"Commander!" Stephens shouted excitedly, "I think we've got something."

The new CO was by his side with a quickness that surprised the
ensign. "Report." His voice held just enough impatient excitement to
betray his apprehension at their current situation.

"We haven't made any progress on the consoles, but I've been
examining the structure, and considering it's design, and the way it
drained our technology of power, my best guess is that despite all
the fancy gadgets around here, it's basically a battery or generator
of some sort."

"Alright." Ben responded, not understanding his point, but trusting
the ensign wasn't finished.

"Well if that assumption is correct," Stephens continued. "Than these
cables here," he pointed to one of three identical cables about five
inches in diameter than ran up the side of the cylinder and vanished
into the ceiling. "probably connect with whatever device it's
supposed to power."

"Which could be the gateway." Ben finished for him.

"Whatever it is it requires a lot of power, an Iconian gateway would
certainly fit the profile." Stephans agreed.

"And the gateway can take us back to the ship." Tanith interjected.

"We'd have to use phasers to cut a hole large enough for us to fit."
Kel pointed out. "And without any equipment it will be dangerous.
We'll be climbing straight up."

"We'll have to manage." Ben answered.

"I think we're forgetting something." The marine joined the
conversation for the first time. "Discharging a phaser might activate
the device again."

The room was quiet for a moment before Ben spoke. "It's a risk we
have to take." he looked up at the point where the cable reached the
ceiling. "I'll do the test, Captain, take the other phasers and get a
wall between you and the cylinder. If this doesn't work we can still
save some of our equipment."

Once Daniel was in position, Ben aimed and fired his phaser,
producing a roughly man-sized hole in the rock next to the cable. The
cylinder was silent.

Ben surveyed his handiwork a moment before issuing orders. "I'll go
up first." He stated, knowing the job of extending the hole and
cutting handholds would be the most demanding. "Wait for my signal to
follow, if we're lucky it will level off after a little while. If
not, I'll cut a ledge we can rest on. That way the rest of you can
climb straight up, without having to hang and wait."

He stood on a console and, using the phaser to make a few solid hand
holds in the rock. "Corwin you'll follow on my signal, then Stephens,
Clarkson, and McKlellan. Leave at least 20 feet between you in case
someone slips. I'll leave the way narrow to give you the best chance
of catching yourself, but there won't be a rope to help, so be careful."

His orders finished, Ben pulled himself up into the hole, and left
the others to wait.

NRPG: Does the cable really lead to the gateway? Can the team make
the climb, or will it prove too exhausting?

Glad to see the burst in posting. Let's start working towards a
conclusion. Those of you who haven't gotten in the mission yet, now's
the time. :)
