Varn had gone to Sickbay to consult with Dr. Poe, leaving Crichton alone with the samples. The forcefield still shimmered above the table, on guard against any potential threats (though Crichton doubted a forcefield would be much good against whatever the tablet meant by "armageddon"). Crichton had continued running tests on them, most of them coming back "inconclusive". He wasn't an expert, but it looked like whatever these things were composed of, it was unlike any other material in the galaxy.

Firstly, the devices appeared to have no surface temperature whatsoever. Not hot, not cold... a literal *absence* of temperature. Crichton had already done a full diagnostic on his scanners to make sure they weren't malfunctioning, and everything had checked out.

Also, the samples were proving incredibly difficult to scan. Crichton had tried several different calibrations, but hadn't been able to get a look at the inside of the devices. Whatever material they were made of seemed impervious to normal scans. Whoever had built these devices certainly had access to some impressive technology.

After another failed attempt at scanning them, Crichton leaned back and rubbed his eyes. He wanted to get up, stretch his legs a bit, maybe get a coffee, but he didn't want to leave the samples unattended, on the off chance that they started doing something.

 Like, for example, glowing green.

Crichton blinked, thinking it was a trick of the light playing through the forcefield. But his eyes weren't playing tricks on him- the samples had started to glow a dull green color. As he watched, the color brightened and intensified, until Crichton realized his eyes were starting to hurt. He tried to look away, but the light was kind of pretty, and he was beginning to feel warm inside, like he was a little drunk (but he never drinks in the middle of the day! Or was it night time?) and then his eyes started to burn and he wanted to yell but didn't want to ruin the ambience so instead he tried to sit but wound up falling straight backwards (hey! Falling can be fun!) and then-

 Nothing.

Varn entered the lab and, immediately, his eyes fixed on the body on the floor.

Jacob Crichton lay on his back, expressionless. His eyes were only half-open, and he was deathly pale.

Varn slapped his comm-badge immediately. "Varn to Sickbay. Medical emergency in the science lab!"

He reached down quickly and felt for a pulse. It was irregular, but it was there.

"Jake?" he asked. "Can you hear me?"

Crichton did not reply, and made no indication that he'd heard. Varn reached out and raised on of Crichton's eye-lids, then stared in disbelief at what he saw.

Crichton's eye was glowing- an intensely bright green.
