"I was expecting something more impressive." (cont. "markers") * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Location: RESTIN II Stardate: 2.70917.2138 Scene: Caves "Wait here and we'll see if it's safe" Tanith said in a sarcastic falsetto imitation of the Captain "So boys, how does it feel to be treated like one of the girls?" "I hardly think that's how it was meant." Kel said, raising an eyebrow at the rather acerbic FCO. He'd read her files, and rather felt that he ought to have some sort of affinity for her, given that they shared the less savory background of the streets, but he was finding her a bit difficult, she seemed to lack the discipline he expected of fellow officers. "Listen, sweet cheeks, it's all very well and good for you to say. You're the babysitter, but seriously, what makes them think that it'd be any safer here than with them? I can think of about a thousand things that can go wrong in a cave, and that's not even counting all the nice cave nasties I read about in the file." Tanith leaned up against the wall and propped one foot rakishly against a rock. "I'm not *sweet cheeks*" Kel retorted. "And anyhow, what if the device, I don't know, has some sort of security system? Two is a lot less target than five." "Woah, calm it Lt. I didn't mean nothin' by it." Tanith raised her hands placatingly. "I just hate waiting is all. I'm not a patient person." She raked her hand through her unruly hair and ran a finger along the bridge of her nose ruminatively as the silence stretched out. "Hey, I gotta question." She said suddenly. "Uh. So. Who exactly are the Iconians?" The silence stretched out for a bit as the two officers stared at her. She scratched her ear embarrassedly and chewed her lip. "They're a highly-advanced society that reached its peak just before dying out about 200,000 years ago. They were based on a home world now near the Romulan side of the Neutral Zone. They were extremely imperialistic, they used of a highly advanced galactic-wide transporter allowed their empire to flourish; at least one outpost was in the Gamma Quadrant." Cochrane said quickly. "That's all we really know about them." "Wait, so we're chasing after 200,000 year old legends? Ye gods, we might as well go looking for Atlantis." Tanith frowned. "No, Captain Picard actually found one of them on Iconia." The older man said patiently. "Oh." Tanith's sallow face flushed, and she added rather lamely, "you learn something new every day." A sudden echoing of footsteps sounded, and the three officers straightened and flexed into various poses of readiness. They relaxed as Daniel's form appeared around the corner. "We've got an object here to analyze, everything looks safe." He informed them. "Follow me." * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Scene: Iconian marker cavern. "It's not very impressive." Tanith stared at the marker. "I expected something a wee bit more impressive. It looks kinda like a holographic lava lamp." "The readings are far more impressive." Stephens reassured her as he looked at his tricorder. "I think this is an energy generator of some sort, but it seems to be operating on half power. I'm not sure how it transfers energy to other devices, but if we found a way to charge it up, we might see some interesting results." "I'm fairly sure that would be a bad idea." Tanith countered. "When has activating an unknown device EVER been a good idea? At least, that's what watching Holomovies has taught me." "True, but how else are we going to complete our mission? It might do something important." Kel put in his two cents. The three junior officers mulled that over before looking at the CO for guidance. Alix Fowler <selyara_at_hotmail.com> Lt.
