"Cooling Their Heels"
 (Cont. from "92")
----------------------------
Location: RESTIN II
Stardate: 2.71112.1056
Scene: Caverns

Ginny, Tam, and Darum were under orders to go into the caves last. Tam waited and watched until Maverick had disappeared, and then she stood to go. She was barely on her feet, though, when Ginny streaked silently by her, obviously intending to go in first. Not like she was going to argue, really, she was better at talking to people than shooting at them. Tam glanced back at Darum, standing as far away from the mouth of the cave as he could without putting himself so far that it could be interpreted as trying to run. **We should have sent him back up to the COUNTERSTRIKE. He probably won't be any use in a battle situation.** She turned her back on him and checked for Ginny.

There was no sign of her. Tam checked her phaser and started forward, then stopped and checked Darum again. He was standing closer, but was shaking now, and his phaser was trembling in his hands. "Maybe," she suggested, "you shouldn't handle your phaser until you need it. You wouldn'd want to fire too early and waste the charge."

He nodded and put in back into its holster. She was relieved, and turned to head into the tunnel.
-----------------------------
Scene: Five minutes later

Tam edged along the tunnel. She could hear voices up ahead, but she wasn't sure who it was. They didn't sound angry; was first contact going that well, or were her teammates planning to attack the newcomers? Behind her, she could hear the occasional swear from Darum as he stumbled over something. She would tell him to be quieter, except she didn't want to say anything until she figured out who it was speaking ahead of her. So she waited.

As she listened, she began to make out Catherine's voice, as well as Maverick's. Ginny seemed to be keeping quiet. But she still couldn't make out the words, so she started to move forward again. After another fifteen meters, she could hear the murmurs resolving themselves into words.

"... still think we should fire on them." Definitely Maverick.

"They haven't shown any signs of hostility, and some of the holograms are starting to disappear." Catherine. "I think we should wait."

Ginny, now. "I'm not sure about the integrity of the cave system, or how the tech'll react to phaser fire. I think we should wait longer."

"They're talking, after all, and not attacking. And if they are hostile, and are just using negotiations as a distraction, we can see them from a better angle." Catherine again.

Satisfied as to the situation, Tam began to move forward again. Then she stopped. She hadn't heard Darum swear, stumble, or even just move the entire time that she'd been standing there, and that hadn't occurred for such an unbroken block of time since he had entered the cave. There was a chance that he could have just stopped or sat down, though, and she decided to keep moving forward. He had a combadge and a phaser, and the acoustics of this section were such that she could probably hear any real scuffle.

She had only taken a few steps when she heard phaser fire erupt back toward the entrance of the cave.
