The Opera Theatre is a proscenium arch lyric theatre
with an orchestra pit accommodating up to 70 musicians.
The three companies which present annual programs in
the Opera Theatre are Opera Australia, The Australian
Ballet and Sydney Dance Company. It is most suitable
for opera, ballet and contemporary dance.

Kate and Aerdan were standing at the entrance when
an employee of the opera house approached them.

"Are you Dr. Jos, sir?"

"I am." Aerdan paused.

"Admiral Ranta is in the gentleman's facilities and
he's not feeling well. We keep a physician on staff,
but the Admiral insisted we come retrieve you."

Kate paused. "I should come with you."

Aerdan found himself smiling a little as he teased,
"Into the Gentleman's facilities?"

"Well, I am a doctor." Kate blushed slightly.

Aerdan shook his head and turned his attention back
to the theater attendant. "If I could borrow your
physician's medical kit? I wasn't expecting to
see a patient tonight."

"Of course, the doctor is waiting for you outside
the..."

  "The Gentleman's facilities..." Aerdan finished.
"Yes, I saw where they were as we approached the
theater. Thank you. Please escort Dr. MacNeil to
our seats?"

Kate smiled politely as the attendant offered
her his arm. Then, she shot Aerdan a look over
her shoulder.

"I'm sure he's fine...." Aerdan promised weakly.
"Just nerves now that you-know-who has returned..."

"What's up, Maddie?" Daisy asked.

"Thanks for coming out here so we can talk alone."
The half-Vulcan Captain smiled. "Sorry to have
to take you away from Cade...."

Daisy blinked awkwardly for a second, then smiled.

"The staff of the opera house will probably be
tossing him out on his ear any minute now anyway.
Since he wasn't that thrilled about a night at the
opera, he smuggled in a straw and a napkin from
the concession stand...."

"Oh, god..." Maddie groaned. "Spitballs again?"

Daisy nodded patiently. "The orchestra is trying
to warm up their instruments and, every now and
then...there's a faint "ping" of something hitting
the rim of the tuba. And when this lovely
Betazoid aristocrat notices the tiny wads of wet
napkin in her hair..."

Maddie laughed, cutting her off, and asked.

"Why does he do these things?"

"He's crazy." Daisy shrugged. "Makes me laugh,
though...reminds me a little of a Marine I used
to serve with..."

"He's crazy?" Maddie teased. "That's not very
politically correct of you. I mean, is that
your technical diagnosis of our civilian
consultant? That he's simply 'crazy?"

Daisy laughed weakly and shrugged. Then,
Maddie changed the subject. "Anyway...I wanted
to ask you about Harper....we bumped into each
other on the way here and we had the most
bizarre conversation...."

Daisy stood up and sighed. "I wish you wouldn't
ask me about this..."

Maddie blinked. "Ok, now I'm intrigued. What's
going on? He was acting so strangely...nervous
and asking if Ty and I were thinking about having
more children..."

The color drained from Daisy's face a bit and
she asked nervously. "And what did you say?"

"I said no." Maddie replied innocently. "Ty and
I thought about having more kids - but we thought
we'd wait until Rosie is older - out of diapers."

Daisy rolled her eyes and groaned, frustrated.
"Dammit, Maddie! How could you do that? Where's
Harper now? I have to find him, make sure he's
ok..."

Completely baffled, Maddie jumped to her feet
and grabbed Daisy's arm.

"Why wouldn't he be ok? And why would he care
we want to wait before having more kids?"

"I can't tell you that." Daisy stammered
awkwardly.

"What?!" Maddie asked, confused. "Why? He's
ordered you to keep something from me? You
aren't making any sense! "

"He didn't have to." Daisy corrected her,
sounding surprisingly annoyed. "Standing
regulations concerning Doctor-patient privelage
prevent me from telling you what you want
to know...."

The half-Vulcan narrowed her eyes and then scoffed.
"You are making no sense. You were fine until
I mentioned Harper and now you're all defensive
and almost pissed at me." Daisy groaned and
looked away awkwardly as Maddie asked, "How
does Harper being upset I don't want more
kids right now lead to him having some kind
of medical issue that you can't discuss with me?"

Daisy raised her voice a bit, sounding obviously
frustrated. "If I could tell you, I would! Go
talk to him!"

  Stepping back, absolutely furious...Maddie
practically had steam going out her pointed ears
as she laughed and replied.

   "Oh, believe me! I will!"

