“Animals on the Loose!”

Scene: Ops
Kate rubbed her temples, feeling a headache forming. She had spent numerous hours reading plenty of reports pertaining to incidents involving Durali possessed individuals. Ensign Vol reported a few civilians were arrested due to instigating riots in protest against those whose bodies contained the Durali consciousnesses. The culprits sent to the brig felt the possessed needed to be locked up and ranted about how station command was not doing its job in maintaining order.
The press was going wild with collecting stories and were broadcasting non-stop over what the possessed were doing. Both Daisy and she had received many requests for interviews from both Fedcom and FNS, which the half-Nuimon turned down, considering her CO was away and she herself was in no mood to speak to reporters.
She groaned in annoyance at the number of complaints that the civilians sent to Ops. There were issues over how a dozen adults, whose minds were taken over by Durali children, took over the Big Kahuna Park and embarrassing themselves. Many parents, who were lucky their children were not possessed, were incensed over their off-spring having a tough time enjoying the park. Well, Kate concluded dryly to herself, those grown-ups would be red-faced with humiliation, once the alien children souls were transferred to their new bodies.
MacNeil’s thoughts were broken, when Lt. Ganesh approached her. The Indian woman alerted. “Commander, I just received an urgent message for you from Mr. Anthony Giles.”
The Scot questioned, raising an eyebrow. “What did he say?”
“Someone broke into the establishment,” Savitri began quickly. “The culprits let all the animals loose.”
Kate bristled at the news before inquiring in a cool tone. “Where are they now?” The ExO made a great effort to maintain her composure when all her six pets were somewhere on the station and in their current situation, they were likely in danger. The half-Nuimon wanted to leave Ops to search for them.
“Security has dispatched a small team after them,” Ganesh informed. “I am running a sensor sweep of the module and will relay the information to security, once the animals’ location has been obtained.” The aOps noted the discomfort on the tall woman’s facial features and sympathized with her. Everyone knew how fond MacNeil was over the pets and treated them as her children.
“Let me know, when they’re located,” MacNeil ordered, clearly feeling annoyed and worried over her pets’ wellbeing. Her new ones in particular were vulnerable after the suffering endured at the hands of mirror Kate. She hoped security would find the animals in one piece.

Scene: Animal Library
Zel Rohan questioned as he entered the pet daycare center. “So do we know the identity of the persons who committed this act?”
Giles answered stiffly, cleaning up an empty pen, where twin mutated hens used to live. “Not quite but apparently Ensign Vol tells me of a witness spotting three men, a Klingon, Ferengi and a Cardassian, running and laughing.”
Rohan blinked, getting a little confused. “So what does that got to do with the break in?”
“Well, the witness thinks they were coming from the direction of my establishment,” Anthony said, shrugging. The Englishman was incensed over the incident and more upset regarding his missing wards than the actual break in an entry. Giles was feeling overwhelmed with guilt, even though it was really not his fault.
“A Klingon doing this?” Zel questioned, looking aghast. “I find this hard to believe.”
Giles pointed out. “Well, many people on the station have been acting strangely lately so it’s not far fetched to hear about Klingons behaving out of the norm.”
The hybrid muttered. “The station is in a mess right now.”

