“Prepping Before R&R”

Con’t from Taylor’s “78”

Location: USS PATRIOT

Stardate: 2422 [2.7] 0511.0407

Scene: Marine Deck

Daniel entered the marine deck, a stack of PADDs in his hand. They were
overdue protocol PADDs that had been put aside during the search and rescue
mission he had just been on and he was intending to walk them over to the
Marine CO office and put them into the out tray. He noticed that the door
was closed, which meant that Mav had already left. It took a rather
impressive juggling act for him to get the door open and once he did he
walked over to the desk and placed the stack of PADDs into the out tray.

“I didn’t realize you were still here,” a voice said, causing Daniel to turn
and smile in the direction of the man that had been the Marine XO back when
he was the Marine CO on the USS DISCOVERY.

“Yep, still here,” Daniel said. “Just getting some last minute work in
before I officially head on my shore leave.”

“How’s Catherine?” Josh asked curiously.

“She’s a lot better now,” Daniel affirmed. “There was never really any
doubt though; with her physiology. Once she got back into a heated ship,
she was going to eventually be able to nurse herself back to health.”

“What about Commander Kenta?”

“He’s fine too,” Daniel answered. “I saw him in the turbolift a few hours
ago and he seemed to be fine. He also headed the team that took the pirate
ship away, so he must have been in reasonably good health to pull that off.”

“That’s true,” Morris said with a nod of his head. He coughed in an
uncomfortable manner. “Since you’re still here, there’s something I’d like
to bring to your attention.”

“Oh?” Daniel turned around, regarding the other man curiously and raising an
eyebrow. “What’s that?”

As succinctly as possible, Morris detailed the meeting with Samuels. “I
don’t think he was specifically trying to create one of his ‘inventions’
right then,” Morris commented. “But at the same time, I think he’s getting
a bit antsy and might try one in the near future.”

“Well, he has shown remarkable restraint since we got here,” Daniel
commented. “Although direct orders will do that to a marine. And he would
be countermanding a direct order if he came up with one of his inventions.”

“I think that’s why he’s held off for this long,” Morris said. “But you
know Samuels; it might be a case of him not being able to help himself.”

Daniel nodded his understanding. “Is he still here?” he asked.

“No, I just checked. He’s already on his shore leave.”

Daniel thought for a moment, before nodding his head again. “Okay,” he said
decisively. “I’ll talk to him after shore leave; try to see what his
thought processes are.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Morris agreed. “Who knows, maybe his next invention
will work.”

Daniel stared at him. “That might be setting the bar a bit too high for
Samuels,” he said.

“Well, what would you suggest?”

Daniel considered the question. “The hole he blows in the ceiling will
merely be large instead of gaping?” he asked.

Morris chuckled. “Yeah, yours is more realistic,” he said.
