and rose up the ranks quickly. Unfortunately fate had other plans.
The Nuimons physically looked exactly like the Terrans, except for a tiny difference. They had the natural ability to change their eye colour whenever they wanted and so it was easy for them to blend amongst the empire population without getting caught. During shore leave on a resort planet, Malcolm became enchanted by a mysterious Nuimon woman, pretending to be a Terran and that day forever changed his life. The attraction was fateful for the young and ambitious officer as it led to disaster. The relationship was tumultuous and went on for a year until one night he was discovered lying dead in a hot spring. Such was a sad and dishonorable ending for a very promising officer. The Nuimon secretly bore a daughter, whom she abandoned immediately after childbirth and disappeared.
Throughout her entire time at the orphanage in Edinburgh, Scotland, TERRA, Kate never felt love not even for a minute. The mistress of the orphanage, Elizabeth Warwick was cruel, hardly someone who could shower motherly love on innocent children. The children feared her as the mistress gave out severe punishment for misbehavior. Such a cold environment was likely responsible for the person Kate MacNeil became.
William Wallace scampered back to his mistress, panting with delight. “Well,” the half-Nuimon concluded with a satisfied smile as she hugged the animal. “Looks like you’re done.” The dog wagged his tail. Turning to P’Trella, Kate excused herself. “We better get going and see you tomorrow evening.” With that said, the physician and her pet left the kitchen.

Scene: Sickbay
“What can I do for you,” Kathryn casually inquired looking bored as Anaqueen entered the room. She looked exhausted, her movements slowed down. Normally Ana walked quickly but involvement in a certain activity with Captain Byrne and Jaxsper Lawrence tired the brunette. Kate figured out exactly why she visited sickbay because it was a regular occurrence for the Trill after the latter’s strenuous personal time with Byrne.
.
“You know what I want,” Ana replied tersely. The Trill was not fond of the physician, considering the relationship between the Nuimons and the symbionts.
The Nuimons in that universe were a feared race, albeit in a ghoulish way. It was believed they roamed like shadows in the dark, making them ghosts in Terran children’s stories. Their eyes glowed bright blue in the dark, which frightened many little ones. To keep small children obedient, parents would often scare them by threatening to hand them over to a Nuimon. When Kate was a child, she used the fear of Nuimons to play pranks on other children at the orphanage.
The Nuimons were no military power. They did not possess ships of their own but they were experts in stealth making them quite formidable. They didn’t even have a homeworld and were scattered all over the galaxy. The Nuimons were not in the business of hating anyone and often offered their services to any of the major powers for devious reasons no one still knew. They weren’t interested in conquest or making war with others.
The Terran Empire for decades had tried to root out the Nuimons from their hideouts but was so far unsuccessful as the latter had the habit of migrating from one location to another. This was despite the Terrans occasionally using them for intelligence gathering or assassination missions.
The Trill Hegemony, one of the powerful groups in that mirror universe, had a pact made with the Nuimons whose successful stealth methods had placed the symbionts on the winning side of the war with the ‘Free Trill’ rebels. The aristocracy always used the Nuimons as spies and assassins to quell any form of discontent in their realm. It was that particular reason unjoined Trills like Anaqueen hated them for their collaboration with the symbionts. Ana realized Kate was only a hybrid but the former couldn’t help feel a burning dislike for the Scot.
“Right of course,” Kate sneered in a mocking tone. “Fortunate that I am here otherwise how then will you be able to fulfill your addiction?” The doctor walked past William Wallace, who was asleep on the floor and picked up a tiny white patch from a nearby tray. The tall, auburn haired woman strode towards Anaqueen who sat on a biobed and attached the patch on the Trill’s neck. “There you should be able to sleep peacefully,” the half-Nuimon cooed, her indigo eyes glittering with contempt.
Anaqueen gave out a huge breath of relief. “Thank you, Kate.” She then insisted coldly and not for the first time. “But I am not addicted.” The Trill got up from the bed and glared at the physician, whom she knew was making fun of her. Oh MacNeil knew very well Ana was not a drug addict but still couldn’t resist the temptation to taunt her.
Kathryn watched Anaqueen head towards the door with a sly smile. “Do you think I can have a live symbiont, should you encounter one the next time?” She questioned cheekily. “I always wanted to see what kind of subject it makes in my experiments.”
“I can give you a dead one,” Anaqueen offered sarcastically. **And who knows it may just be Lords Spankryz and Nilanti that will end up as Doctor MacNeil’s specimens one day.**
************************************************************************
NRPG: Full-blooded Nuimons have the capability of voluntarily changing their eye colours but not Kate since she’s a hybrid and this is the case in both universes :)
Jasmina: Hope my handling of P’Trella was okay with you.