Scene: Elsewhere in the Promenade
It was a hard time tracking down the animals, many of whom were pets of the station inhabitants as those creatures were constantly on the move. Not to mention the promenade was huge. With problems occurring with other Durali-possessed persons all over the station, animals running around made it more of a nuisance for the security personnel, who preferred to deal with more serious cases.
It was only a matter of time before a small team of four officers caught up with the culprits, who were hanging around some of the animals. The security officer leading the team contacted Ensign Vol, letting her know that Lt. Commander MacNeil’s pets were amongst the bunch.
Something about the scene puzzled the officers. The three men were happily laughing and playing with the animals. It was then the security team leader realized they were possessed by Durali consciousnesses and judging from their behaviors, it was deduced their bodies were occupied by children.
Ensign Vol arrived at the place a moment later, accompanied by Lt. Cmdr. MacNeil and WO3 Kinek-Anjo, a zoologist from the science department. The half-Nuimon spotted her parrot, perched comfortably atop the Cardassian’s shoulder. William Wallace, upon noticing his mistress, ran out from behind the Klingon’s feet and jumped into her arms. Mary Sue was seated against the wall, her brown furry arms wrapped protectively around something smaller.
The Durali kids occupying the bodies suddenly huddled close to each other and glared at the Starfleet officers. The half-Vulcan approached the three and addressed them calmly. “Will you explain why you have released these animals?”
The Durali occupying the Cardassian replied sullenly. “We were fascinated by these exotic creatures and wanted to play with them.”
Sardra informed, unfazed by the petulance radiated by the Durali-occupied beings. “You do realize that breaking into a locked establishment, without permission from the owner and releasing animals from their safe harbor is a crime and punishable by our laws.”
“Will you punish us?” The Durali-Cardassian inquired, suddenly becoming worried and cowered behind his companions.
“You will be detained, due to your conditions,” Vol stated.
“We didn’t mean any harm,” the child occupying the Cardassian’s mind pleaded. “We only wanted to play with them.”
The security chief pointed out. “Well logic dictates if you had waited for Mr. Giles to open his establishment, then it is possible he could have allowed you to observe the animals.” The Vulcan wasn’t really sure if the Englishwoman would have permitted the three individuals to touch any of his wards.
The Klingon suddenly got up and growled. “Get out of my body. You ruined my honour with your actions!” It was obvious to everyone that there was struggle of souls between the Klingon man and the Durali child, not sure whether it was a girl or boy.
“This host hates me!” The alien wailed, having managed to take control of the body, before the Klingon fought back.
“You took my body without my consent and conducted yourself with cowardice and dishonor.”
Kate stepped forward and commanded. “Enough, both of you!” She narrowed her purple eyes as the Durali-Klingon became silent. “Well that’s better,” the ExO quipped. The Scot waited in silence for a few moments before speaking with a gentler tone. “We’re working on obtaining new bodies for you, so all you need to do is be patient and stay out of trouble.”
The Cardassian replied with a shrug. “I like this body. It makes me strong and gets people to do things for me.”
“Well…” The ExO responded, raising an eyebrow. “I don’t believe the host wants you to stay forever.”
“I locked him away forever since he was troubling me,” the child in the Cardassian man’s body said, sounding proud.
“If your race had any honor left in them after a million years, then you will all leave our bodies,” the Klingon bellowed.
“You be quiet!” The Durali youngling in his body resurfaced.
“When do the new bodies arrive?” The Klingon questioned, having pushed aside the Durali.
MacNeil sighed, feeling tempted to just yell. “I’m not sure. It will take some time, considering there are a large number of Durali souls in need of a home.” Her response merely received a loud grunt from the Klingon. “But you all will get new bodies, that much I will assure,” she assured a second later, addressing the Durali.
“Can I still play with the creatures?” The Durali in the Ferengi body asked, sporting an innocent look in his dark eyes. Apparently that child was the youngest of the three and could not understand what was said by everyone around. All she cared about was the variety of animals, she had never seen before and having fun. She picked up a tiny, chipmunk like-creature and rubbed its creamy white coat. Kate’s eyes grew wide with concern as she recognized the animal to be one of her new pets.
Sardra walked to the Ferengi and carefully took the genetically mutated chipmunk. “I’m afraid not as these animals need to be returned back to their home.” The Vulcan hybrid did not bat an eyelash when the Durali-Ferengi sulked. She handed the little animal to MacNeil.
Kate suggested to the Durali, caressing the little creature’s fur. “And you can visit the Animal Library anytime to see them.” The statement thrilled the Durali children, which made it easier for two security officers to escort them away from the area and to sickbay.
Vol informed, heading towards the ExO. “Warrant Officer Kinek-Anjo will remain here to assist in returning the animals back to the Animal Library.”
“Understood,” MacNeil nodded as she felt something move against her leg and a low meow from below. The Scot grinned, glancing downwards to be met with a genetically created kitten, a silver grey and white tabby. The animal shared physical characteristics with a Terran rabbit, judging from the white cotton tail at the back and hind legs replacing its rear paws. It also had a fondness for carrots, something that was not found with cats. William Wallace stood next to the kitten and loomed over it protectively.
Mary Sue popped out from behind the form of the Vulcan chief and rushed to her mistress’s side. The chimpanzee brought along a little monkey, who held her hand. The monkey had soft, light brown and tiny multi-coloured wings protruding from her back. Kate knew it was a hybrid created using DNA of a monkey and a bird, whose origins were unknown. She would need to study mirror Kate’s laboratory records to find more information. Mary Sue had instantly taken a liking for the genetically engineered monkey and treated her like a little sister.
Kate collected all her six pets and headed to sickbay to check on how things were going down there as well as get an excuse to see Grace.
