"The Music of the Nocturiams Part II"
-[/\]-
Scene: Sickbay
Aerdan materialised with the Captain cradled in his
arms. His antenna bent forward focusing all of his
attention on the prone Nocturian.
"What happened?" his brother appeared at his side.
"She went into Svitanik." Aerdan snappped, "But I
think her release from the caves was too sudden."
Together the two Andorans lifted the limp figure onto
a biobed.
-[/\]-
Scene: Observation Room: Outside Sickbay
T'nnent stood on the far side of the window. His
black eyes staring fixedly on the pale pink skin of
his counterpart. Her tattoo starkly marking her skin.
Numerous medical personnel surrounding the biobed,
all busy trying to stabilize the Captain.
Memories of the two of them as children flooded his
mind, together with memories of their time together
amongst the stars.
He moved to the far side of the room, suddenly
restless. "I need air."
"You stay here young man." Mya snapped.
"I cannot." T'nnent stared at the older woman, "I
cannot watch her drift away from me."
"They will do everything that they can for her." Mya
moved to his side. "Soon they will let us sit with
her."
"Through the dark watches of the night?" T'nnent
closed his eyes. "And on through to the new dawn?"
"If we have to yes." Mya fought for control. S/he
took several calming breaths, "I do not believe that
Rharn will die from this."
"But you cannot say for certain." T'nnent rounded on
the older Nocturian. His golden hair writhing around
his head.
"No I cannot, but then if you had not allowed yourself
to be distracted by the other worlders."
"I...." He bowed his head and pressed his forehead
against the cool glass. "I...." He sighed, "I can
only apologise."
"You are apologising to the wrong Alcedo child." Mya
touched his shoulder, "Now we must have patience."
-[/\]-
Time index: Several hours later
T'nnent was sitting, apparently silently, next to
Rharn. Her still pale hand clasped in his, his black
eyes never moving from her face. Aerdan had heard the
soft words with his acute hearing but stepped
backwards to give the two NOCTURIANS some privacy.
Softly T'nnent sang, in the higher reaches of the
NOCTURIAN voice, a ballad that had been handed down
through many generations of Pleos.
"There's a ship out on the ocean,
At the mercy of the sea.
It's been tossed about, lost and broken
Wandering aimlessly.
And God, somehow, You know
That ship is me."
"Because there was a lighthouse in a harbour,
Shining faithfully,
Pouring its light out, across the water,
For this sinking soul to see.
That someone out there still believes in me."
He ifted a hand and gently stroked her blue hair back
behind her ear.
"On a prayer, in a song,
I heard your voice and it kept me hanging on.
Ohhhh, raining down, against the wind,
I'm reaching out,
Until we reach the cirlces end,
When you come back to me again."
"There's a moment, that we all come to,
In our own time, in our own space,
Were all that we've done, we can undo
If our hearts in the right place."
"On a prayer, in a song,
I hear your voice, and it keeps me hanging on.
Ohhhh, raining down, against the wind,
I'm reaching out,
Till we reach the cirlces end,
When you come back to me again."
"Again and again I see,
My yesterdays in front of me,
Unfolding like a mystery,
You're changing all that is and used to be."
"On a prayer, in a song,
I hear your voice, and it keeps me hanging on.
Ohhhh, raining down, against the wind,
I'm reaching out, till we reach the cirlces end,
When you come back to me again."
"Please, come back to me again." He bent his head, so
that his lips rested against the back of her hand,
ignorning the tears that streaked down his cheeks.
Slowly Rharn squeezed his fingers.
Aerdan appeared as if by magic and quickly checked all
of her readings. Turning he nodded at the green
skinned man. "She'll be fine. She just needs to
rest."
"Are you sure?" T'nnent asked.
"Perfectly." Aerdan double checked the readings, "Her
vital signs are stabilising and growing stronger."
"Good."
"How adverse a reaction could she have had from coming
out of Svitanik so suddenly?" Aerdan asked.
"She could have died." T'nnent blinked his large
black eyes, "It depends on what she went into Svitanik
for and if it worked."
"So you are trying to tell me that there could be
complications?"
"Possibly." T'nnent semi shrugged, "Most people just
emerge and that is the end of the matter. Mya may
know more."
"I'll speak with her then." Aerdan glanced up at the
reading above the bed, "You can have another five
minutes with her, then you go rest."
"Yes Doctor."
-[/\]-
Time Index: The Following Evening
Mya appeared at Rharn's bedside. The older Nocturian
pleased to see Rharn looking more like her normal
self. "T'nnent wishes to speak with you, child."
Rharn blinked, "Why now?" She stared at Mya, "Have
you been speaking with him?"
"No. Coming so close to loosing you made him aware of
how much he cared for you."
Rharn snorted, "Right."
"Perhaps he is not as self-centered as you believe?"
Mya suggested sofly.
Rharn stared hard at her Guardian, "If you say so."