It took only a few minutes for Aerdan to give the
Admiral something to settle his stomach and calm
his nerves. Harper washed his face and then sat
on some of the modest furniture provided for men
waiting to use the facilities.

"I have to leave, Dr. Jos..." Harper began
slowly.

"You said you'd tell her what happened after she
came back from her holiday...." Aerdan chided him.

"I thought it would be easier..." explained the
Admiral. "I thought if she was happy and looked
rested....I would feel better laying this on her..."

Harper's hand went to his upper stomach. He sighed
awkwardly.

"She flat-out told me she and Ty don't want more
children yet...and I can't hand this little guy
over to a mother who doesn't want him..." the
pregnant man got a little choked up.

  "He's not my child biologically - I know. I know I'm only
the host. But I've grown to love him. I've
sat up at night using that scanner you gave me
and just listened to his little heart beating
for hours..."

Aerdan smiled patiently. "Captain Zanders has
a huge heart. If she knew about this child, she
would love him immediately, too."

"What if you're wrong?" Harper worried. "This
was an accident. Neither of us had any clue
what those Crystals were and what we were doing
when we touched them. And what about Ty? What
if this is a problem for them?"

Aerdan sat calmly next to the Admiral and sighed.

"I don't know the Captain's fiance very well.
I have to admit that. But, I'm confident the man
is smart enough to know that there is no sort of
sexual contact between you and Maddie would have
resulted in your becoming pregnant with Maddie's
child. This was clearly a laboratory accident
and not infidelity - so why would Ty be upset with
Maddie?"

"I can't do this to her." Harper groaned. "I
thought I could. Once she got her family back
on track and had time to recover from what happened
on ANDALUSIA....but, I can't do it. I have to
just leave...I'll retire. I'll go away and raise
the baby with my son....she and Ty will be happy
with the kids they already have..."

"That's not the honorable thing to do, sir."
Aerdan chided him. "This child is her flesh
and blood. You have to tell her it exists."

"No." Harper stood up and squared his shoulders.

"I can go away and have this baby quietly. She
doesn't have to know..."

Aerdan stood up and faced the Admiral, struggling
to control his temper. "Sir, I can't let you do
that to her..."

They were both startled by the doors whooshing open
and Maddie appearing. She looked somewhat
disheveled.

  Aerdan blinked, surprised.

Harper turned away nervously, then gave her
an awkward smile.

"You realize you are in the men's room, Captain
Zanders?"

She squared her shoulders and gave him a grim,
determined look.

"I don't care. What's going on with you?"

Harper lowered his eyes and shoved his hands
in his pockets acting almost like her son when
he'd been cought in a lie or doing something
wrong. Finally, he stammered weakly.

  "I'm fine."

Aerdan groaned loudly and twirled himself around,
obviously annoyed and Maddie's eyes widened as
she saw how frustrated Aerdan was.

She gave Harper a hurt look and said, "Dammit,
I thought we were friends!"

Harper grimaced awkwardly. "We are friends,
Maddie. I adore you. You know that."

"Then why are you shutting me out?" She demanded.
"I'm not stupid and I can see that something's
wrong. Daisy, Aerdan and Kate - they won't breech
your privacy. I get the same feeling around them,
though - something is wrong with you and it's my
fault. I don't understand!"

A complete stranger walked in - innocently hoping
to use the men's room. He saw a woman standing
there with two men and then Maddie snarled at him.

"Get out."

The Bajoran blinked awkwardly. "I just wanted to
use the..."

Aerdan chuckled weakly. "There's another men's room
down the hall."

  "But.."

Furious, Maddie snarled at him. "I said, Get out!"

The Bajoran ran away like a scared rabbit from the
crazy woman who had taken over the Men's room and
Maddie turned back to Harper without missing a beat.

The look of fear on his face made her stomach
flutter almost painfully. She was scared and angry
that something was being kept from her.

"My medical people are mad at me and you're scared
of me and I have to know why. I have to know
what's going on..."

What little color Harper had regained promptly drained
from his face and he groaned....

"Sir..." Aerdan spoke gently. "I really think
it'll be ok to tell her..."

Harper laughed weakly. "Do we really have to do
this in the middle of a mens room?"

"She has a right to know..." Aerdan chided him.

Harper rolled his eyes and groaned...."Dammit..."

Infuriated...Maddie raised her voice and yelled
at them both.

"WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON !?!?!"

Embarrased and wringing his hands...the normally
confident and charming Admiral finally blurted it
out in little more than a whisper.

"I'm pregnant."
