"Loaded Cylinder"
continued from
"I was expecting something more impressive."

Location: RESTIIN II
Stardate: 2.70924.1942
Scene: Iconian marker cavern.

(NRPG: Alix's)

"It's not very impressive." Tanith stared at the marker. "I expected
something a wee bit more impressive. It looks kinda like a
holographic lava lamp."

"The readings are far more impressive." Stephens reassured her as he
looked at his tricorder. "I think this is an energy generator of some
sort, but it seems to be operating on half power. I'm not sure how it
transfers energy to other devices, but if we found a way to charge it
up, we might see some interesting results."

"I'm fairly sure that would be a bad idea." Tanith countered. "When
has activating an unknown device EVER been a good idea? At least,
that's what watching Holomovies has taught me."

"True, but how else are we going to complete our mission? It might do
something important." Kel put in his two cents. The three junior
officers mulled that over before looking at the CO for guidance.

Before Ben could respond the machine seemed to come to life. The
colors intensified and swirled faster, and it began to emit low hum.

"What's happening?" he asked, a feeling of foreboding taking over.

"I'm not sure" Stephens answered, tapping at his tricorder, "Give me a moment."

[[Maverick to Kenta.]] the colonel's voice sprang out of Ben's combadge.

He tapped the device hidden under his shirt and replied tensely. This
is a bad time, Colonel, We'll call you back."

As he finished the transmission he saw a beam burst forth from the
increasingly active cylinder at Stephens, and another straight at his
chest. In the moment before it hit he braced himself, he expected to
feel the lancing pain of a phaser blast, or the overwhelming heat of
a disrupter. He expected to be knocked from his feet, and feel the
hard blow of the ground before losing consciousness. That's if he was
luckily enough not to be vaporized.

Instead he felt only a slight tingle that caused his hair to stand on
end. Looking down he realized the beam was directed at his combadge,
not at him, and that Stephens beam had hit the tricorder.

"It's draining the power," The ensign said without dropping the
device, a move Ben was not sure he could have replicated. Similar
beams were now jumping out from the machine at the rest of the party,
all targeting their equipment. Then, as suddenly as it began the
machine shut down completely. Even the swirling colors that had been
there when they first arrived vanished into a metallic grey veneer.

Stephens was the first to speak. "My tricorder is completely dead."

"Mine too." Tanith added after quickly checking.

Ben tapped his combadge, "Kenta to Maverick." He didn't even hear the
characteristic chirp of a dead line.

"It didn't target the phasers." Kel observed pulling his out.

"We didn't use them." Daniel pointed out, looking as if part of him
regretted it.

"I thought I detected a scan just before my tricorder shut down. It
may have registered the details of my tricorder and the commander's
combadge, and then searched the room for similar equipment.

"Well without combadges we have no way of getting off this planet,"
Ben pointed out, "Unless we find an active gateway, and right now
this machine is our only lead, so pick a console, and let's see what
we can figure out."

"But this technology is totally foreign." Tanith blurted. "Without
our tricorders how are we supposed to get anything out those computers."

"If we don't," Daniel replied grimly. "We're going to be here for a long time."

NRPG: I picked up from that post KT did awhile ago which means time
wise, Ben's group is behind Mav's.

Sorry I haven't been around. I'm still not done with all the trouble
from that leak, but we've got a handle on it now, so I should be
around more regularly. If anyone is stuck for ideas, I've got a few.