"Do you not remember last night?"
"Not really." Rharn shrugged. "I remember coming out
of the Svitanik and then nothing till this morning."
"Well he waited beside you all night."
The younger Alcedo squashed down the flash of hope
that blazed through her heart. "I...."
"He made a mistake Child. Can you not forgive him?"
Mya asked softly.
"Perhaps."
"Here." Mya offered a simple sapphire blue dress with
spaghetti straps, in soft folds it fell across the
bed, sapphires and silver crystals were sown across
the bodice and down across the front of the skirt.
"He wants to speak to you somewhere special."
"You know that this is my first proper gown?" Rharn
gently fingered the material.
"I thought so." Mya smiled softly, "I had Phia and
Izzy help with the design. Will you wear it?"
"Yes. At some point." Rharn rose slowly to her feet,
and caught the look on Mya's face. "Oh. I suppose
you wish me to wear this to see T'nnent?"
"Of course." Mya smiled, "He has spent serveral
hours with both Peter and Ronnie this afternoon
getting everything just right."
Rharn quickly swapped her medical gown for the
beautiful dress. She went to tie her hair back but
Mya removed her hands from the electric tresses,
"Leave them loose child."
-[/\]-
Scene: Holodeck 1
T'nnent paced back and forth. His tunic was a deep
emerald green with pale green embroidery down the
right side. This topped deep almost black trousers.
His pale green toes peeked out from beneath the hem of
the trousers.
"You should have worn shoes." Peter offered.
"No." T'nnent shook his head, "No, we prefer to go
barefoot, it enables us to make good our escape." He
smirked. "She's late."
"Females privilidge." The British man offered, he
finished tapping in a few more codes. "Ok, you will
both be able to float, all you have to do is remove
the gravity controls. It will only effect this
holodeck."
"Thank you for your help."
"My pleasure. But you mess around with our Captain's
head one more time and so help me I will personnally
see that you are dumped at the nearest starport.
Whether reputible or not."
"Yes sir." T'nnent smiled, "My thanks, again."
"What can I say, I love romance." Peter grinned,
"Good luck. I think you are going to need it"
As Peter turned to leave the doors swooshed open.
"Wow." Peter winked, "You look lovely Captain if I
may say so."
"My thanks." Rharn felt her skin heat with the blush
taht blazed across her body.
"Mya would you accompany me for a drink?" The ExO of
the STONEHENGE asked softly, "I believe that our work
here may be done?"
"I would love to Mr Aspinall." Mya linked heris arm
through Peter's offered one, "And perhaps you could
teach T'nnent some of your divine manners."
Their conversation faded as the doors slid closed
behind them. Rharn turned to face T'nnent.
"Why did you risk your life?" He asked softly as he
stepped gracefully across the space that seperated
them.
"I had to get something out of my system?"
"Something or someone?" He asked softly, stopping
just within touching distance. "No lies Rharny."
"Someone." She admitted and looked into his black
eyes, "Someone that needs his freedom."
"I...." He shook his head, "I have had to do some
re-adjustments. Your life took me by surprise.
Though it should not have. You always did go out for
what you believed in." He paused, "Can you forgive
me?" He held out his hand, and his breath. "Can we
try again?"
Rharn searched his face, finally she nodded and placed
her hand into his, "It was not all your fault."
"We have forgotten how to sing, together." He sighed.
"We have been apart for so long," She smiled, "It
would be hard for us to try...."
"Perhaps. I hear you singing all the time." He
tipped his head slightly to one side, his golden hair
falling over his shoulder, "Even when you think that
no-one is around."
"Being NOCTURIAN has it's advantages." Rharn grinned,
"No-one else can hear me."
"Will you walk with me?" He asked softly.
"Of course."
He linked their fingers together and stepped forward,
"There is so much we need to learn about each other."
"We have time. I believe the Humans call it dating."
"Dating?" T'nnent tried the word out, "And what does
one do on a date?"
"Spends time getting to know one another. I believe
there could be food and drink could involved somewhere
as well." She smiled up at him and let him help her
over the branches of a fallen tree, "Where are we?"
"I am not sure." His face darkened slightly, "Peter
helped to design this world for us. He said it was
one of the most romantic places he could think of, and
all we have to do is turn this corner."
"Oh..." Rharn's breath whoosed out in a sigh, "Oh how
lovely." They found themselves on a headland that
jutted out over a forest. But it was the view itself
that was breath-taking.
The night sky was laid out before them, like a vast
painting. Faint lights flickered low across the
skyline. "I wonder where this is?" She whispered.
"I do not know, but I am going to ask him." T'nnent
stepped up behind her and wrapped his arms around her
waist, "I think the appropriate thing for me now is to
ask you on a date."
"That is the way the humans do do things?" Rharn
teased gently. "Perhaps it is time for us to try out
some of their customs."
