"Berth"
continued from
"Back to Nature"

Location: USS PATRIOT
Stardate: 2.70311.1624
Scene: Bridge

The Patriot slid out of warp, and the viewscreen was filled with the
familiar shape of SB1, hovering protectively in front of EARTH. No
matter how many times he saw it, Ben still thought it was one of the
most beautiful visions he'd encountered in 8 years of trekking
through the stars.

"Initiate docking protocol, Mr. Soldat." He said formally.

"Yes, Sir, requesting permission to dock." Came the reply from the
tactical station. "SB1 sends we are cleared for docking in port 17."

"Helm, bring us about to coordinates zero-four-nine point four, and
proceed at one quarter impulse"

"Aye, sir," Russ replied, already tapping at his console, deftly
maneuvering the ships bulk into position for docking.

The Starbase on the viewer grew steadily larger, slowly drowning out
the blue and white brilliance behind it. Ben looked at the other
ships on the ring as they passed. A Legend class, an old Nova, a
Sanctity, and a pair of Wanderers.

"Coming up on dock seventeen. Positioning indicators active." Cal
announced from operations.

"Impulse offline, maneuvering thrusters engaged." Russ added.

Slowly PATRIOT crawled into the encircling framework of the dock. A
repeating ping informed them how close they were to the station wall.
It cycled faster and faster until it became constant, and Russ
brought 572 meters of starship to a graceful stop, cradled in the
arms of the starbase.

"The station's umbilical is attached." Cindy called from the
engineering station. "I'm powering down ship systems. We're now
running on station power."

Ben let out a breath he never could stop himself from holding during
the final part of docking. "Inform the crew that we've docked.
Shoreleave starts now." He stood up himself before turning back to
Cindy. "Make sure to coordinate with the Station's chief engineer
before you take off."

"It's the first thing on my list." The senor array hadn't given out
during the mission, but the stress they'd put on it left the system
out of alignment, and running at significantly less than peak
efficiency. The PATRIOT's engineering staff could make the needed
adjustments by themselves in the field in a few weeks, but while in
dock, with help from the stations crew the job could be done in half
the time or less.

"Very good. You're all dismissed."

NRPG: The Prophecy's crew is on Earth/SB1 right now too, and since
its our regular berth, I figured I'd give us a chance to run into old
friends if anyone is interested. It won't be a formal joint
shoreleave, but if you'd like to write with anyone from that crew,
just make sure to indicate the post should be put in both archives.

Rahul/Naomi: I left it unsaid weather you guys came with the ship, or
if we left you behind with a shuttle, so you can do whatever you want.
