USS PATRIOT/GS-2: Various ("Change of Command")

"Change of Command"
continued from
"Daisy's found - and Bel - and William Wallace"

Location: USS PATRIOT
Stardate: 2.71215.1736
Scene: MOC
Time Index: Following from Shawn's post, and before Ken's.

"Alright," Ben began. After listening to their stories Ben had
determined Kane, at least, still had a lot to answer for, but Kane
wasn't here and Ben was more concerned with securing the station than
finding a scapegoat. "The first order of business is to establish
that GATEWAY STATION is once again under the control of the
Federation, and therefore Starfleet. Any objections?" There were
none. The officers in this room had made it clear to Ben that they
were not rebels. They had done what they were convinced was the only
thing they could do, and they seemed almost happy to have been wrong.

"Very well," The captain continued. "All former Starfleet officers on
the station are temporarily restored to their former ranks and
positions, pending the opportunity for a military trial." It wasn't a
statement about their professed innocence as it was about
practicality. He needed more men than he had, and he couldn't run
GATEWAY without it's crew. "Commander McInnis, that puts you in
command, but for the time being Colonel Maverick will remain in Ops
as my representative." Mav wouldn't normally be Ben's choice to be
there. He was sure the distrustful marine was exacerbating the
tension between the gateway staff and his own men rather than easing
it. But the man was there, and he was going to stay for the time being.

"Yes, Sir." Gene replied bowing his head slightly.

"You already have all the medical staff I can spare, but with the
exception of the INDEPENDANCE..." A tragedy that had Ben very
disturbed. The saboteur had to be a changeling, and it was almost
certainly still out there. "All my ships are operating at acceptable
levels, so we'll be sending any engineers we can spare to help speed
your repairs."

"Crichton you can coordinate them." Gene said looking at the Ensign
who had now taken on the duties of chief engineer.

"Getting the station repaired and free of dominion troops in the
first priority." Ben finished. As of Mav's last report his teams had
gone a few hours without any contact with the enemy, but they knew
there was at least one changeling, and with the Jem'Hadar camouflage
it was hard to be sure. "You're dismissed."

Location: GS-2
Scene: Science Lab Triage
Time index: Present

Ben stepped into the lab flanked by two members of station security.
They were there at Mav's insistence. As far as he was concerned the
station was not yet secure, and the Captain wasn't supposed to enter
hostile ground. He'd originally tried to convince Ben not to come at
all. The escort was their compromise.

The triage area was being slowly converted back to it's original
function. Science officers were calibrating their equipment, and
collecting the leftover medical supplies for transport back to
sickbay. With the help of the MERCY the medical situation was finally
contained. Critical patients had been transported to the medical
ship, and those patients whose injuries were less serious were now of
a small enough number to be serviced out of GATEWAY's sickbay. Most
of the doctor's had moved there or returned to their ships, but a few
were still here, working on the last few patients who's injuries made
them easier to treat than transport. It was one of these that Ben was
looking for, and it took him only a moment to pick her out of the crowd.

"Commander Davidson." His voice caused the tall women to turn away
from her work for a moment, smiling, but she quickly turned back to
her patient.

"One moment, Captain." She said respectfully. "Let me finish here."

Ben waited; his news wasn't urgent. He watched her work on the
patient's leg. He wasn't a doctor, but his medical training was
enough to see what was going on. He could tell the patient had broken
his leg, probably in two places, though Daisy had repaired the damage
to the bone before he'd arrived. She was now repairing the tissue
that surrounded the bone. It would take only a few minutes.

"There you go." The doctor addressed the patient, setting down her
instrument. "Your leg might be tender for a few hours, but you'll be
able to walk on it without any problem."

"Thank you, Doctor." The patient said standing tentatively, and then
turning to leave.

Daisy turned back to Ben. "What can I do for you?"

"I heard about the incident with the Nausicans." His tone was even,
his voice calm, but his eyes betrayed concern. "You weren't hurt?"

"I'm fine." She replied softly.

"I need to talk with you privately, do you have a few minutes?"

"Of course." She led him to an empty office, and Ben motioned for his
guards to remain outside. When the door closed behind them she pulled
him into a quick hug. "How are things going?"

"Not great." Ben replied with a sigh. "Did you hear about Commander McInnis?"

She nodded solemnly. "They brought him through here to be declared,
but it was a formality. If there had been anything that could have
been done they'd have sent him straight to the MERCY."

"I'm sorry I brought you here, Daisy." Ben changed the subject. "You
should be with your family now."

"There was no way you could've known about Mikey." She reassured him.
"You made the right choice."

"I know." Ben was quiet for a moment, and then began again. "With
Commander McInnis gone. I need a new CO for GATEWAY. There's no one
left in the Senior staff who's qualified, so they'll have to come
from the fleet, but I don't want to break up the command crews at a
time like this."

"Who are you going to pick?" Daisy asked, recognizing that he was
making a tough decision, and ready to support him.

"You."

It took a moment for the word to sink in, but when it did Daisy
immediately began to protest. "No, Ben, not me. I'm not fit for
command, I didn't even like being an EXO. There must be someone more
qualified."

"You're exactly what I need." Ben answered calmly. "The fleet doesn't
trust the crew from GATEWAY, and they know it. I need someone who'll
make that better, not worse. And I also need someone who won't
intimidate the civilian on the station." Ben smiled trying to add
some humor. "You're the least intimidating person I know."

"I can be intimidating." She replied with mock offence

"No you can't."

"I can! Just because you've never seen me."

"Are you going to threaten to burn their cookies?"

"That would just be mean." She replied, a smile on her face.
"Alright, I'll do my best."

"I know you will." Ben gave her quick kiss. "I'll let Lt. Kor know to
expect you in ops. If you feel overwhelmed, call me. I've got to get
back to work." They exchanged another quick hug and kiss before Ben
turned, leaving Daisy to think about her new position.

NRPG: Daisy's officially in charge of the station now. Keep up the
good work everybody. It's great to see so many posts.
