"Loved Ones and New Years"

Con't from Nai's "Rock Bottom"

========

Location: ESPERION

Stardate: 2422 [2.7] 0101.1557

Scene: Palthainon Compound

Daniel was standing at one of the doorways that led into and out of the
compound that housed Palthainon and his staff. He was staring out at the
horizon as the sun began its downward spiral that would eventually take it
past the horizon. Right now the sky was crisscrossed with shades of orange
and yellow, and the site itself was breathtaking to the young marine.

"Cath would have loved to see this," he murmured to himself as he continued
staring at the receding sun. For the first time, he began to wonder if
things were going to work - not with the marriage, he was supremely
confident about that - but he'd already given the Esperion security guards
instructions to improve the security to as good as it would get on such
short notice, and with Harris attaching himself to Palthainon, Clarkson was
alone with his thoughts, and when that happened they tended to wander.

Right now, he was thinking about Catherine - about the wedding, and about
her reaction to him going on an away team without her. He began to wonder
if there was a better way - maybe a way they could both land positions
closer to EARTH.

Then he shook his head - they'd both go stir crazy, Catherine in particular.
Besides, she was bound to Starfleet Intelligence for the next twenty years,
which didn't give either of them a whole lot of choice.

"The compound's locked down for the night," Daniel looked over as Harris
came up beside him, leaning against the other side of the extra large
doorjamb. "There are two guards stationed outside the Priest's quarters,
and one actually in there with him - the chamber is large enough that they
won't greatly disturb his privacy."

"Good work Lieutenant," Daniel said, before directing his gaze back out at
the sunset.

"Is everything okay sir?" Harris asked, after a few minutes of silence had
passed between the two Starfleet officers.

"Yeah," Daniel nodded, smiling faintly. "Just thinking about my wife."

"Ah, I see sir," Harris replied. He knew that Daniel had only been married
for a short time, and guessed that he'd probably much rather be with
Catherine right now.

"You know," Harris said, a thought having occurred to him. "It's almost the
New Year, and we have that visual uplink with us - you could always call
her."

Daniel perked up considerably at that suggestion. "You know," he said
softly. "That is not a bad idea."

Time Index: 15 minutes later

Scene: Private Room

"I hope this works," the marine muttered to himself, as he patched the link
through and waited patiently while the comm. links were connected.
Presently he was glad to see image on the screen be replaced by the face of
his wife, but that feeling was quickly replaced by a sheepish one as he
noticed she was wearing her robe.

"I'm sorry," he said embarrassedly. "I didn't think you'd be asleep."

{{I wasn't,}} she replied with a smile, happy that Daniel had called. {{I
was in bed reading.  How are you?  How's the mission going?}}

"It's boring," he replied honestly, returning the smile. "I'd much rather
be up there with you."

Catherine's smile grew, and her cheeks reddened slightly at the compliment.
{{I've been listening to all the communications going back and forth,}} she
said.  {{It doesn't look like anything's happened yet.}}

"Well, even if this group is responsible for the first two deaths," Daniel
said. "According to the pattern we shouldn't expect anything to happen for
another few hours yet."

They continued talking back and forth for the next twenty minutes, until
Daniel noticed the chronometer on the communicator, which was synchronized
to the time on the PATRIOT.

"It's almost midnight," he said with a smile. They kept on talking, and one
by one the seconds ticked by until the chronometer read 0000, January 1st
2422.

Daniel smiled again, touching two fingers to his lips, and then to the
screen. "Happy New Year Cath," he said. "I love you so much."
