Cursed with an abnormally vast perception of this cruel reality, trudging through levels of intense emotion no small minded creature could withstand! So it is no surprise that, most of all, there is pain in superiority. I suffer because I am better."133"

Scene: Starfleet Academy Briefing Room 3a

=======================================

The cadets stood as the commandant walked inand up to the podium at the head of the main table. "As you were cadets." He said, pulling a padd from a pocket and placing it on the top of the podium. "You cadets are representational of the finest trainees this academy has to offer. Most of you are green beyond recognition, and a few of you are already experienced space farers. Hell one of you is already an officer, taking ACT as a wise career boosting educational experience. It is for this reason you all have been assembled here today. The federation is at war, and every officer is needed. A few weeks ago, the USS Mataco, the gamma quadrant fleet's flagship, was destroyed in combat with the Dominion. Her replacement, USS Trenton is sitting one of our docking bays waiting to be delivered to GS2. You cadets will crew the Trenton allowing skilled crews to remain at their present posts."

Several excited grins were passed around the table, with one Cadet, still wearing the green of the Starfleet Marine Corps remained stoic at the end of the table.

"Ensign Calhoun. You are familiar with the area, and the intricacies of the voyage correct?"

"Ive been to gateway on a number of occasions sir. GS1 was my home for a time, the Discovery made port there a few years ago, and the Patriot was instrumental in breaking the Dominion siege on the station at the start of the war."

"Very good. For this mission, you will serve as Chief Engineer and Executive Officer."

Kyle nodded accepting the orders, even though it really didn’t mean much since they were only having a crew of about 100.

"Now, Part of the mission will be to deliver the Trenton to the station and relinquish her to the Commodore, you will then board the saucer section of the Mataco, and make best possible speed back to the wormhole. Once through, you will proceed to the shipyards at Starbase 110 near Betazoid by route of Starbases 9, 125, 96, and finally 90 before going onto 110. This journey will take roughly 6 months. Mister Calhoun, you will remain on Gateway for your next assignment so take your family with you."

"Yes sir."

"If that is all, everyone is dismissed until 0800 tommorow morning." Kyle stayed behind while all the other cadets left the room, leaving himself and the commandant. "You have something to add Ensign?"

"Sir, with all respect, I was told my next assignment would be my old post on the Patriot."

"This goes no further than this room understood?"

"Aye sir."

"Patriot is on a severely classified mission. The ship in dock is a hologram projection over a old destroyer. The Patriot will pick you up on Gateway."

"Very good sir."

"Good luck Ensign."

The group of cadets, one ensign, and one Lieutenant who would serve as co of this voyage all entered the bridge together. Kyle and the Lieutenant went to their stations, leaving the cadets at the lift, awestruck at the brand new starship.

"Stations!" the Lieutenant barked. The cadets finally broke up and went to their specified posts.

"Mister Calhoun, all engines and power systems to departure ready."

"Warp core is on standbye, awaiting departure clearance" he replied from the engineering station. Most of the other primary stations had nervous cadets sitting at them, including the helm. The Helmsman though had scored extremely high on the simulations over the last 4 years, and had passed his flight quals with flying colors. He still looked like he was about to melt however.

"OPS, release docking clamps. Helm, thrusters to standbye."

"Cleared for departure from Starbase Operations, Space doors opening." The Operations Cadet said from her station. A young Vulcan female, she appeared to be as stoic as ever.

"Helm, engage thrusters, 500 kph. And try not to scratch the paint."

"Aye sir"

Lieutenant Ganesh looked up from her console at the hybrid Exec. "Commander MacNiel, the proximity alarms have gone off. Sensors show a starship of Federation origin. IFF claim's it's friendly, USS Trenton, Charleston Class."

"We were expecting the Trenton any day now, send standard challenge Lieutenant, then clear them for docking in the Mataco's docking bay."

"yes ma'am"

"Slow to impulse, prepare for docking."

"Gateway control welcomes us and requests we submit security codes."

"Transmit file 41132"

"Code accepted, they are directing us to docking port 9 and ask that we hold station while the Mataco is moved."

"Take us to 1500 meters and hold station."

"Mataco has vacated the dock. We are clear to proceed."

"Docking procedure. Everyone code blue."

All around the Lieutenant, cadets released their controls to the automated systems of gateway traffic control whick glided them smoothly into dock.

"secure all stations, Gateway Operations has accommodations for everyone, report to the Mataco at 0800 tommorow. Mister Calhoun, you have officially completed your ACT training. And given that Starfleet Command hereby promotes you to Lieutenant Junior Grade. You are dismissed until your ship arrives."

Kyle nodded at the Lieutenant, and left the bridge. Tyler and the boys were here with him on this trip, and would return to Earth on the next transport after the Patriot arrived. He met with them on the crew deck, while they were piling up luggage by the door. "So we have some time, what should we do?"

"Well, we could dump the boys in a daycare and have some fun" JT and matt both glared at him over that suggestion.

Kyle thought it over a bit "I think they would be ok on their own for a few hours. Lets go to the promenade, see what's changed."

"It’s a plan"