"I believe so. I have had an afternoon of lessons on
what to do...." He sounded amused. Suddenly he
stilled, "Now I know what Peter was getting at." He
stepped around her, "Do you trust me?"
"Of course." Rharn looked faintly puzzled.
"Good." He took a breath and then quickly uttered a
command under his breath. Then taking hold of Rharn's
hand he stepped off the end of the headland, his voice
holding her attention.
"You light the skies, up above me,
A star, so bright, you blind me." He sang softly as
he led them further across the sky. He stopped once
they were surrounded by stars, and then softly smiled.
"Hey Don't close your eyes,
Don't fade away, don't fade away,"
"Yeah you and me we can ride on a star,
If you stay with me girl,
We can rule the world!
Yeah you and me we can light up the sky,
If you stay by my side,
We can rule the world." He stepped closer and closer.
"If walls break down, I will comfort you,
If angels cry, oh, I'll be there for you,
You've saved my soul,
Don't leave me now,
Don't leave me now." He wrapped his arms around her
and slowly started to dance with her in the middle of
the sky.
"Yeah you and me we can ride on a star,
If you stay with me girl,
We can rule the world!
Yeah you and me, we can light up the sky,
If you stay by my side,
We can rule the world!"
"Look all the stars are coming out tonight,
They're lighting up the sky tonight,
For you, for you.
All the stars are coming out tonight,
They're lighting up the sky tonight,
For you, for you."
"Yeah you and me we can ride on a star,
If you stay with me girl,
We can rule the world!
Yeah you and me, we can light up the sky,
If you stay by my side,
We can rule the world!"
Rharn's voice softly joined with T'nnents,
"All the stars are coming out tonight,
They're lighting up the sky tonight,
For you, for you.
All the stars are coming out tonight,
They're lighting up the sky tonight,
For you, for you."
The two Nocturians stood surrounded by starlight.
Rharn rested her head against T'nnent's shoulder.
Under her ear she could hear the steady beat of his
heart. Finally she felt as if she had come home.
-[/\]-
Scene: CO's Quarters
Rharn glided into her quarters, the beautiful blue
dress floating about her body. Her long blue hair
also floating about her head. Bast leapt up to her
shoulder and gently Rharn rubbed his eye ridges.
Softly she hummed under her breath and danced around
her room.
Suddenly she spotted her reflection in her long mirror
and paused, "Is that really me?"
//Of course it is you.// Bast paused, //You seem
different.//
"I feel different." Rharn shimmied out of her
wonderful gown and slipped a robe around her shoulders
as she headed for her bathroom.
A quick shower and sitting in her trousers and vest
top, Rharn was seated in front of her mirror a brush
in her hand. "You know Bast, I do not know why I was
frightened. I mean I know my way around here. The
The corridors, the jeffries tubes, all the sound
here."
She paused as she started to braid her hair.
"Like a world to rediscover, but I am not in any
hurry. And I need a moment." Braids were twisted and
clipped to her head. Slipping her feet into her boots
and shrugging into her jacket she stepped out of her
quarters and out into the corridors.
"The whispered conversations in overcrowded hallways,
The atmosphere as thrilling here as always." She
nodded at a crew member that she passed, "I feel the
early morning madness, feel the magic in the making.
Why everything’s as if we never said goodbye."
"I have spent so many mornings, just trying to resist
you. I am trembling now. He cannot know how much I
have missed him."
She stepped into the small florist on the boulevard.
"A single green rose please, and also a dozen red
ones, plus that black and silver display." She
ordered her purchases. "Have them delivered and I
will take the display." So saying Rharn stepped back
out onto the promenade and headed for the Bridge.
"Missed the fairy-tail adventures, in this
ever-spinning playground. We were young together. And
the early morning madness, and the magic in the
making." Carefully she placed the display in front of
Peter's door a simple note with one word was carefully
inserted into the display.
"Yes, everything is as if we had never said goodbye."
She took the few steps to her Ready Room and slipped
inside. "I do not want to be alone. But that is all
in the past. This world’s waited long enough, I have
come home at last!"
"And this time will be bigger, and brighter than we
knew it. So watch me fly, we all know I can do it...
Could I stop my hand from shaking? Has there ever been
a moment with so much to live for?"
Rharn stared out across the vastness of space, "The
whispered conversations in overcrowded hallways. So
much to say not just today but always. We will have
early morning madness. We will have magic in the
making. Yes, everything is as if we never said
goodbye."
An image of T'nnent appeared before her mind's eye,
"Oh, please don’t ever ever make me say goodbye!"
The door chime pulled her from her thought's, "Come."
Pol'gra stood in the doorway, "I have the first of
today's reports Rharn if you are ready."
"As always." Rharn smiled, "Will you join me for
breakfast, it will give Peter time to join us?"
"I would be happy to have a cup of tea whilst you
break your fast." Pol'gra smiled in return, "If that
is alright?"
"Of course."
