“Lieutenant Kathryn MacNeil’s Deposition” (contd from Erik’s ‘Scratching the Old Paint, Part II’) Location: San Francisco, EARTH SD: 2.70322.1907 Scene: Starfleet Command Kathryn MacNeil stared intently with nervousness at Commander Rennerman as the older officer was rummaging through his notes, deliberately in an attempt to slightly rattle the doctor’s cage. The Scot took in a deep breath, remembering the conversation with Daisy just before the deposition. **It should be fine, as long as I stick to answering the way Daisy prepped me to, ** the half-Nuimon thought, trying to reassure herself. A sound of throat clearing was heard. Rennerman began, giving a rather awkward smile. “Well, Lt. MacNeil, we shall begin your debriefing.” He was responded by a polite nod from the six feet tall woman. He glanced at his notes briefly before returning his attention back to the young doctor. Rennerman requested, politely. “Dr. MacNeil, please give me a brief account of your experiences during the crisis on ANDALUSIA VII.” Kathryn looked bewildered by the request and questioned. “Sir, why do you want me to provide details when they’re already in an official report?” “I didn’t ask you to give details on the actual events,” the Commander clarified, hoping the Scottish woman would not be too difficult like the PROPHECY ExO. “I was interested in your personal take on the situation, like what were you thinking, feeling and so on.” He took note of the look of discomfort radiating from Kate’s face. Kate sighed inwardly, not wanting to recall her ordeal and feel the pain all over again, but the CMO had no choice and just resigned herself to complying with Rennerman’s request. “When the holosuites got locked down, I felt concerned…like how one would be if they were stuck in a turbolift.” The doctor nearly swallowed a lump, knowing she was not telling Rennerman everything. The half-Nuimon was not ready to give up details like the betrayal she felt upon mistaking the hologram version of Aerdan Jos to be real. “So, you were hopeful of getting out, eventually?” MacNeil nodded. “Yes. Initially I thought it was just a problem and was hopeful the Engineers would be able to solve it, thereby getting us out.” “But that didn’t end up being the case, wasn’t it?” Rennermen looked sadly at her as he continued. “I mean you couldn’t have anticipated Borg nannites being injected into the system, leading to the creation of the rogue Borg collective.” “No sir,” Kate simply answered, when a dark feeling enveloped her. The doctor gulped, hoping she would not have to bring those painful memories to the forefront. **I can do this, ** she kept reassuring herself. **All I need to do is answer his questions and leave. ** She tried to be brave, though deep down the young woman was already on thin ice, ready to break at the first sign of trouble. She waited anxiously for Rennermen’s next query. The Commander posed the next question, his tone quite unemotional. “What were your thoughts at time of your assimilation?” The Scot’s heart sank, having dreaded that one particular question. At that moment, memories of the horror and pain from the assimilation flowed into her mind like waves smashing against rocks during a thunderstorm. ----------- Location: ANDALUSIA VII SD: 2.70111.1628 Scene: Holosuite TI: Flashback from my post ‘Scared like a Rabbit’ Suddenly the Scot heard a chorus of monotone voices that chilled her to the bone. Kate slowly glanced behind her and became horrified at the sight facing her. A group of hundred drones were marching towards her. “Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.” Kathryn was panting and glanced around, searching for a way to escape. Spotting a dock with boats everywhere, the Scottish woman immediately went into a sprint, not knowing what her next move was. The Borg collective continued to follow her. She could still hear the standard Borg mantra. “Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated,” the collective voices continued. Tears began falling from the doctor’s glowing blue eyes, when she realized her comrades could be part of the collective chasing her. She was nearing the edge of the docks and made a decision to take a plunge into the waters of the holographic version of Cardiff Bay. Feeling confident of her swimming skills, Kate dived into the water before the collective reached her. After swimming underwater a few feet away from the docks, the CMO popped above for some air. Kate shivered due to the cold air and was wet from head to toe. She gave a huge sigh of relief upon having escaped the collective and wondered about her next step. The doctor knew she could not return back to the docks. **Maybe take one of the boats…** MacNeil’s train of thoughts was interrupted, when something under the bay waters grabbed her foot and began pulling her under. A look of horror shown on her face, when Borg implants grew all over hand. Her escape attempts failed. She was being assimilated. ----------- Location: EARTH Scene: Starfleet Command TI: Present “Dr. MacNeil.” Kate got brought down from her thoughts by the voice of Commander Rennerman and the hybrid realized it had been a little over five minutes since he asked the question. It