"Are you sure you have the time? You seemed to be in a rush a few minutes ago." Tam was only partly joking; he had been making good time on the way into the turbolift, after all. Not only that, but she didn't really enjoy the idea of airing her life story to someone that she had known for less than half an hour.

Clarkson glanced at the chronometer. "Well, I have some time, anyway. Long enough for an abbreviated version." He crossed his arms and waited.

**I never realized how much I appreciated living with a Vulcan.** After all, they didn't ask such open-ended questions, and if you stalled they (sometimes)(usually) stopped asking. "How I got into Starfleet..." she mused aloud. "I place the blame for that on my aunt." She smiled, a little too tightly to be genuine but still enough to indicate that that statement was a joke. "She was a nurse on Bajor, and after I passed out of school there she took me on as her assistant. I had had some classes already on basic medical care," standard first aid, she had been tracked in medical-oriented courses, "so I could help her with cases. On some of her missions, she took me with her through the Temple of the Prophets--"

"The what?"

"The Bajoran wormhole. I'm sorry, that's how I'm accustomed to referring to it." She cringed internally at the faux pas; apparently she hadn't gotten as much rest with that nap as she had thought. "I enjoyed the exploration and the space flight, so I applied to the academy."

"And you decided to go into counseling." He looked satisfied with his conclusion. Tam almost hated to disappoint him.

"Actually, I went into nursing." The look on his face was entertaining. "After a few years as a nurse, I went into retraining for a position as ship's counselor."

Clarkson looked thoughtful. "So it wasn't your first career choice. That's unusual, mostly people stay in the career tracks they initially pick."

"Not everybody. I switched, and I knew several graduates at the academy that were taking courses in a different field in order to get a different position." She was distracted by a soft chime from her computer, telling her that a message had just arrived for her. "I'm sorry, I just got something, and I've kept you here longer than I intended. If you'll excuse me..."

He nodded and stood. "I have to get going. It was good meeting you, though. And remember our deal!" He grinned at her and let himself out.

She nodded at his back and opened the message. It was a short note, from T'ial, but then again T'ial always wrte short notes, with an amazing economy of words. As she read it, a smile spread across her face-- her first real, genuine smile since getting aboard this ship.
