“As the GATEWAY Turns”
(contd from Jamie’s ‘On the Wall’)

Scene: Sickbay ->Zel’s Quarters->Science department

Time index: Continuing from the post, “Tuesday Evening"

Daisy gave her son a smile and nodded - indicating it was ok for him to go with Kate.
As the boy stepped down from the biobed, Kate was so moved by his fear and his despair that she immediately pulled him into a hug.
"Shhh.....It's going to be ok, darling...."
As they walked away from Daisy, Kate offered. "There are some new animals in the science department. While we wait to hear how LJ's doing, I bet Lt. Varn would let us have a peek at them."
"Can we go see Zel Rohan first?" Gavi asked. A hint of a smile was already spreading over the boy's face as he said, “When I tell him about the Dark Lord, I bet he gives me a free action figure from his collection."
Kate walked closely with Gavi - half scared the "Dark Lord" would make another appearance. It gave her some comfort when she spotted a security officer following them from a discreet distance - keeping an eye on Gavi.
Zel had modest civilian quarters on GATEWAY now. A crewman from the COMMENDATION was there making sure the last of Zel's things were successfully delivered. Zel and Kate gave each other a polite greeting and then the young boy launched himself into the arms of his favorite shopkeeper/salesman.
"I'm glad you came back."
No longer a bartender on the Commendation, Zel managed a weak smile and made no comment about being evicted from Anaqueen's ship. He just hugged the boy and said,
"It's good to see you, too."
The boy's body language reflected what a rough day he'd had and Zel noticed the jump suit wasn't Gavi's usual type of clothing.
"Everything ok?"
"You didn't hear about the Dark Lord?" Kate asked. "He attacked Gavi's family today. LJ is still in sickbay."
Zel smirked. "They don't always keep us civilians in the loop about these things."
Then, he rustled Gavi's hair. "I'm sorry, kiddo. LJ's going to be ok, though. Right?"
Gavi nodded. Then, he asked, “Are you going to be selling any more of those cool toys?"
Zel chuckled. "Ask me that again after I've had a chance to unpack, ok?"
Gavi let out a little sigh and replied, "Ok."
"We were just going to the science department and maybe the Animal Library." Kate added, changing the subject. "Then, Gavi asked if we could see you first."
Zel's eyes widened. "I'm flattered, young sir. Though I should tell you some of the animals are scary. I got a chance to see what the Commendation crew beamed off that ship before it was left so badly crippled...."
Kate blinked. "What?"
"The gossip is your counterpart kept some rather horrifying projects on that ship."
**That’s not surprising, ** MacNeil thought with annoyance, recalling her encounter with the alternate, a woman who still gave her chills and had occasionally been an object of her nightmares. Kate guessed the mirror doctor was working on some genetic engineering projects and those animals might have been a result of those experiments.
Gavi's eyes widened and he replied like a typical young boy.
"Oooh....now I really wanna see."
Zel smiled. "I'm a big concerned about a puppy I saw. Mind if I come with you?"
Kate smiled. "Sure."
The three of them walked together for a while, Zel also noticing a Security officer following. They passed by a window and saw what was left of the BFOV SHIV held on a docking platform. It was crippled, hull breaches on every deck. Maintenance crews in space suits crawled over the broken hull - looking for what could be salvaged and what could be repaired.
Kate sighed, remembering what they'd seen on that ship. Then, she encouraged Gavi.
"Let's head to the science department, ok?"
When they got there, Thomas was leaving. The winged Lieutenant said he was heading to sickbay to ask Daisy about something and referred them to a junior science officer for a tour.
Some of the smaller animals were in isolation. Quarantine was a precaution incase of pathogens because they were painfully aware of "Mirror Kate's" possible cruelty and what she could have infected them with. Lt. Cmdr. MacNeil felt a painful knot in her stomach as she watched the little creatures struggle in their isolation chambers, their tiny eyes filled with pain. That woman really did play around with genetic material in horrific ways, the ExO could not imagine possible.
An Ensign walked them through the section of healthier animals and assured them, "We've already transferred some of these animals to THE ANIMAL LIBRARY. Mr. Giles is working on finding them homes."
Kate wondered about visiting the ANIMAL LIBRARY and talking to Anthony Giles about adopting one or two of those small animals or birds. She was sure William Wallace, Mary Sue and Esmeralda Tharanuil wouldn’t mind having more companions in the household.
Gavi was drawn to a puppy. It was barely old enough to wean but it had three heads.
"Oh, wow....."
"Conjoined...." Kate gulped. "The poor things."
Gavi chuckled. "Are you kidding? It's so cool. Can I have it for LJ? Please?"
Zel smiled. "This is the puppy I was worried about. I think LJ would enjoy him very much. Then, he asked the Ensign. “Is he eating better? Is he healthy?"
The Ensign smiled. "I'd just approved him going to the Animal Library tomorrow."
Kate's comm badge beeped. She tapped her chest and heard Daisy's voice.
[[LJ is out of surgery. He's sore but he's doing very well.]]
Gavi's face lit up and he glanced around to all the adults in the room. "Oh, can I take the puppy to sickbay, please? I want to have a gift for LJ when he wakes up...."
The three adults looked at each other and Gavi gave them all another pleading look and smiled sweetly. "Please?"
A moment later, Kate, Zel and Gavi left the science department with Gavi carrying
a pet carrier. Inside, a black three-headed puppy squirmed and yipped - the first and third heads fighting with each other over a small raw-hide bone.
