Location: Svenson Residence, Monterey, California
Scene: Personal Office

Commodore Troy Svenson sat in the quiet of his home office, staring out at the blue-green waves as they padded against the rocky shoreline of Monterey Bay. Other than the sound of the waves, it was eerily silent in the Svenson household, the first real quiet since the boys had returned several weeks earlier.

After attending memorial services for Gene McInnis on Bajor and meeting up with his sons, the Svenson clan had headed to Betazoid, Risa, and around Earth on some much needed family bonding time. The boys had grown quite a bit and had a rush of new experiences in the Gamma Quadrant. And while Troy had yet to learn of everything they had learned in their time apart, he had decided that overall it had been an immensely strengthening experience for the two almost young men.

The boys were presently off with their maternal grandparents, and Troy found himself alone and contemplating his new assignment. It was not one that he relished, especially considering that Peyton and Michael had just returned to him. The commodore couldn't help but chide himself for having grown soft in his “old” age; he also considered that his years stuck behind a desk as a flag officer might have made him unable to endure the hardships that came with wearing the uniform. Of course, he kept such thoughts to himself, and in the end accepted the assignment, it wasn't as if he had any other choice.

He picked up the padd he'd earlier tossed across his desk and read it again, ready the words silently to himself. “Placed on detached assignment to Starfleet Command Special Operations Section...assigned as Commanding Officer, Operation Gamma Ghost...full leverage to take action within scope of regulations and law...hand selected officers, vessels available as requested...infrequent reports to Fleet Admiral...all necessary measures to damage Dominion.”

Svenson's blue eyes flicked out to the sea where he watched the seals swim and climb up on the rocks. The mission was one that the man who was once known as the “boy wonder” would have loved back when that nickname belonged, but so much had changed. He had changed. But one thing hadn't. Troy turned and flicked on his terminal. “Computer, connect me to Admiral Edmund Gage.”

The terminal beeped and the image of the quickly aging admiral appeared on screen. [[Svenson, I was wondering when you would call. I trust that you received your new assignment.]] The larger man's jowls shook slightly as he spoke, and his forehead creased in deep lines as he leaned forward to look more directly at Troy.

Svenson's lips curved up slightly, making his smirk look a bit more devilish than usual. “I did.”

The old man nodded. [[You are not happy about them no doubt. However, it is necessary for the good of the Federation and Starfleet. Surely you understand that.]]

“Of course,” Troy nodded slightly. “That does not mean I have to enjoy it. There are many things about belonging to our organization that I have never enjoyed.”

[[Careful Svenson, even over a line as secure as this they can listen.]] The admiral would know, he had been heading up Section 31's activities for as long as Troy had been involved in them. [[I trust you have arrangements for your sons. Will they be staying with their mother?]]

He ran his had through his blond hair. “That's not possible, she is on long-term assignment to the Delta Quadrant.” Troy knew that the older man knew that, but this was part of the game they played. “The boys will relocate to SB22 or perhaps GS-2, I have to consider the possibility that the wormhole could close again. Either way, my brother Trent and his family live at SB22 and he runs cargo around the area. They'll stay with him.”

[[Very good then.]] He steepled his hands in front of him. [[This is not a courtesy call of course, I need to inform you of one addendum to your assignment. A wild card, you might say.]]

Svenson hated wild cards, especially when he was going into a situation he already had a nebulous feeling about. “What's the wild card?”

[[SFI has determined that you should have an independent contact on one of the vessels you have indicated you will make extensive use of, and have found a perfect candidate. Their agent has field experience with the Dominion and knows the CO of the vessel intimately.]]

“What vessel, I thought we had thoroughly established that I have contacts on the five vessels in the quadrant that I intend to make use of occasionally.” Troy's eyebrows shot up in curiosity.

The old man's small lips curled into what could almost be called a snarl. [[The MCINNIS, the organization is concerned about Bonviva, despite your illogical faith in her. We have arranged for SFI to assign an old flame as her ILO. He is not in the organization, but our contacts will be able to make use of him.]]

