“Home”

Con’t from my own “Short Discussion”

=========

Location: USS PATRIOT

Stardate: 2422 [2.7] 0510.1717

Scene: Marine Deck

“You wanted to see me sir?” Maverick looked up from his PADD and nodded at
Brian Dirak, asking him to take a seat.

“Have you been de-briefed Mr. Dirak?” Maverick asked.

“Yes sir,” Dirak answered with a nod of his head. “We put together all of
the information and combined it with Major Clarkson’s report.”

Maverick nodded his approval, before leaning back in his chair and regarding
the other man intently. “Do you remember the order I gave you before the
COUNTERSTRIKE left dock?” he asked.

Dirak nodded again. “Yes sir, I do,” he said.

“Was there any time during the mission where you felt like it might become
necessary to carry out that order?” Maverick asked. He’d already read
Dirak’s report on that, but he sometimes liked to get things straight from
the horse’s mouth.

Dirak nodded a third time. “There were a couple of times sir,” he said.
Briefly, he outlined the few times that he thought he might be forced to
carry out the unpleasant task of relieving an officer. “But at the same
time, the Major handled himself beautifully. He didn’t betray much emotion
either in his voice or his expression; didn’t do anything to unsettle the
marines on the bridge. The one time that he couldn’t do that I think was
when the COUNTERSRIKE swept and missed the transport both times. But he
kept his head enough to get up and head to the back out of sight.”

Maverick nodded his head. “It couldn’t have been easy for him,” he
observed.

“I don’t think it was sir,” Dirak answered. “But at the same time, I think
this proves that even when loved ones are concerned, he can keep his head
and fulfill the mission.”

Maverick looked at Dirak and nodded his head. “I think so too,” he said.

“We’ve received permission to dock now,” Cal reported from the operations
station.

“Good,” Helice said with a smile. The mission had been a short one, but she
knew of at least a few people on her crew that could do with the time off.
“Helm, initiate docking procedures.”

“Acknowledged, docking procedures initiated.” There were a few moments of
silence as the helm officer skillfully set the ship into its docking
procedure. There were a few moments of silence as everyone waited and
finally the helm reported the successful docking.

“Excellent work,” Helice said. “Lieutenant Cal, inform the crew that their
shore leave has started.”

Scene: Marine Deck

Samuels was playing around with the controls on one of the marine rifles and
was startled out of his concentration by someone clearing their throat
behind him. Dropping the rifle on the table, he got up and looked at Morris
guiltily.

“Uh…this isn’t what it looks like,” he said.

Morris stared at him. “Are you sure?” he asked. “Do I need to remind you
about what happened the last time you started on one of your inventing
sprees?”

Samuels frowned. “I’m not trying to invent something!” he said. “I was
just repairing one of the rifles, that’s all.”

Morris sighed. “Alright,” he said. “Anyway, we’re on shore leave now, I
just stopped by to let you know.”

Samuels nodded. “Thanks,” he said, waiting for Morris to leave before he
turned around and picked up the rifle. “If I make the adjustment here…”

NRPG: And we’re back home! I just figured I’d actually write out the
PATRIOT’s arrival for the benefit of our newest crewmember.
