"You did a very good job handling your counterpart today, Kate."
the older woman assured her.

Kate smiled awkwardly "As horrified as I was by the actions of
someone with my face and my voice, I loved being back in sickbay again...."

"Don't start." Daisy chided from behind her desk, giving Kate a
look of warning.

Struggling to contain her annoyance, Kate managed to keep a
weak and polite smile on her face.

"I wasn't complaining. I was just saying...."

Daisy wagged her finger. "I don't want to hear it."

"I know...." Kate grimaced, "I know. You've already made it
clear. If *YOU* don't get to return to sickbay on a "full time"
basis then, neither do I."

Daisy smirked with glee - a look that made the half-Nuimon physician
think her commanding officer had been spending way too much time
with Cade Foster.

"It just seems a little...spiteful." Kate muttered under her breath.

"Oh, it *IS* spiteful." Daisy teased dryly "That's a perk of my
job. I get to be a spiteful bitch and there's nothing you can do
about it."

Kate sighed. "Right. Aye, sir."

Daisy changed the subject, "Again, though - excellent work with the 'other' Kate MacNeil."

"Thank you, Commander."

"You're dismissed." Daisy replied, waving her off and turning her
focus to a comm padd on her desk.

Kate sighed and left the Commander's ready room feeling morbidly
depressed and thinking to herself,

** Happy Birthday to me **

Though she'd tried to muster a good mood for her date with
Grace, Kate sulked through doing her hair and make-up as
well as through putting on the lovely blue dress that had
heads turning as she approached the spot where she and Grace
had planned to meet. Her mood was too dark to appreciate
the looks given to her by many of the men and some of the
women.

She smiled awkwardly through some polite "small talk" with
passers by and was beginning to think the date was a bad
idea. She thought maybe it would be better to just go home,
away from all these people, and just brood over her day.

It didn't *feel* like a celebration. Even with her successful
work in sickbay, Daisy was still managing
to make her miserable.

As she found herself in the middle of a small croud of
happy people chattering about new items on the menu at the
restaurant, complimenting her dress, congradulating her on
her promotion to XO, she was horribly depressed.

Bogged down with her own "funk", she didn't hear Grace
approach. She didn't realize her Orion companion had
arrived until a 'hush' fell over the people around her.

Months ago, everyone was accustomed to seeing the Orion
Physician as this bitter, angry woman who stomped around
with crew-cut short, butchered hair and the most conservative
clothing possible, making every effort to hide her natural Orion sensuality. Even as she helped others with her medical
skills, the former sex slave had carried herself like
'damaged goods'.

Her friendship with Kate was the first thing to start bringing
her out of her shell. Heads turned the day Grace first showed
up to work with her hair lengthened to a much more feminine,
shoulder-length style. The Orion muttered awkwardly about
having lost a 'bet' and how it was a matter of honor that
obligated her to keep the additional length to her hair and
did her best to ignore the questions and gossip about
the change in her appearance.

That was nothing compared to the change Grace made for
Kate's birthday.

Out in the open, for everyone to see - the Orion Physician
had changed her usual sweatshirt and sweat
pants for a lovely and snug black dress.

All the bad parts of her day were forgotten when she saw
Grace's long black hair tied up in a bun, soft
ringlets around her face. Ruby ear rings dangled from
each ear, highlighting her long, slender neck that
flowed into a low-cut, seductive neckline. A hint of
glitter across her cleavage cought the light as Grace
inhaled deeply, then exhaled - giving Kate a nervous
little smile.

"Happy Birthday."

Kate just stood there for a moment - possitively gobsmacked.
She got a little light-headed because the Orion's sheer
beauty made her literally forget to breathe. Then, she
finally gasped and gave a small laugh.

"It is now."

Grace blushed, wringing her hands. Then, she smiled. "I
hoped you'd like it."

They held hands and Kate teased, "Is it ok for me to tell you
how beautiful you are?"

"I'm not used to this." Grace admitted nervously. "It's been
a long time."

Kate squeezed her hand. "A long time since anyone told you
that you're beautiful?"

"No." Grace admitted. "Along time since there was anyone
I wanted to be beautiful for."

The two women were oblivious to other people watching them
and quietly muttering things like "Awwww" amongst themselves.

Grace gently lifted Kate's hand to her mouth and gave it
a quick little kiss. In that moment, the half-nuimon once
again found herself forgetting to breathe and it was her
turn to blush.

They continued looking all starry-eyed at each other, with
Grace complimenting Kate's choice of dress and Kate asking
where Grace got her jewelry - until they were walked across
the room to a table for two. It was only then that Grace
realized people were staring and she became
self-conscious.

The Orion's eyes darkened and she offered Kate in a timid little voice, "We could get something to go, if you wanted."

"It's my birthday." Kate reminded her. "And I can't think
of anything that would make me happier or more proud than
sitting down here and having everyone see me with you."

Grace blushed, a big smile spreading across her face. Then,
she openly reached across the table and rested her green-skinned
hand on top of Kate's. " As you wish."

NRPG: Hi, everyone!

I wanted to put in an appearance and I wrote this happy little tidbit for
Ran to thank her for the great job she's doing taking care of everyone while I wait for my surgery.

"Mirror Kate" is not gone. She would either be in a cell or confined to a private quarters under guard and trying to negotiate better accomodations. Of course, she's "bad" and would be eventually dealt with as such - but that will be when Ran is ready just like with others and their alternates.

Take your time sorting out your alternates and each other while also enjoying some R&R. You've all earned it. You guys are a great crew and I'm proud of you. :)

As things stand for me now - I'm going in the hospital overnight for tests on August 3rd and then having surgery on August 14th. In the meantime, I'm on partial bedrest and will put in occasional small posts as best as I can.

Thanks for your patience.

Kim
