"Bad News"

Con't from Taylor's "83"

Location: USS PATRIOT

Stardate: 2422 [2.7] 0720.0326

Scene: Marine Deck

With the absence of a number of the higher marine officers due to either
being with a relative or injury, the task of doing the rough draft of the
final write up of the mission from the marine point of view had been left to
Josh Morris. He worked on the PADD, jotting down a number of different
notes, as he went from situation to situation. Working on correspondence
was nothing new to the 2nd Lieutenant; in fact he had been responsible for a
lot of paperwork and administration when he had acted as Daniel Clarkson's
Executive Officer during their dual stint on the USS DISCOVERY.

The deck was relatively empty at the moment; a lot of marines currently
trying to find out what had become of their friends and relatives as the
re-population of EARTH slowly commenced. With the empty deck and relatively
little distractions, Morris was able to work quickly and efficiently on the
report without being slowed down by any frequent interruptions.

"Hey boss," Morris looked up and noticed DJ Samuels standing in the doorway
to the duty office. "I've got some news I think you should know about."

"What's that?" Morris asked.

"We found Clarkson's mom," Samuels answered.

Time Index: an hour later

Location: EARTH (St. Paul, Minnesota, United States of America)

Scene: Williamson Residence

"Do you want me to get that mom?" Marty asked, poking his head from outside
of the room as they heard the door chime ring.

[[Please,]] Nancy's voice came from the kitchen. [[I'm tied up here.]]

"Sure thing," Marty walked over to the door and opened it. He stared at the
two men dressed in marine green expectantly. "Can I help you gentlemen?"

Samuels looked like he didn't know what to say and even Morris wore a
confused look on his face. "Sorry," he said. "I think we have the wrong
house. I was trying to locate a Miss Nancy Williamson."

"That's my mom," Marty said, stepping back and gesturing for the two to come
in. "Just walk through those doors over there and have a seat; I'll go get
her."

The two marines walked into the living room of the Williamson residence and
took a seat on one of the sofas. "So why is her last name not Clarkson?"
Samuels asked.

"From what I gather," Morris answered. "She decided to go back to her
maiden name after the official divorce with Daniel's father. The two boys
were already well known as Clarkson however, so they decided it was best to
keep their surname intact."

"And the kid?"

"Probably Daniel's younger brother," Josh said. He was about to continue,
but the arrival of Daniel's mother on the scene interrupted those plans.
Both marines rose to their feet and nodded respectfully to the woman that
had raised one of their bosses.

"Ma'am," Josh Morris said. "My name is Joshua Morris; this is DJ Samuels.
We're both members of Tango Company."

"The same unit that Daniel serves in," Nancy said with a smile. "Please,
have a seat." She herself sat down before continuing. "I imagine with this
whole situation that the PATRIOT must be quite busy."

"We are ma'am," Morris replied, trying to figure out how to broach the
subject. He noticed Marty walk into the room and perch himself on the arm
of the chair that Nancy was sitting in.

"So, where's that delinquent brother of mine?" Marty asked. "Too busy
literally saving the world to drop in and say hi?"

"Well." Morris coughed uncomfortably. "That's actually what we're here
about."

Whether it was the tone on his voice or the expression on his face, the
seriousness of the situation dawned on both Nancy and Marty at the same
time. The smile was literally wiped off Nancy's face, whereas Marty's
expression grew very solemn.

"What happened?" Nancy asked quietly. She'd been through too much in her
life to get easily hysterical, but her outward calm was barely containing an
inward worry that threatened to burst out and overwhelm her. "Is Daniel
alive?"

Morris exchanged looks with Samuels briefly, before looking over at Nancy.
"The PATRIOT took a lot of refugees on board during the crisis," he started
his explanation. "Some of them turned out to be essentialists. The
essentialists were starting to stir up the crowd and Daniel decided to
confront them on it."

"An essentialist beat Daniel in a fight?" Marty asked, unbelievingly.

Morris shook his head. "Your brother walked up to them and instructed them
to follow him to the brig. When he turned around and started back in the
direction he'd come from, one of the essentialists pulled out a knife and
stabbed him in the back."

Nancy's breath caught in her throat. "Is Daniel alive?" she asked again,
her voice barely a whisper.

Morris nodded. "For the moment," he said. "The blade hit him at the top of
his spine. Right now he's unconscious and on life support."

Nancy's expression said it all at receiving that news. "Can I.can I see
him?" she asked hesitantly.

"That's why we're here," Morris said. "We need to bring you back to the
ship to talk with one of our doctors."

Nancy nodded. "I'll come with you right away," she said.

NRPG: Just moving things forward in my own little sub-plot here. This post
was initially going to include a scene in sickbay as well, but I decided to
keep that to write later.

Leigh -> Nice to see you *waves*. I'll get to a post involving Cochrane as
soon as I get the chance.