Svenson had been responsible for the intelligence officer he spoke of briefly, and suddenly found himself even less enthused about his new job. “Bad idea, but you've already initiated it no doubt, I'll make it work. Is there anything else Ed?”

Edmund Gage scowled on the screen. [[Not at this time, Gage out.]]

Troy shook his head, and started thinking about what he was going to tell the kids, and just how a certain azure CO was going to react to the news.

Location: USS MCINNIS
Scene: Transporter Room

The man appeared out of the cobalt haze of the transporter, and immediately shook his head ever so slightly. “That won't cut it, sloppy, sloppy,” he spoke to himself.

The transporter operator stepped out from behind the controls. “Welcome to the MCINNIS sir, I'm Crewman Rodriguez.” The young man extended his hand to the new arrival.

The newly arrived lieutenant took the hand and shook it vigorously. “Well Rodriguez, it appears we've got some work to do. The transporter phase variance is off by about 0.07%, within safety parameters, but we really need to be on. See what you can do to get it within about 0.02% in the next few hours. This ship is new, were going to have to refine the systems and get the kinks out.” He let go of the man's hand and headed for the door before he realized he had forgotten a very important thing. “Ah yes, I'm Luke Serafini, the apparent chief engineer of this vessel.”

Rodriguez watched Serafini turn again on a dime and stride quickly out the door. The transport operator just shook his head, uncertain what to make of his boss's boss new boss.

Scene: XO's Office

Kat Potter was having yet another joyous session reading a padd about the foibles and kinks that a new starship has when her chime rang. She called out “enter,” without even looking up from her padd.

Luke Serafini walked in, the tight collar of his uniform straining against his neck. “Lieutenant Lucius Serafini reporting for duty, ma'am,” he stated matter-of-factly but with an excited tone that she had expected to hear when she reviewed his bio.

Finally she looked up to see the human/Betazoid doing his best to stand at attention, but doing rather poorly at it. Kat did her best not to laugh. “At ease, you look like your going to fall over.” Kat smiled slightly as the younger man took a seat when directed to. “First off, Lucius, its Kat unless we've got the most formal admiral in the world reviewing us. Second, why has it taken you so long to get up here, weren't you just down on Mars?”

The stocky male flashed a brilliant smirk at her. “Kat, got it. And only my mother calls me Lucius, its either Luke or Tinker, unless were being formal and then you can call me Dr. Serafini.” Luke laughed at his own joke, even as Kat stared back at him somewhat befuddled. “No one calls me doctor, but I do formally have that title...it comes with the doctorate you know.” Kat nodded, hoping to move the conversation along somewhat. “And I've been down on Mars trying to finish the design for the next generation phaser that Starfleet wants to test on the NX-89003 prototype vessel. But I'm here, ready to fix all the bugs I'm finding in this ship.”

Potter looked at him and raised an eyebrow, “bugs?”

“Well, the transporter variance was off, the warp drive is only operating at 92% efficiency, and I understand that we haven't even done an appropriate test of our weapons yet at this time.” He drew in a breath and Kat thought she was going to get a word in but that wasn't to be. “What have you and Commander Bonviva been doing up here the last week?”

Kat raised both her eyebrows at that. “I have been getting the crew settled and making sure all elements of the vessel, including the engineering and technical elements are ready to go. And we are certainly well within reasonable parameters for all systems from my last check. As for Commander Bonviva, she has been speaking with Starfleet Command, and you don't need to worry about her.

Luke rubbed a hand across his stubbly black hair and blinked his dull green-gray eyes while Kat spoke. He realized that there was clearly something about her, but he couldn't put his finger on it. “Of course, of course. Operating parameters are great, but this is a brand new machine, we have to fine tune it or we might as well go get a clunky old Galaxy-class bird and schlep around in that.”

The XO just nodded, wondering just how this was going to work with a starship designer as her chief engineer. “I'm sure you can make things better, that's why we got you after all.” Potter's lips curved up slightly, in what was about as much of a smile as anyone was going to get at this point in the day.

Serafini's eyes lit up. “Yes, I was surprised by the assignment, but I am to make the most of the opportunity with which I am being presented.”

Kat nodded again...
