============= “Routine Should Never Be Used in the Same Sentence as Starfleet…EVER” Con’t from Naomi/Erik’s “The Hunt for Columbia” ============= Location: USS PATRIOT Stardate: 2422 [2.7] 0412.1612 Scene: Clarkson/Jade Quarters Daniel had read for a very long time, staying true to his promise to stay on the couch and laze around for as long as possible. With no training drills schedule anytime soon and a mission that was completely different from the kinds of missions that would normally require the use of the marines it looked like he was going to get a pleasant surprise of an effectively extended vacation. The PADD he was reading turned out to be reasonably boring and before long he found himself starting to drift off. Sometime after he’d fallen asleep he was awakened by the chirping of his comm. badge. He’d taken it off to drop it on the table while he’d been reading and now that he’d noticed the chirping he sleepily rolled over to tap the comm. badge and ask what was going on. [[You need to get yourself down here right away Doc,]] Daniel recognized the voice of Josh Morris. [[A situation’s come up.]] Daniel was immediately awake at hearing mention of a situation. “What happened?” he demanded. [[The shuttle’s disappeared off our sensors,]] was Morris’ careful answer. Daniel was silent for a moment, letting the thought roll over him. “I’ll be right there,” he said finally. =========== Location: 5 minutes later Scene: Marine Deck Briefing Room Daniel had literally sprinted as fast as he could from the quarters to the turbolift and then again from the lift all the way to the briefing room on marine deck. He entered the room quickly noting that only the team leaders and the command staff for the marines were present. Clearly, it was an impromptu meeting and it looked as though all of the other marines had been waiting for him to arrive. The whole ship knew that his wife had been on the shuttle that had disappeared and while Daniel sensed some of the other marines looking at him he tried to ignore their stares as he concentrated on what Maverick was saying. “There were indications of weapons fire within the nebula itself, but there is no sign of the COLUMBIA on sensors,” The MCO informed the secondary leaders of his marine unit. “Captain Jones has decreed that we are going to take the ship into the nebula following the STAR RIDER in order try and find out what happened to them and recover survivors if possible.” His gaze shifted to his executive officer. “I will be on the bridge throughout the search in order to act as executive officer for the ship in Commander Kenta’s absence. During that time Major, I want you to take charge down here. If weapons fire is indeed involved then we might have a boarding action on another vessel. I want you to make sure we have the troops available to do that if the time should come.” “Aye sir,” Daniel replied, inclining his head slightly. His mind had been wandering off slightly and he’d only just caught the second half of Mav’s directive. The MCO continued to brief the rest of the troops for a few more minutes and once his briefing was done everyone broke away in order to start working on their various tasks. The unit was very experienced in this respect and Daniel didn’t need to issue many orders to them once Mav had made his exit. A hand on his shoulder drew him out of his reverie and he looked up to see the concerned looking face of Morris. “Are you okay?” he asked. “I guess I have to be,” Daniel answered with a shrug and a sigh. “You can always go back to your quarters if you need to,” Morris suggested. “The team leaders are all experienced enough to handle this without your direct supervision.” Daniel smiled slightly. “Thanks for the offer, but I’m in charge here,” he said. “Grief is a luxury I can’t afford right now.” He slowly got up and Morris noticed that his manner had changed to someone that looks like they have a great deal of weight on their shoulders. “Come on,” Daniel said to Morris, slowly making his way out from behind the table they were seated at. “Let’s go check on the troops.” ============ NRPG: Just moving things along a little bit! ============ ========== V.
