Daisy was determined not to let her children see how much her brief
conversation with Ben had upset her.

She made up a vague excuse why the Captain of the PATRIOT felt the need
to come speak to her and then went to work on a traditional Bajoran dinner
involving lots of fresh chopped native meats, fruits and vegetables.

She strained herself to smile and forced herself to make 'small talk' while
chopping quite loudly and aggressively. She blamed her tears and her
sniffles on the onions and insisted she was fine when people
asked if anything was wrong.

Foster was more subdued than usual himself. He sensed the nature of
the connection between Daisy and her 'visitor' and was left with his own
feelings of jealousy, hurt and confusion.

Normally, he spoke whatever he thought with no regard to anyone else's
feelings but he'd grown to love Daisy's children like they were his own and
didn't want to upset them any more than she did. The older man cracked
a few dry jokes at Daisy's expense about how she only chopped the fruits
and vegetables so loudly and so aggressively because they'd been
misbehaving at the mainland farmer's market the day before. Now, he
practically sneered, they were doomed to face the wrath of the
mighty Commander Davidson of GATEWAY station.

The setting for dinner was lovely. The deck around the house allowed
them a spectacular view of the green ocean, the beach and the setting sun.
Mav, Erek and LJ all noticed that Cade and Daisy both picked half-heartedly
at their food and drank multiple glasses of wine.

As the moons rose, they had chocolate cake for desert and Wangel Erek took
it upon himself to suggest he and Erika should return to the Wangel Family
home for the night. Mav and his brood needed to head back to the PATRIOT, too.

Daisy gave Mav a long, tight hug. The Marine teased, "Go ahead, tell me I'm
still pretty. You know you want to."

She pinched his face and teased him in a sort of baby talk, "You are the
most gorgeous marine. Yes, you are."

"Damn straight." smirked the Marine. And then he pulled her into another hug
and whispered, "Don't give Kenta another thought, ok? I actually kinda like
the old guy...."

"Cade is not old." Daisy chuckled weakly, pulling back.

"Well, not compared to you." Mav teased. "....but you have a few years
on me, don't you?"

Daisy smacked him lightly across his chest and they both managed to laugh.
Then, Mav kissed her forehead and said "Bye, Moo." and headed back to his ship
with Mav's collection of boys following close behind.

Daisy sniffled watching them go. Then, she and Cade were left alone with
LJ and Gavi.

The older teenager sensed tension between Foster and Daisy and informed Gavi
they were going upstairs for a while. Gavi whined he'd rather go down to the
beach - maybe electrocute some rocks and LJ wrestled the boy up the stairs so
Daisy and Cade were alone.

There was an awkward silence and then Daisy finally asked, "Is this where you
tell me you're leaving, too? Maybe going back to GATEWAY or maybe asking for
a civilian consultant gig elsewhere?"

Foster smirked and stepped towards her. "He was the one, wasn't he? That
Jos saw you with in San Francisco? I had a feeling you were still...."

"I'm not." Daisy assured him quickly. Then, she started to argue... "And if
I was.....I told you I'm not ready to ...."

"I could take the kids." Cade offered flatly, interrupting her. "I could take
them back to the station if you want to go after him. What's his name, Kenta?"

Daisy grimaced miserably, "I'm not going after him."

"And what about me?" Cade asked cautiously, "If I did leave right now....would
you come after me?"

Daisy paused and looked at him intensely. Then, she smiled, "Yes. You could
leave me right now and nobody would blame you but I'd come after you."

"And beg me to come back?" Foster waggled his eyes, starting to tease her.

The older man touched his hand to her throat and pulled her close. Comforted
by his gesture, Daisy teased in return, "Actually, I'd have you tossed into the
brig until you beg me to *let* you stay."

The boys watched from the stairs as the two of them hugged. Seeing Cade and
Daisy looking like they were going to be ok, LJ and Gavirosh exchanged looks
of relief and big grins......
