“Catching Up”

Con’t from Naomi’s <PATRIOT> “Ups and Downs”

======

Location: GS-2

Stardate: 2424 [2.8] 0120.0746

Scene: Sickbay

<Time index: before Naomi’s post>

Jeff was seated at the desk in his office, going over the reports for the
end of the day activities. Things had thankfully calmed down in sickbay to
the point where he was able to give many of the crew and officers a few
hours to go to their respective residential bunking areas and catch a few
winks of sleep. At the moment, there was a skeleton crew at work in sickbay
maintaining their current status, while Jeff was in his office making sure
all of the requisite paperwork was filed.

“Admin jobs suck, don’t they?” a voice asked, causing Jeff to look up and
smile as Daniel plopped himself into the chair opposite the CMO’s.

“You might say that,” Jeff replied, eyeing his long time friend and one time
partner in crime at the academy critically. After a few moments, he shook
his head and sighed softly. “Too bad we didn’t meet under different
circumstances Daniel. It would have given us the chance to catch up.”

“I know,” Daniel replied. “I’ve been working in your sickbay for the last
few days straight and we’ve barely had one chat since I got here.”

Jeff shook his head. “That’s war, I guess,” he said.

“Well,” Daniel said. “I’m beginning to think this station’s bad luck. I’ve
been here twice my whole life and both times it’s been to fight a large
scale battle.”

Jeff laughed. “Some people have all the luck,” he joked. Then his eyes
clouded. “I saw the casualty report about your unit…”

Now it was Daniel’s turn to shake his head. “I can’t quite get my head
around that one,” he said. There were a few moments of silence, before he
continued. “Colonel Maverick usually makes it a point to visit the funeral
of each marine that dies under his command. Somehow, I get the feeling this
time it’ll be more difficult.”

“Even though medical staff are on the front lines regularly and I’ve seen my
fair share of assaults as a field medic,” Jeff said. “The fact that most of
us do most of our work outside and away from the lines I think shields us a
lot of times from those types of heavy casualties.”

“If you’re not prepared for it,” Daniel replied. “Even one person dying
under you can drive you crazy.”

“I know,” Jeff answered with a sigh. “Believe me, I know.”

Suddenly, Daniel started to yawn, covering his mouth in an effort to
suppress it. “I’m totally beat Jeff,” he said, standing up. “Is there
anything else you need help with right now?”

Jeff shook his head. “Go get some rest,” he said. “I sent most of the
other staff away as well.”

Daniel nodded. “I’ll see you in the morning,” he said. “And at some point,
we need to catch up.”

“Yeah,” Jeff agreed. “And you still need to introduce me to your wife.”

“And you still need to introduce me to yours,” Daniel shot back. “And your
kids.”

Jeff laughed, shaking his head and turning back to the PADD he’s been
reading. “I know when I’m beat Major,” he said. “Now go get some rest.”

========

NRPG: Well, that was one ultimately character-centred, selfish post.

Sorry about that, but with the past couple of weeks I’ve had, basically
anything I can get out at this rate I’ll settle for. I’m hopefully going to
be posting again very soon, at which point I will address some of the other
things for my two characters.

Joy -> I’ll be getting to what we talked about in my next post, because
right now I don’t think I could do it justice.

Erik -> NRPG heading your way in a few minutes.
