“Premonitions”

Con’t from Erik/Naomi’s “A Tale of Two Runabouts”

========

Location: USS PATRIOT

Stardate: 2422 [2.7] 0417.2006

Scene: Marine Deck

Daniel was standing at one of the large windows and staring out into the
nebula moodily. He was irritated at the current situation and was even more
irritated because he knew that there was nothing he could really do about
it. For all he knew Catherine and Ben could already be dead. His mind
drifted back to the nightmare he just had back on EARTH and the irrational
part of his mind began to wonder if the nightmare was actually a
premonition.

Then, he shook his head. No, even if it was, the setting was totally
different. It was in a cave somewhere, not in a nebula in the middle of
nowhere. It didn’t make much sense that the nightmare would be a
premonition, because this situation was completely different. Besides, they
were all Starfleet officers; danger came with the territory.

“Excuse me sir,” Daniel’s thought processes were snapped by the voice of one
of the other marines. “I have the battle readiness report here for you.”

“Thank you Private,” Daniel said, taking the report and scanning it over
quickly. “This seems to be in order. So the teams are ready to move should
a boarding action be required?”

“Yes sir,” the Private nodded.

“Very well,” Daniel said, handing the report back to the Private. “The
troops should maintain battle readiness at all times just in case their
services are required. I don’t know for a fact that they will be used, but
we need to be ready to move if the situation arises. You understand?”

“Yes sir,” the Private nodded and saluted.

“Good,” Daniel said with a nod of his head. “Dismissed.” He watched the
Private scamper off before turning and looking out the window again. He
shook his head, wondering if things were ever going to be easy for him.

“How ya holding up doc?” Daniel looked over to spot Morris coming up beside
him.

Daniel shrugged. “I’m about the same as I was when I heard the news,” he
said. “Nothing much has changed.”

Morris came to a stop beside Daniel, looking out at the nebula himself.
“Yeah,” he agreed. “I guess nothing much has changed.”

“I gather they’ve both gotten out of worse scraps then this before,” Daniel
said suddenly. “So I don’t think this search is futile.”

Morris sensed that something more was coming from his immediate superior and
because of that said nothing, waiting for him to continue.

“I’m sure we’ll find them,” Daniel added, not sure whether he was trying to
convince Morris or himself. “And if we don’t…” his voice trailed off, and
he sighed as he looked out at the nebula.

“And if we don’t?” Morris prompted after a few minutes of silence had ticked
by.

Daniel shrugged, a hint of his tightly contained worry and grief coming out
in the action. “I don’t know,” he said. “But we will, so it doesn’t matter
anyway.”
