"Final Farewells"

Con't from Bethany's "Party Time"

Location: USS PATRIOT

Stardate: 2422 [2.7] 0529.0553

Scene: Clarkson/Jade Quarters

Catherine slipped another tunic into her bag and tried to run through the
list of items that she would need to take for the assignment. She had to
ensure that all of her clothing and equipment was civilian, which was
trickier then it sounded. At least this time though, she wasn't in a hurry
and doing it in secrecy. Daniel knew. He didn't like it, but at least he
knew.

"How's it going?" Daniel asked, leaning in the doorway to their bedroom and
looking at the packing scene that was unfolding on the bed. He'd just
returned from his shift for the day and since it had been uneventful, he
didn't have to stick around on marine deck any longer like he did on days
where the marines were busy.

"I think I'm about done." She mused softly, her forehead furrowing as she
gave her bag one last critical look before shutting it up. She wiped her
hands on her thighs as she approached her husband. "Going to miss me?" She
asked him with a faint smile.

"Naturally," Daniel replied, lightly wrapping his arms around her and softly
kissing her forehead. "Probably more so than I realize right now."

"Two months is a long time." She smiled slightly and hugged him. "I'll
certainly miss you."

She turned around and stepped back to the bed, and scooped up her bag. "At
least we have tonight." The woman smiled as she tossed the bag against the
door frame, to keep it out of the way.

"Just think about the peace and quiet while I'm done. You're a bachelor all
over again." She teased him with a smirk.

Daniel laughed at that comment. He was worried, she knew he was worried and
she was doing her best to reassure him, so he tried *his* best to go along
with it. "Yep, now I can walk around the quarters in my underwear and not
shower for two months straight."

She wrinkled up her nose in disgust, she figured he was joking around, but
that went beyond good taste. "You didn't do that before, and you're not
going to start now!" She patted him on the back. "I do expect that you can
at least keep this place clean. Hmm?"

Daniel smiled innocently. "I'll do my best," he said. Then, to change the
subject, "Have you had your dinner yet?"

"Hey, you can have your poker nights!" She suddenly realised with a big
grin. It might be good for him to re-integrate with the marines and with
her out of the picture, he could do that easily. "And no, I haven't eaten
but I'm not hungry. If you are, go and help yourself."

Daniel smiled at her before disentangling himself and walking out into their
living area. He wasn't really feeling that hungry himself, so he just
replicated himself a sandwich and sat down at their table with his meal for
the night.

"So, how are you getting to your assignment?" he asked in between bites as
Catherine sat down at the table with him.

"I'm getting a lift. Riley is supposed to come at about 0600 in the morning
and pick me up. From there, I have no idea where we're supposed to go."
She gave him a bemused shrug. She knew little else, Riley would fill her in
on the details en route. "That's all I really know."

"That's not a lot," Daniel observed with a frown, before sighing and shaking
his head. "I guess that's how they want it."

"I'll be fine. Apparently it's just remote observation of a target. That's
all. The Commodore made me promise that I wouldn't even leave my room."
Catherine smiled. "So if anything, I'll die of boredom!"

Daniel returned the smile. "I know," he said, before taking his empty plate
and recycling it in the replicator before sitting back down at the table.
"Still, I can't help but worry." He reached across the table and gently
squeezed one of her hands. "Husbands do, you know."

"So do I. So while I'm gone, you had better be careful." Catherine warned
him. This accursed ship could always find trouble. It was a talent. And
there was a chance that he might be a little more reckless. The woman's
mouth twisted into a smile. At least together they tended to balance each
other out.
