"Finding Her Place" (Cont. from "Scratching At the Old Paint, Part II") ------------------------------------------------------------- Location: USS Patriot Stardate: 2.70323.1341 Scene: Marine Deck Tam was amused at the Marine that was now sucking at the burn on his hand. "That won't help it," she offered, opening the medkit. "I know. But I think you'd prefer silence to swearing." "I never said that." She slipped into her nurse mode, gently but determinedly pulling his hand away and holding it still while she ran the dermal regenerator over it. After a moment, the raw pink skin was replaced by a fresh new layer of epidermis. "There, you'll be fine. Just avoid shocking yourself again." "Thanks." He bent down to pick up the scattered pieces of rifle, asking as he did, "So you're the new counselor? The captain sent out a message that you were coming onboard here." "Yes, I'm serving here until Starfleet sees otherwise." She gathered up some of the more far-flung shards and passed them to him. "I'm glad I found someone onboard. There seem to be few people here even for a skeleton crew. Even the captain's gone for shore leave." "Well, I'm stuck here until I get a relief, so feel free to stop by to socialize." Samuels stood, dumping the chunks into what appeared to be an in-box on the desk. "Thank you for the help. Just... don't mention this mess to anyone, okay? I'd rather not let my boss know unless I have to." She permitted herself a small smile. "Our secret." ----------------------------------------------------------- Scene: Counselor's Office Tam waited outside the door for a moment before asking the computer to let her into her new office. She felt like there should be some moment of ceremony prior to her setting up, but with no one else there... The ship felt large and empty, but she knew that was just the effect of the crew being away on shoreleave. Soon enough everyone would return and the corridors would be filled with life. She felt silly at letting her thoughts run like that, though, and stepped inside the office. It was... small. Serviceable, and designed to be intimate, but still small. A desk and two chairs, a small sofa, and a few shelves. The computer on the desk lit up at her entrance, with a soft "beep." She was still happy at having her own office, though; on the EXPLORER she'd been forced to share quarters and had no office beyond sickbay. There were advantages to being a senior officer. She looked forward to arranging the office and quarters to her satisfaction. That reminded her: she needed to pick up a couple of packages that had been shipped as cargo. She hadn't been able to carry them on the shuttle with her, and wanted them for her quarters, so she and her dormmate had packed them separately. It wasn't much-- some knickknacks, a few paintings, books and art supplies and the like-- but she wanted them around, to make it feel more like home. It would be strange without someone else around, though. She had gotten along with her dormmate at the ACT, a young (for a Vulcan) woman named T'ial, and had hoped that they would be posted to the same ship, but that hadn't happened. She focused on what she had to do now, avoiding thought of people that she'd like along. She had to go back out onto SB1, locate the shipping center, and get her boxes. This time she would not get turned around-- something that she blamed on the little sleep she'd had since finishing the ACT. She'd looked over the specs for both SB1 and the PATRIOT, so there was no real excuse for going into a restricted section or getting off on the wrong deck. With any luck, she could even avoid that horrendous Tellah Cal and get some sleep when she returned to the ship. Maybe she could even ask Samuels or another crewmember to help her bring the cartons aboard... ------------------------------------------------------------- NRPG: There, my intro of Tam to everyone. Hi, by the way, and I'm really looking forward to writing with you! Alix's been chatting you all up, so I'm expecting good things. :) Rahul: No, not minding you using Tam at all! Actually, I'm glad you had her meeting someone, especially one who seems... interesting? Bethany B. Tam Niala Counselor USS PATRIOT --------------------------------- Don't be flakey. Get Yahoo!
