Scene: Operations
TI: Following Kim’s last post ‘Fecal matter….’
It was the beginning of the first shift. Change of personnel with those from the night shift leaving and the first shift ones arriving to commence their day had already taken place. The previous night was chaotic with the dark lord attacking Daisy and her children in an attempt to kidnap Gavi. LJ was badly injured and had undergone surgery. The teenager was already released from sickbay and returned to his family.
Lt. Cmdr. Kathryn MacNeil stepped off the turbo lift, a frustrated look visible in her violet eyes. After her suspension period was over, Kate expected to return back to Sickbay. But apparently life was full of surprising twists. Never in her life had she imagined of ever wearing a red accented uniform, yet there she was the second in command of the Federation’s largest station. She wondered if it was fate’s idea of a practical joke. Unbelievable as far as she was concerned. And now with Daisy leaving for BAJOR with her kids, the Scot was suddenly placed in charge.
Kate was dismayed with Daisy’s adverse reaction towards Hunter using his abilities to help in LJ’s healing. The Pnarran ‘light magic’ had enabled the boy to start saying more normal words. Surely the ExO thought the blonde CO would at least understand, even be grateful for what Hunter did for LJ. Perhaps once Daisy got the chance to see how well her foster son’s health progressed positively over the next few days, she would stop being angry with her and the marine and realize they did the right thing, at least that’s what Kate hoped.
Spotting Lt. Savitri Ganesh, the deputy Operations officer and currently in charge of the department till a new chief was assigned, coming up the steps, Kate nodded a polite greeting. “Lieutenant Ganesh, how are you this morning?”
“I’m doing well, Commander,” the Indian woman replied courteously.
The half-Nuimon smiled. “I’m glad to hear.” The two women headed down the steps, when the taller woman tapped her comm. badge. “MacNeil to Lt. Varn.”
[[Varn here.]]
Kate ordered promptly. “Report to Ops now.”
[[Yes Commander.]]

TI: A few minutes later
Thomas had arrived at Ops, wondering why he was summoned by the ExO. Did Lt. Cmdr. MacNeil want a report on the condition of the genetic engineered specimens transported from her alternate’s laboratory on the SHIV? Perhaps, he wondered, with the Scottish woman’s love for animals, she was looking to adopt some of those poor creatures. She already had three of her own and treated them like her own babies. The chimp, especially, was a bit of a handful and many were puzzled over how Kate managed to keep Mary Sue in check.
He noticed Kate walking up the stairs and approaching him with a very weak smile, making the CSciO deduce it was not real. Something was not right, which gave the young man a not so good feeling. Clearing his throat, Thomas inquired. “What do you want to see me about, Commander?”
“Commander Davidson and her family are taking some time off to take care of LJ’s recovery,” Kate quickly answered. “They will be leaving for BAJOR today.”
“I see,” Varn nodded, taking a moment to process the information and was curious over the CO’s sudden departure from the station especially when a war was taking place. “Is Cade going with them?”
“Yes…our Dr. Foster,” the Nuimon hybrid replied, sighing inwardly. “Actually I summoned you here to inform you that you’re the acting ExO for the duration of Commander Davidson’s leave.”
Thomas raised an eyebrow, feeling a little shocked at the news. All of a sudden he felt with discomfort all eyes in the room were on him. He noticed at the corner of his eye, two officers whispering to each other, with one of them briefly glancing at him but little did Thomas realize it had nothing to do with the wings beneath his coat.
He finally responded politely. “Yes ma’am.” An awkward silence floated between them before Thomas added. “I will arrange for Ensign Turner to take care of things in science labs, while I’m occupied with ExO duties.”
“Then that’s settled,” Kate concluded, feeling satisfied yet slightly unsettled in the presence of her colleague. A tinge of guilt filled the auburn haired woman, even though she had not harmed anyone. But thinking of what mirror Kate did to Thomas made it difficult to face him. It was silly, she knew after all it was not her who tortured and drugged the CSciO during his captivity on the SHIV. It was that ‘other’ woman, whom she morosely knew felt no regrets. After all Thomas was just another ‘subject’ to her.
Still, Kate wondered sadly what Thomas was feeling towards her knowing she reminded him of mirror Doctor MacNeil. Looking behind her and watching Lt. Ganesh diligently at work at her station, the ExO concluded with a wry smile. “I have a busy day, taking care of all of Commander Davidson’s appointments.” She then instructed. “You can access the terminal at my office for a list of my tasks for you to do.”
“Yes ma’am,” Varn nodded.
“Good,” MacNeil stated before she went past the tall man to the corridor where the offices of the CO, ExO and Ops Chief were located.

Scene: CO’s office
TI: Later that morning
Lt. Jake Crichton dropped a few PADDs on the table, informing. “These were supposed to be for Commander Davidson to read.” He stood in front of the desk and wondered how the ExO was coping after the tense altercation between her and the CO. The engineer knew had he not been there to hold Daisy back, she would have ended up sending the half-Nuimon to sickbay. He didn’t know the entire story and only gathered the gist of the situation that triggered the fury in Commander Davidson, enough to become a little violent. Something about Hunter using Pnarran light magic to help in LJ’s recovery and how Daisy wasn’t consulted. Crichton was tempted to ask Lt. Cmdr. MacNeil to explain in detail but wasn’t sure now was the right time.
“Thank you, Lieutenant,” MacNeil acknowledged before leaning back in the chair. She inquired. “What do they contain?”
“Oh just reports on routine maintenance work on the station systems,” Jake answered, pointing his finger at one of the PADDs. He watched the ExO pick up the particular PADD and quickly glancing at its contents. Kate sighed, still slightly taken back by the technical jargon the report entailed, despite having taken refresher lessons in Engineering given by the Chief Engineer as preparations for her role as Chief of Operations. But her understanding of engineering reports had improved from when she stated out as Ops officer.
Crichton remarked, flashing a friendly grin. “I see my lessons have helped.”
“Yes it has,” the older officer agreed, placing the PADD back on the table. “I would have been completely lost without those lessons.” She returned a less convincing grin.
The Scot remembered the CEO was there during the heated confrontation between herself, Hunter and Daisy and felt totally embarrassed to be acting in a way unbecoming of a first officer. First officer…oh wait. Kate wasn’t that for more than a day or so and already Daisy thrust her into commanding the station, a task that was just so overwhelming for the Nuimon hybrid, making her tempted to rush to her bedroom and hide.
Noticing the colour slowly draining from the auburn haired woman’s pale features, Crichton inquired, becoming concerned. “Everything okay, ma’am?”
Taking in a deep breath, Kate assured with a disarming smile. “Yes, Mr. Crichton, I’m fine. I think the temperature in this warmer than I’d like.”