was obvious to everyone how shaken up she was. MacNeil touched her hair, feeling beads of cold sweat running down her cheek. Her breathing rate elevated slightly and she could her heart pounding against the chest wall rather hard. Rennerman watched with great interest at how his query rattled the young woman and got her exactly where he wanted. He noticed the Scot glance over her shoulder towards Aerdan Jos, who was seated in the audience, watching the debriefing with a look of concern in his eyes. “Well, doctor,” the Commander casually stated, gazing intently into the woman’s blue eyes. Kate took a quick moment to straighten her uniform before replying slowly, trying to sound calm and composed. “It was a painful moment, sir…one that I would like to forget altogether.” “Oh I’m sure it was,” Rennerman stated, pretending to sound sympathetic. “Everyone here can understand the ordeal you’ve gone through. We all know it is tough to sit here, relating those horrific events.” Daisy Byrne, seated in between Lynette Ryan and Aerdan, narrowed her eyes towards the commander. The blonde thought with disgust. **Oh please, you’re trying to break her down. ** She sighed inwardly, watching the CMO with worry and hoped. **You can do this, Kate. Don’t give into him. ** “You must now be grateful for the creation of the virus by Dr. Jos and Cmdr. Aspinall.” Rennerman kept on with his pretense. “And relieved to be back in your own skin.” He gave a wry smile, as Kathryn nodded slowly, still looking shaken up. Kate gulped, remembering the pain just after waking up in the hospital. The young Human/Nuimon woman still could not forget the shame and the anger felt at that time. “Yes I…am grateful to be back to myself,” the doctor said, quietly, once again glancing behind at the newly minted Andorian CSciO. Rennerman clasped his hands on the table and declared to the audience, with a soft smile. “I think it’s now time to move on to the next part of the agenda in this de-briefing.” He went through some PADDs and took his time on purpose to make Kate even more nervous…enough to slip. The Commander cleared his throat before bringing up the next question. “You served with Lt. Ronnie Zanders on the GATEWAY, is that correct?” “Yes,” Kate confirmed, wondering what Ronnie and the GATEWAY had got to do with the de-briefing. “And you got on well with her, if I am not mistaken?” The PROPHECY CMO nodded. “That is correct.” Rennerman remarked, using a rather patronizing tone. “I am assuming it must have shocked…in fact angered you over Lt. Zanders’ actions in injecting the nannites into the system…in turn leading to your assimilation.” He paused for a moment, noting the colour drain from the doctor’s face. “What is your relationship with her like now?” Kate shrugged, slowly becoming irate at Rennerman’s line of questioning. “I did not get the chance to see her after my assimilation was reversed. She was taken away before I could have the opportunity.” “Pity,” the Commander commented. “I would have been interested to know how angry you were feeling towards…” MacNeil interjected, fuming. “With all due respect, *sir*. I do not bear any ill-feelings towards Ron…Lt. Zanders over her involvement in this…” “What do you know about the ship called the PROPHECY bringing Lt. Zanders into our dimension?” Rennerman rudely cut her off with another question. Kate replied, icily. “I do not know of any prophecy concerning Lt. Zanders.” “So you’re denying the existence of the PROPHECY?” Rennerman sternly inquired. The CMO answered, her blood boiling. “I will say it again, Commander. I am not aware of any prophecy referring to Lt. Zanders.” She sighed inwardly, clearly irritated. Becoming slightly cheeky, Kate suggested, her Scottish accent becoming thicker. “Perhaps, you can enlighten everyone in the room about this prophecy you’re talking about and whether you heard it from an oracle or some old crone from the isles like in the folktales.” At the comment, some of the members of the audience giggled. Daisy gave a thumbs up at her CMO, clearly riling the Commander conducting the de-briefing. Rennerman bristled, glaring at the young woman. “Are you being funny with me, Lieutenant?” He warned, anger brewing inside him. “This is a very serious matter and I can get you arrested for insubordination and refusing to cooperate.” Kate responded, sounding polite yet firm. “With all due respect, *sir*, I’d like to point out that you don’t have the grounds to do that to me.” “And why not?” Rennerman asked, coolly. The Scot replied, flatly. “Sir, I’m under strict orders to only answer questions pertaining to the events at ANDALUSIA VII and nothing else.” Rennerman sighed, knowing he was going nowhere with the half-Nuimon and instead announced, dryly. “Alright, Lieutenant. We’re done here. Dismissed.” Kate sighed with relief and got up from her seat. As she turned around to head to the audience, Rennerman warned her from behind. “I’m not finished with you, yet, doctor.” ************************************************************************ NRPG: Here is Kate’s deposition :) Kim: A post from me finally ;) Jamie: Congratulations on your promotions and award :) Ranjani Sabarinathan Speaking for...
