========== “De-Brief” Con’t from Naomi’s “In The Cold” ========== Location: USS PATRIOT Stardate: 2422 [2.7] 0430.2229 Scene: Marine CO Office Daniel walked into the office of his immediate superior and stood at attention. “You wanted to see me sir?” he asked. Maverick looked up from a PADD he’d been reading and nodded. “Yes Major,” he said. “At ease.” Daniel assumed a less rigid standing position, with his feet shoulder width apart and his hands behind his back. He said nothing, simply waiting for the Colonel to say what his purpose was in calling Daniel to his office. For his own part, once Daniel had assisted Catherine back to their quarters, he had sat down in the living room and started working on his report. Catherine was still in recovery and very fatigued, so he expected that she would be sleeping for awhile yet. “I am impressed that you were able to pull off this boarding without a single fatality,” Maverick commented. “But I believe my orders were to pursue and not engage the pirate vessel.” “Yes sir, they were,” Daniel answered, smartly nodding his head. “And that is exactly what we were doing until the pirates somehow found out we were following them and turned to confront us. They gave us an ultimatum of being boarded or a firefight and rather than engage in a fight where the winner was uncertain I felt a counter-boarding action had a higher chance of success.” Maverick was silent for a few moments while he considered Daniel’s words. Finally, he spoke again. “My main reason for calling you down here was not to have you explain your actions,” he said. “I’ve trained you well enough that I can trust that if you deviate from my instructions you’ll have a very damn good reason for doing so. No, I’ve called you here for a different reason entirely.” Daniel said nothing, but looked at the Colonel expectantly. “I believe you are familiar with the captain of the pirate vessel you captured?” Maverick asked. When Daniel nodded his head, the MCO continued. “He’s made the accusation that you treated him roughly in an interrogation. He claims that you grabbed him, forced him against a wall and even threw him to the floor.” Maverick had been reading from a PADD as he said those words and now he looked away from the device and up at his Executive Officer. “Is that true Major?” “Yes sir,” Daniel said, looking straight ahead. “It is absolutely true.” “Why did you do it?” “The man was being uncooperative towards other interrogatory techniques,” Daniel answered. “But more so to the point, he was being entirely nonchalant about what at the time I thought were the deaths of two Starfleet officers that he had caused. Since we had lost the element of secrecy in tailing the pirate vessel, the only way we were going to get the information we needed was to get him to give us the decryption codes for their computer files.” “I asked him if he had ever considered the lives he’d ruined with his actions,” Clarkson continued. “He shrugged and said no and then something snapped inside me. I’m not proud of my actions sir, but I did do them.” “I see,” Maverick said. “You know, you could just as easily have denied it. There were no witnesses, it would have been his word against yours and nobody would have believed a pirate.” “I know sir,” Clarkson answered. “But it would not have been proper to do so. I was then and am now prepared to accept any consequences to the actions I have taken.” Mav leaned back in his chair slightly, a very small smile on his face. “You should count yourself very lucky Major,” he said after a few moments of silence. Daniel was so surprised by this that he glanced at Maverick, confused. “How so sir?” he asked. “You are a Starfleet marine young man,” Maverick replied. “Not a police officer or similarly a member of Starfleet security. We’re not bound by the same stupid rules and regulations they are. As a marine you have a bit more latitude in extracting information from detainees.” “I just wanted to see if the story was true or not,” Maverick commented. “I don’t really care one way or another and if security hadn’t mentioned it to the Captain, I never would be brought it up.” “So…” Daniel said slowly. “I’m not in trouble?” “No Daniel,” Bret replied. “In fact, you did a great job. You held to the mission, at great emotional cost to yourself. Now, go home and tend to your wife.” Daniel sighed with relief and then even smiled. “Yes sir,” he said. “Thank you sir.” ========= NRPG: Many thanks to Taylor for helping me with this post! ========= ========== V.
